Singapore = clammy, but exciting life experience I am sure, fuck the middle east, good earning potential, but crazy temps and is it worth the risk. Why go to Ireland, some nice scenery, but doubt the job and money situation is great, switzerland seems to be decent, but again, bit foreign.

I think you could also consider places in SoCal for tech jobs, like Los Angeles. I'm not too sure though but my guess is that the Bay Area is your best bet.

The Bay Area is nice, but rent prices are some of the highest in the country, especially Silicon Valley (e.g. Mountain View, Cupertino, Palo Alto, etc.). It costs like $2-3k per month for a small bedroom apartment (~600 sq. feet) that are near the tech companies. $1,200+ for shared living in a house that's probably a million dollar home, and your roommates will probably be lawyers or other IT workers. If you move there, you might end up having roommates, since housing over there is in demand. If you don't mind commuting, you could get a place with more square feet with better amenities in a city like San Jose for the same amount of money.

If you want to learn more specific information about North American cities, I'd recommend http://www.city-data.com as a useful website, and especially its web forum. You can learn useful things about cities, like how is the night life or the quality of schools.

Yes, San Francisco and San Jose are cheaper for rent. I remember the last time I was in SF that the starting price was $900 -1000 for a studio apartment. $1500 for a single bed. I think though if you make 50-70k and you live alone, you will probably live a decent life there.

I never lived in LA, but I think the worst part of living there would probably be the parking and traffic. Even though transportation there is excellent, it will take you forever to get anywhere. For instance, going from North Hollywood to downtown LA might be a 2 hour bus ride, depending on the traffic.

The problem with LA is that it is a huge city, so you need a car to get around. However, the population density is very high which means that there are too many cars on the roads. I remember when I was there, I was shocked that I was stuck in a traffic jam on I-405 (Sepulveda Pass) and it was 7PM. Apparently that's normal!

Not sure. I've only been to Chicago once or twice. I think the rent there is better, but in any big American city it can be just as pricey, especially if you want to live in good area while being in or near downtown. At least with Chicago you have the option to live in the suburbs and commute. You will be forced to pay tolls on the highway though.

As for the American dream, honestly I think it is dead. After the tech bubble burst in the 2000s and the economic depression of 2008, we've gained more low-income jobs than middle-income ones, while the top 20% of income earners in the country are getting richer. We're seeing more IT companies outsourcing their work to countries like India because they can pay 1/3 of the wage for the same amount of work done. These multi-national corporations abuse these tactics the most, to save on wage costs. They base their companies outside of America, simply to avoid paying American's corporate tax (35% ish). The kind of greed that these companies have just disgusts me. These corporations use all sorts of tricks to avoid paying taxes, like transferring their assess to affiliated non-profit organizations. Corporate America and the US politicians use loopholes in the tax system to force regular Americans to foot the tax now, IMO. Thinking about this makes me wonder how the hell this country is going to work out in the future, if it's completely based on consumerism. I can't see how a consumer and service-based economy will work if you don't have a middle class anymore. Also, I think this country is going to be fucked once the intellectuals and foreigners companies stop investing in our country.

I know someone (don't really know, just a few emails) who was a contractor in London for like 15 years but gave it up to be a permanent worker in Singapore last year. Went from £100k/year~ contract in London to nearer £150k/year as a perm in Singapore

What i meant by money here is saving rather than ability to support a certain lifestyle. Extra money = earnings - expenses, so you can blow thru 150k in Singapore much faster than say, 100k in ireland.

Salary number isn't everything... just saying. And while this sounds like the most obvious point, the math sometimes can be shocking. There's a huge difference when your mandatory expenses are higher by say a thousand a month... that's 20k salary difference before taxes.. you must remember to count most mandane stuff like car insurance, phone, and yearly condo association fees to get the full picture. That's why I'm saying California can have you living like a slave with 100K+ yearly salary. That barely covers living expenses.
