If you don’t know who Blue is by now, you must have been living on Mars for the last 6 years. Who else has a bug named after him in a game and who else is credited with the first ever triple air rocket kill on DM6 in a movie?
After “retiring” from gaming many years ago, Blue is making a return at the ripe old age of 22. It is hard to believe that as long ago as 2000 he was playing and beating Fatal1ty in CPL events and yet here he is, fresh and motivated to play Quake 4.
After practicing with fooki and Socrates in preparation for his comeback, he entered the CB EuroCup XII, only to pull out days later. Whether it was because he wasn’t ready or didn’t want to play online matches in far flung countries, we will never know, but his return was finally confirmed at WSVG Dreamhack after linking up with UK based All The Rage.
A 7th place finish, just behind his team mate Garpy looked a decent enough return, but he followed that up with 13th-16th at Intel Summer and that wasn’t quiet what he had in mind I don’t think.
According to his manager at atr, there is no one with more dedication and single mindedness to succeed, but he is yet to really show us the old Blue in a tournament. His 2nd place at Kode 5 Sweden was good, but considering the players attending, not that unexpected and perhaps his best showing this year was at Quakecon. His Grand Final appearance (with 2GD) in the 2v2 was a highlight and his 7th place in the 1v1 was decent too.
It is pretty obvious that he is still very popular to quake fans and despite his lack of major success on his return to the scene, he does have all the credentials to go on and start winning tournaments again.
Could that start at WCG? Unlikely, but he is sure to give the current crop of top players a seriously hard run for their money, if he is selected to attend.
