So I've been in China for just over a year now as a J2EE developer & today I handed in my resignation. Main reason for quitting = the job is boring as fuck. Anyone who enjoys JSP is a homosexual. Besides being homo there was also very little work to do. In the 12 months I've been here there's been maybe 3 weeks where I've felt busy all week rather than having a small enhancement that takes 2 days or a couple of bug fixes. Online shopping/tweeting/playing on phones is common within my team throughout the day.
I had kept in touch with the company I worked for as an intern in the UK & they opened up a new junior DBA job up for me after I emailed my old boss & now I've accepted the role (I find learning about databases more interesting). The pay is standard for a fresh graduate (24k...although higher than what they normally pay for a junior there) but I expect to be promoted within a year & then its 30-35k/year. They'll also pay for me to have official training which is over 2k for 5 days.
The UK still sucks though so my plan is to return for 2-3 years and then go back to China (although not in this city and probably not near here). I tried to find a DBA job here but they all wanted 2+ years experience except for one (...they didnt even reply to my app so I guess they want fluent Mandarin).
- Travel: My last day at work is Aug 10th but I asked to start my new job on Sep 10th so I have almost 1 month to travel around China. I'm also hoping the company will let me have the training in China too (course + flight + hotel in China is cheaper than doing it in the UK) then I can have a free holiday & travel around the Eastern cities
- Chocolate: a box of ferrora roches in UK costs like 3-4quid...in china its 8-10quid...crazy fucking import taxes. Cheapo morrisons biscuits too (Y)
- Savings: If I work at that company for 3 years I expect to save around 40k during that time as I'll live at home.
- Weather: It's fucking roasting here.
- Language: I can ask someone their job and know what their title actually is :o
- Internet: it sucks here.
- QuakeLive: theres only like 30 people & 2 servers here so I'm limited to 1v1 and CA. There's only like 2 people at a similar 1v1 level to me :(
- Football: It's all 2am stuff here =/
- Chinese food: It tastes better in Birmingham
- Mingers: fat, ugly, English girls
- Chavs: luckily my bus trips are pretty limited (tram nearby) so I can at least avoid the shitty phone music playing
- Job uncertainty: The company I'm returning to is being bought out. Potential of staff cuts in 1-2 years. If it's in 2 years then it's not such of a big deal but 1 year would be -_ still...it's probably all the different management levels who will go rather than the 13 DBAs looking after 300+ DBs.
Right now I'm building my list of places to visit on my trip :o It'll start with an overnight bus, on my last day of work, heading to the next province (same as a county).
Overall this last year has pretty much been a waste of time. Any savings I've earned during the year are lost when you factor in my flights to/from China. I'll also be taking a different job path so the J2EE experience isn't so relevent. A better choice would have been to start work there right out of university (my old boss asked me a couple months before graduating but at that point I had already accepted this job). Oh well =( start practicing nubs
