There's no real answer to that question, sometimes shit happens unless you do obvious things to invoke it. In my expereince unless its old its usually due to the user doing something to it.

The drive is the most important thing, so buy the drive seperately, then buy a cheapy enclosure as they often compromise on the drive when its all in one.

I've had a portable external hard-drive, bout the size of a wallet for years now and it's never died. Picked it up from WHSmith for next to nothing. You can pick up ext-HDs pretty easy nowadays and in the rare event they break they're not hard to replace. Also got a ext-HD a bit like the one you linked from Amazon and it never died.
