The graphic driver source and documentation for Rasperry Pi was just released. Who can mod these drivers and running Quake III first with good FPS? Run Q3A in 1920x1080, minimum 20fps. The winner gets 10,000 dollars, sponsored by Raspberry Pi!
It would have made way more sense to aim for 125 fps.
Otherwise you are treating q3 like an rts. And at this point, there are more famouse games with graphic similar to quake, like dota.
Their goal isn't to further optimise things, it is to port the newly open sourced code over to the pi and make sure that the open sourced version is no worse than the closed source version. Hence setting the goal at something they can already achieve.
"The aim of the contest is to port the Broadcom VideoCore IV open source graphics driver stack to run on Raspberry Pi, and to deliver implementations of libGLESv1_CM.so and libEGL.so which can run Quake III time demo four, at a resolution of 1920×1080 and a minimum of 20fps, without making use of the capabilities of the blob (the Requirements)."
They just want the new open source drivers ported, the Q3 part is just to make sure most features of the port work. And because Q3 is (or was) generally used as a standard hardware benchmark test.
Or even just a composite video output? It wouldn't make sense to render at a higher rez than it can display. Come to think of it what is the best refresh rate a Pi can do? 30hz? 60hz?
its able to encode in 1080p30fps and has a HDMI output (you can even see that one on the screenshot)
its pixel clock limit is 1080p/60hz or 720p/120hz according to http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
I'd say that sounded like the most stupidest thing ever, but for 10,000 I would fucking do something like that even if there's limitations with the Raspberry PI.
