doesn't seem that much revolutionary to me. It's improving 20 years old technology all over again (like most gaming peripherals), while major changes aren't actively developed or aren't making it to the general public.
You'll be still watching a flat screen (2 in this case). The game is made so that it tricks you into thinking you are watching a 3d environment, whereas it's still 1 (or 2) regular screen(s).

Also that not only needs special drivers for the accessory itself, but changing bits of the game as well. In short, it won't work perfectly for....99.99999% of games.

Finally, the first version will obviously be filled with bugs, and as of now it will be very expensive and therefore impractical (with $500 you get a lot more than that). I can see some uses for that in very specific areas, but not with that price.
It's like what nvidia is doing with 3d technology right now. Absurdly expensive (about $5000 for everything you want), first version wasn't that good, and nowadays it isn't much of an improvement.

But as I said in other thread, I'll probably but it since I like computer peripherals. Not the first version though.

right now it costs 500 dollars, but in massproduction i guess it could be cheaper.

>It's improving 20 years old technology all over again
yep, nothing more, nothing less. but i seen nobody with this popularity before who did it. if it works, its a start.

I'm not sure if you got where JC is heading. The headmount will use motion, tilt and compass sensors so you will actually see in-game where you're looking at in the real world. In perfect 3D. You could only improve on that virtual reality by building a holodeck, which is close to impossible.

That's also a big difference to a normal 3D headmount that shows the same image regardles of your head movement.

Additional to that he wants to get the image smooth enough so the illusion won't be destroyed by slow picture update. He wants it so that even a slight tilting of the head will be perfectly translated to the virtual world.

all 5 ideas are just stating the obvious, and for that you don't need to try it. I never said it won't work or that it won't be awesome. Can't believe I have to repeat that 3 times because people can't read.

1. It isn't new technology.
2. won't be a shocking new experience. Examples of what constitute it are when he perfected both 2d and 3d pc gaming.
3. support is of the essence.
4. obvious bugs.
5. luxury product of something that does the same function in an already niche market, hence won't reach most customers.

I heard that they were definitely not announcing any new titles. I haven't really been following the E3 coverage at all though. The optimist in me is still scanning the horizon for HL3 though I guess.

And yeah, Watch Dogs looks outstanding.

60 is not a high frame rate (doom3), pc ports are always terrible and you have to admit the company went downhill since q3.

actually I'm just playing LoL, lol.

60fps is far good enough. id is a company, not a charity. Doom3 sold pretty well. Rage sold pretty decently.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that quake3 sold less than doom3 did, even counting the multiples copies that a lot of people seem to have bought.

60fps isn't a high framerate compared to what their prior games used to support. Also it is the industry's standard for fps games hence not "high".

Can't say anything about console games since that's what they should have done in 1999, but you have to admit Doom3 and Rage were both awful in comparison to what the industry had to offer even 2 years before their release.

Also both didn't sell well since those 2 were the only 2 major titles they released in 12 years. There's a reason why id software was bought by zenimax you know.

I guess you haven't watched any of the videos - carmack has been pushing for 120hz displays for the HMD work. He also talks about rendering at 500fps with tearing to get better immersion with the HMD.

you are entitled to have an opinion about quake even though you suck at it. Not only the president can talk about politics, but you weigh up ideas mostly based on actual arguments and some in reputation.

considering he's the lead man in charge of id's engines, do you think 60fps is good enough for doom4 or quake5 multiplayer? He did that in doom3 and quake4, and you know It simply wasn't suitable for those titles.

At least he now prefers 60 over 30, whereas before he stated there was the possibility of his games using 30fps in sp and 60 in mp..

Haven't played Rage yet.

I actually enjoyed doom3. It came out around the time when everything was becoming scripted like hell or hyped like shit to end up being a generic 6 hours piece of zzz ( bge lalala ) and it actually did something only a few games have been able to do since : make me use my imagination. You're in for the ride or you're not but it won't hold your hand.

It's one of the most generic fps games I have ever played, both sp and mp.

not nearly as scripted as the MoH games I'd play were, I don't remember the hype at all ( though I wasn't really heavy on the interwebz back then ) and a few jedi mind tricks worked wonder.

carmack showed on e3, behind closed doors, for journalists only, a headset from Lucky Palmer. this headset is called "Oculus Rift" and was modified from john.

"However, when he placed it on my head and fired up "Doom 3 BFG," the results were astounding. I felt like I was literally standing in the game, with full 360-degree vision and interactivity throughout the scenario. I only had a few minutes inside the game, but the potential and payoff for this VR head mount was truly astounding."

- I did try (very very carefully) making a direct laser retinal scanning display. It turns out that eye positioning is a huge issue.
- Kinect PC was one of the first things I tried as a sensor, but the long latency killed it as an option almost immediately.

yes, hes not invented something new. it was something similiar like the java rpg games. he saw the bad mobile games and did his own version / he bought the sony headset for 1.500 dollars "and it sucked" and tweaked it.

just to clarify, I never said it will suck. Actually I said I'm probably buying its v2 or v3.

Thing is this won't be mainstream and won't be that much of a change either, just like all expensive peripherals (keyboards, trackballs, etc. etc.)

Comparing trackballs to Virtual Reality devices that actually work seems reasonable :pp

If it works and with demand prices will fall attracting more customers etc. Could be a big deal. It has huge potential, 3D led LCDs just don't cut it.

it's just comparing prices of luxury versions of equipment that overall does the same function or isn't necessary.
3D, virtual reality, good mech keyboards (not these new gaming things), etc. don't make you more productive or make players improve. All of those have been there for decades (google and youtube if you want) yet they are a niche, used by even less people than all quake players.

That's why it doesn't have a huge potential. It won't be bought by more than a thousand customers globally.

wut? The point of VR isnt player improvement, its inmersion and suspension of disbelief. It isnt targeted to pro players attending Quakecon.

You obviously dont pay enough attention then. Eg, in one of the quakecon keynotes he talked about how the FAA wanted proof of the quality of his code that is running on the on-board computers. He was shocked that instead of doing things like code reviewing they were just interested in the ISO9001 style "written process" of how it was written, and not actual quality of code.
