For many years the bridesmaid, finally 2006 would prove to be his year for a thoroughly deserved tournament win. The fact he had to beat cha0ticz, winz and Cooller to claim top prize at the Transatlantic Showdown made it even sweeter.
His other 5 tournaments have been a mixed bag, but he is never outside the top 6. A highly competitive field at Intel Summer saw him claim 5th place, whilst he matched that result at ESWC. His result in France however could be viewed as a disappointment although as ever his practice schedule wasn’t the best before he attended.
He had a pretty horrible Vsports All Stars event, never getting to grips with the setup and equipment being used. Here in may lay one of the reasons he doesn’t win as many tournaments as his talent deserves. When everything is right and he’s had the kind of practice he got in Sweden before TAS, Jason is simply brilliant. Untouchable even by Cooller, but not every tournament is like that, not every tournament is “perfect” or has the right feel and where other players, particularly Toxic, adapt, Socrates seems to wither.
He missed Quakecon and may feel a break was worthwhile and come back stronger than before, but that remains to be seen. His inactivity lately hasn’t cost him his 3rd place in the Q4 World Rankings, however his name does appear to be dropping off other peoples radar when it comes to mentioning the top Q4 players.
He is still the most consistent of the Americans, who have had a torrid time in Q4 this year and remains the only American to win a major tournament in Quake 4. Not even Fatal1ty can claim that one.
Does he deserve your vote to attend WCG?
