So, basically, you were so nervous and overwhelmed with the upcoming experience of going into this interview that when you finally conducted it, the ID guys got you into thinking that they were actually right and doing a decent job and you were wrong. Well, bad news, sir. That's just bollocks.

I understand completely the human aspect of doing interviews. I sometimes do work for a gaming internet TV station and interviewing players like Fatal1ty or rapha can be a challenge. But the problem with the ID guys is that if I was to make an interview with them (and God, I'd really like to do one), I wouldn't want to make friends or plunge into this whole "having a nice chat" thing. I'd ask them tough questions and depending on the answer, I would argue with them. Because I honestly believe that ID is doing a bad job and maybe you even ought to have a discussion with them, not just an interview.

They have a man to take care of competitions 24/7? There was a topic at ESR that people from all over the world explained how they were utterly unable to contact ID and the number of LAN Parties that didn't have a Quake Live tournament due to their lack of support is probably in hundreds now. This is a fucking disgrace.

They care about what the community says? Yeah, they do it more than other developers. But, the game is more than 10 years old. The community had the time to figure out what it exactly wants and needs. And when the community raises issues about important things, ID doesn't even care to respond to them.

I could go on.

Anyway, the article is beautifully written. I wish I was a native English speaker, I would love to be able to write like that and it would be much easier if I was born elsewhere. But, this is pretty much the only thing that you did right. You shouldn't try for the interview to be nice and pleasant. You should get some answers about issues that are inconvenient for ID to discuss. Because there are lots of them.

Then maybe it was a problem of your approach. I'm interested in getting some obvious issues with the game explained and an ETA on resolving them (or a reason why they won't be.) That's what I want to know and I think that is what the community in general wants to know, as well. You just wanted to talk to them and describe what you were told.

With these things, I'm usually looking at the ending first to check out if the whole shebang is worth reading. And when somebody, in the end, is telling you how he wondered "if I couldn't be doing something more to better myself and the world around me" you already know that he failed to tell things apart and maintain a critical and analytical distance.

Not that the goal itself is bad, not at all. But it's so utterly and totally unrelated.

I may be passionate about the subject - I love the game after all - but when it comes to actually doing something, you cannot let yourself just scream at the lad that you're interviewing and tell him that what he's saying is bullshit.

I think we can agree that Quake Live is not a game that we thought it would be when it was first announced. And there are reasons for that. I would just state my reasons into thinking why ID is doing a bad job. And I would like to get some answers. That's what I would like from an interview like that.

They never said or announced they were going to add aerowalk or any map in particular, so if you have been waiting for it for a year thats your problem.

Also at some point they decided to make new maps a part of the subscription model, so adding them had to wait for that to be complete.
And yeah people had to wait for that because clearly quakelive is not the number one priority at id software, hell it's probably not even their number 2345 priority. I really don't understand why that is so hard to understand or accept for people.

I'm sorry but thats just total bullshit. Q3 community was split into different mods, even between mods where the gameplay was almost similar. Most of the playerbase was driven away by the choices made by a very small community, and now you're mad id wont allow the same to happen for QL? Q3 community had years to refresh the map pool, but failed. The worst part about playing QL is needing to bear q3 guys trying to impose their will on everything to make QL just like Q3, DEAD. If you repeat the mistakes made in the past you probably end up getting the same result, is that what you want?

Basically, there are two alternatives: either they didn't think of tourneys at all when introducing private servers, which means that their claimed attention to competitive side of quake is a lie, or they're simply bloody incompetent as they didn't foresee such an obvious issue. In either case, it doesn't fit in that positive description of id you provided.

a) id software cares about tournaments

But then you are seemingly unwilling to accept by any means that id actually failed here. Competitive features were available for open tourneys before, there is possibility to make them available now (see Quakecon, AFAIK it doesn't require paid accounts), but they're not available for independent tourneys. This is no issue that emerged because of development, this is a feature that is already implemented, but disabled.

It makes development seem more complex than it actually is. Design possibilities are very limited. Gives the impression, id employs too many left-brains. Too much math, not enough philosophy.

Questions asked by users today are questions addressed by the development team weeks and months ago, but QuakeLive isn't so simple as a game engine or gametype. There is an extensive backend and frontend acting as the modern game menu to take into consideration, and there is the intricate management of team resources and time in order to address pressing issues and the addition of features. QuakeLive is, much like the old web site adage, always under construction. Couple this in-production mentality with the team's awareness of community desires and the statistics generated from data gathered through actual gameplay, sprinkle in a bit of faith in the id philosophy, and you have a very unique recipe for success in game development.

I believe this is not true at all, at least at this point, or I'm completely not aware of it ? And it should be true, especially as they are thinking of QL as of service they are providing. Unless they are considering support tickets 'availability 24 hours a day', where also few days is needed to receive a response, so I wouldn't call that non-stop support.

Hell, I had to reschedule few weeks announced competition, just cause I couldn't get an answer from them when was extremely important.

Much more work is needed from their side just to provide what they are already talking about (and charging for).

But let's hope they are on the right tracks.

As Slasher has alreay said the substance of your article is quite slim compared to your writing capability. I wouldn't go that far and call it nondescript. Rather a hymn of praise towards id and I promise you that a lot of people on esr gonna bash your article for this very reason. Some of that "criticism" might be justified but most of it will be the usally ranting of some powdered quake3 fags who don't get the intention, ideas and aim behind quake live at all.

Especially the one sided bashing against SyncError is unfair and all the hate amazes me again and again. But this said life isn't fair and if you make a mistake someone has to suffer for it. Whether deserved or undeserved doesn't matter as long as someone pays the price.

The fact that you are not paid doesn't mean you are immune to criticism when it comes to the IDEA of what an interview should be. to the fullest? heh, no, its not quite that good. a response like that in a payed support ticket is absolutely horrendous and unacceptable. can you imagine if you bought top tier support package for your dell and when you called them up they said 'sorry mate, hope you broken computer fixes itself'. that was just an example. i thought it was non-QL specific enough....
the problem is that QL project displays equal levels of awfulness in many aspects, and you just don't seem to be in tune with that, probably because you dont play the game.

QuakeLive is a business experiment, and a failing one, to this point. it's stuck between the ability to fulfill desires of relatively few unique minds and trying to monetize some sort of a generally appealing social gaming experience, which results in a half-implemented compromise. it is exactly because what i knew all along, and what you said is true, which is that they know what people have tried to communicate to them and have considered it, that I know not to expect any promising ideas from them and not to trust any potential promises. I am of course grateful for the original breath of life into the quake franchise and i enjoy it as much as I enjoy Q3, but it seems obvious to me that nothing new will come of it. it is their business prerogative to keep all the servers and gaming content under control, continuing to provide a marginally better experience than an 11 year old game, gradually bringing it up to date with a 10 year old mod's gaming features with minimal effort. meh, i've probably said way too much than the whole subject is worth speaking about.

You also talk about the human aspect, which doesn't mean shit when the purpose is commercial. The only worthy point is that the dev team may love the game, which would be great if true. But let's look at the facts. ID hasn't yet implemented GTV or MVD, but has made tons of updates involving colors, skins and awards. I'd translate that into "love for pretty colors", not "love for the game".

If you're thinking that my initial assumption of ID paying you for this article is unfair, I'll just point your assumption that anyone criticising is doing so to boost their ego and vent their frustration from years of neglect. so, i've reread this article after years, and offer an analysis: the article was very lacking in information due to the subjects of the interview being overly-cautious of exposing too much, especially due to the recentness of the id software acquisition by zenimax.

steve nix quit shortly after this interview, also, and the development team was cut from 10 to 1. shortly after these changes, quake live development and direction made a huge turn from fulfilling the philosophy of quake gameplay to desperately attempting to attract new players by changing the game.

and i'd just like to say that when i originally wrote this article, my goal was to objectively express my experience. my experience was that the discussion i had with steve & sync was a bit inspirational and motivational. was i duped by people who persuaded me to believe in their motivates? maybe, but that only serves to show my own humanity, and further illustrates the reality of ql development.

i was in a period of my life where i was beginning to recognize just how much work it really takes to be successful. life is not simply a talent lottery, and there are people who dedicate years upon years of effort to achieve singular goals. that was the impression that i got from steve nix and from syncerror: that they were devoting themselves to achieving something great.

i was not there to antagonize them into accepting responsibility for failure, etc., and though i may have asked questions about ETAs or other specifics, i did not find value, personally, in those topics. what i found value from was the mindset of direction. what i developed from this interview was that telling myself i was going to do something for esr by going to quakecon, by pushing myself to experience new things, by contacting marketing and obtaining press credentials, by putting myself in the mix, i achieved something, and from that achievement i produced something.

it was a very educational and enlightening experience, and i think that some people, even people who commented here, saw the circumstances and appreciated what i contributed for what it is, not for what they wanted or desired or expected.

i wonder if syncerror could comment about this article after these years have passed?
