I'll agree, it was SOMEWHAT cheap statement, he didn't have to say that, but I guess he needed to say something to show he's still 'the best'...at something.

I know where you're coming from, I've seen a couple interviews by him, and I never noticed him taking cheap shots to promote his talent, more or less his products. I remember the 60 minutes interview, and he was asked "So, you're the best in the world, right?". Modestly, he said "Well...I'm good". He could of easily said "Yeah, I'm the best in the world" without any problem, because I guess at the time, he was. Sure, it would of been egotistical as fuck, but, he didn't say it.

I do agree with you that he tries to take every opportunity to talk about himself, except it's with his products. I remember an interview with him a month or so after UT3 was out, and he was asked if he played UT3 or not. His reply was "I've been on the road a lot, promoting the fatal1ty brand, so I haven't been able to play it at home. I've played it a bit on other PC's around here, but not at home with the Fatal1ty sound card, playing it the way it's meant to be heard".

That I don't agree with it...but what can you do.

I roomed with fat at eswc 2003 and what vo0 said is pretty much how I thought there. He wasn't very confident and kept saying things to see how we'd react. At one stage he said "if this tournament was only about aim I'd easily win". With gitzzz etc in the field that year, that was so far wrong it was ridiculous.

Other players smack talk too. So I wouldn't make a deal out of it

Well there's clearly some trauma from his parent's divorce and then the messy scenario created by him basically leaving his mother because she wanted him to stop playing quake. Something insane like that.

People are so closed to their own narrow socio-moral norms though. There are countries where every normal person in the country displays the same kind of "pride" as Fatal1ty. In fact, in many places the kind of christian humility preached in the west is looked upon as lack of confidence and as "weakness".. I've thought about it a bit, and really - the humility displayed by many people eventually just becomes a nuisance; they drag you down with them.

He always says he's going to come back and compete, so, I'm pretty sure he's going to need one REALLY good excuse to not compete in Quake Live for 2009.

I'm really curious if he can catch up to the current top 5. if QL will be a decent esports game (in terms of tournament quantity) his only chance to secure his reputation is to fully compete and end up in the top 3 at least. If he doesn't compete people will say he's a coward if he does, and fails, he'll have a hard time keep saying he's the world champion (whatsoever).

I disagree. He has nothing to prove that he hasn't proven already. I wouldn't expect Michael Jordan to go back to playing basketball anymore than I'd expect Fatal1ty to go back to playing quake.

well, the comparison with michael jordan is a bit far fetched if you ask me but ok. the difference between those two is that michael jordan is now way too old to do what he did in his glorious days (so physical reasons for not being on top anymore) whereas fat is still young (if age matters in gaming anyway). plus fat never quit gaming officially whereas jordan retired two times just to come back and still kick almost everybodys butt. and if fat doesn't play anymore quake because he was on top many years ago and therefore has nothing to prove we (and especially himself) should stop saying that he is the 'best player' in the world but say he 'was'. I'm not sure if I could make myself clear but we'll see how everything turns out anyway. so i leave it at that. :)

Age does matter in gaming. Your reactions do get slower and especially your motivation is a lot less . but it's rather secondary and pointless discussion. For him, who flies around the world doing his fatal1ty brand deals, making tons of money, seeing places, meeting people, I am not gonna criticize him for not wanting to compete anymore.

I don't exactly know who is saying he is the best player in the world, however, he has won plenty. And those "titles", if you wanna call them that, is something you cannot take away from him.

Not sure what you are on about quitting "officially". Only because you still do "gaming" doesn't mean you need to compete in competitions.
He just likes playing games.... I am sure Michael Jordan still plays basketball. Maybe not in the NBA, but in his own court with a couple of friends or doing some promotional events or whatever.

Age, I suspect is only part of it. I can't imagine reflexes start to deteriorate that quickly - and I doubt reflexes can be cited in an argument about zero4 vs cypher.

I suspect (and I believe it's been mentioned already) the only reason younger players (av3k/cypher etc) might stand more of a chance against the 'older' players is probably down to time availability. They've got that much more time to practice whilst the older players have more commitments/life concerns.

However, I don't know how Fatality factors into that equation...

I'm sure he's already got fair bit of money behind him, so I'm sure he's financial stable - and I'm sure he's busy promoting his product line or whatever else he does with his spare time. But, I imagine out of all the 'old' players he's the one that is most capable of freeing up his personal time to practice and make a comeback.

Whether he wants to or not, and actually does is an entirely different matter altogether. But I reckon he could devote as much time, if not more to training to come back in QL as Av3k and Cypher can.

I never said they cannot compete with the youngster. I merely stated that gamers are affected by age just like proper athletes. Everything changes as you get older. And it's pretty retarded to argue about how long someone can compete in "e-sports" when it is barely 15 years old...

I wasn't the greatest quaker around, but now that I am quite a bit older then I was back in the early days of Quake3, I feel that Ì can't perform as good as then anymore.

Reaction speed might be a bit slower, but mostly it's motivation I think. Back then I wanted to play the best players out there and I wanted to do as good as possible versus them. I was really motivated for a good result. Right now I hate to play good players, just because it's fucking exhausting playing an optimal game of Quake3!

I have no idea how to change this "motivation problem".

I think it's just the result of priorities changing in life as you get older.

I think when your back at school your studies are the last thing you really think about and having fun and playing some games can rank pretty high. You also have the free time to do that and not worry about other things. It's also pretty easy to get carried away and have aspirations to play for a good clan, or be a top player and win money.

I think in reality as you move past that age you start to realise that it's not possible for everyone and only really a select few. You realise that you need a regular reliable income to pay the rent and bills and the more time you spend doing that, the less time you have to devote to training and playing games. Gaming becomes more of a casual hobby, and it can only get increasingly more casual as your life commitments increase at work and at home.

it's not only that but the rewards for success in the working+non-gaming world are much more consistent, not to mention better, than the gaming world. spend 5 years programming and see if you aren't in a better apartment with a better job. now spend 5 years playing quake 3 and see if you aren't in the same chair with the same desk.

you always have a choice about what you do to pay the bills, but once you get to 21-22 years old, it's pretty hard to go home and practice rocket jumps after seeing that guy roll down the road in a porsche with a hot chick next to him.

it's not just the pressure of having a reliable income, it's what a high reliable income can get you.

I don't really care to count how many years back his achievements are by now. 5? 6? 7? It doesn't matter. it's like you're trying to deny him credit for his achievements. He doesn't really have any obligation to play despite the fact that he could. And I am surely not gonna complain between "is" and "was", because everyone who cares that much about the difference between those two words in the context of "pro gaming history" (<- LOL) already knows better.

I agree that fatal1ty has nothing left to prove but I'd just like to point out that imo you can't compare the history of actual sports and internet-based games.

It's on such a different and faster scale. Since it's relatively easy to set-up tournaments (hah) and that news and coverage are so easily available (n1 quakecon) , it's as if every large tournament (WCG, ESWC, CPL, etc.) become as important as say, a World Cup or an FA cup final. If you think about it, there were a LOT of important titles to fight for in Quake (for exemple), for such a short existence.

So yeah, i'd say there's definitely some good history already made in the FPS games, let alone all the other genres and platforms of gaming (Mr. Pacman anyone? :) )

You can't make a comparaison either with basketball since it is WAY more competitive (that's one) and two, basketball is a lot more about physical endurance than gaming will ever be. If it's true your reactions may lose a very small amount of time, it's not that much of a big deal compared to the basket ball's loss of physical abilities.

As much as I agree with the age factor, this can't be that much of a big deal, and if he used to be the best quaker in the world at one point, that means he should be able to be a high seed if he was to start competition again. (and as much as I believe the overall skill level has increased a lot since 2001)...

Atleast I'm not forming my worthless opinions based on interviews I saw of a person. I have actually met and spoken to him quite a few times so I actually do know what I'm talking about. Who the fuck are you to call me out on that.

Hes someone that looks at things from a third person perspective like most of us that dont get to these events.

Seems most comments i have read over the years from people that have met/spoken to fatal1ty have stated that hes a really nice guy and not up his own ass.

The fact is he HAS won a shitload of tournaments spanning a variety of games, not always against the top players if they arent there but it aint his problem, he has won and is clearly one of the best gamers of the decade.

Too many people who 'only saw him in an interview' seem to form their own opinions about how overrated the guy is and how he is scared to play, or sucks and only got lucky or played shit players.

Always people shittalking him, but its all just jealousy at the end of the day. I thought ur comment on him in this thread was a bit shitty, but then he did pip u on the final of PKWT and guess ur a little bitter about it.

As for me, i dont know either of you so i couldnt really give a toss about who likes who, but i know from following q3 from the start that hes one of the best players of all time, and if i had to stake my life on the outcome of a duel between the 2 of u it would be on him.

To me at quakecon he was a nice person. He is a nice person, but he inserts his little brags into his chats too much. Basicly, I've noticed it since I met him at, and he still does it nowadays. We were talking about FRAG Movie documentary and it was about Rafik beating him in South Africa and that Rafik was on the cover and it mostly featured him (Lost-Cause that is). So ofcourse, he has to mention quickly that he "completely destroyed" him 2 months later but that they still chose South Africa. Little things like that I sum up and come to realize that he still feels he needs to find gratification among people around him.

I don't understand why people still try to downgrade the pk world tour. maybe there have been only a few players but it's not like these players were mainly noobs. In fact the game was pretty well stacked with top players. only because there was no cooller or czm doesn't make the competition easy. and if we talk about numbers: I don't think there are much more top players in Q3 nowadays. some players came back yes, but a shitload of players is missing also (lexer,stelam,zyz,stermy e.g.) And don't get me wrong, this reply isn't intended to downgrade Q3 ;)
