It's really not difficult to beat Reflex, I'm sure it will.

But I'd be amazed if it beats QC in terms of playerbase, even though the game will probably be much better.

No I'm pretty sure you didn't. If so, it cannot have been in relation to any serious game mode.

Could somebody point out for me why this is going to be better than warsow&reflex? I'm not being sceptical, i just really don't know.

Amirite that diabotical is aimed mostly on quake purists, who didnt find a new shooter after qlive banged the crypt door on the cemetry?

As for features, the one thing that seems to stand out to me is that you'll be able to make custom game modes/physics.

If you're looking forward to it for the playerbase be ready to be disappointed.

Nah, I'm managing my expectations. I don't expect it to do any better than QC.

Besides, I'm a CPM/Reflex player, I'm used to communities with 17 players.

Do you find something special about reflex and warsow? Let you hint.. aircontrol... ql failed becouse no rank system, no rankings/leaderboards, no matchmaking. DB will have it. Will have customisations for skins. Will have very good tools for 3rd party to create content. Few intresting modes team ffa etc. Good engine ant netcode from the box. Tournament futures. Lobby like on games like WOW where all waiting players can spend time in one location before they find a game, whitch gives you feeling you are not alone. And so on. DB not gonna be pubg csgo level, but 25k active player base would be dream.

And its not aimed for quake purists, becouse look how game looks ;)

Who cares what it looks like, most quakers play with picmip 10 and other tweaks like lod anyways. As long as it plays good and is modable and funny enough to build and sustain a community it will be heaven sent. Yes eggbots aren't the sexiest thing, maps are looking rather dull at the moment but when it comes to maps they haven't had much cosmetic overhaul if any, just straight out of the editor. It's not about the looks, it's about a lot of other things among of which some have been mentioned allready in this thread. I think there is a possibility for this game to make it, not big but make it big enough. James have mentioned tourneys, let's hope it starts invthe right end with community tourneys, team based tourneys, online to hopefully spark an intrest and from there lan tourneys. If we're lucky we all could be taking part in a successful project for once :) after all I think we deserve it for not having given up on quake ;)

One of main problems

lack of resources, small dev teams, no marketing, no perspective, lack of planning, internal problems, aesthetics, innovative gamemodes that still dont break the game, slow development, broken promises, etc....

but yeah, having aircontrol is far more important than all of that above, one of the main issues without a doubt because if reflex was vq3 it would have over 4k players daily like QC.

What about Painkiller then? That game even appeared on MTV back when it was popular, and still it was played by like 3 and a half people.

Simple air control (whether with +forward only or strafe aircontrol) is a simpler mechanic than strafejumping.

Maybe i am a litlle biased. I hate aircontrol in quake games. In cs its ok ;))

Abilities are an even simpler mechanic than air control.

I think Diabotical has a greater chance of being a success, mainly because of two things.

1. Matchmaking / Build in tournament system
This is the main feature missing from all other arena shooters (some might have added it later, but way too late for initial launch hype).
When you play a game that is so demanding of personal skill, you need some way to feel that you are making progress, even when you are getting stomped.

2. Not being released into early access.
Nothing wrong with early access, except when you release a game into early access without the features needed to sustain it's expected playerbase. When you finally get to a state where the game have the features it should have had at launch, you probably won't get enough people to give it a second chance.

I see the community and modding posibilities as the deciding factor. why diabotical will stand out.
like making own maps, game modes, tourneys, lobbies, movies etc. etc.

2gd knows his fps inside out and the team made some amazing choices. It will be good for sure, because we will make it good

the map editor in particular is a thing of beauty.

If it works half as good as the clips promise, I will surely devote some good time into making a competent map or two

And for a short time at the start of the game, the map editor was the flagship feature. New maps were constantly being released and more importantly, people were constantly playing new maps. It was the only thing that made Reflex unique. Sure, the hud editing stuff and steam integration was nice, but those don't drastically alter the game. Maps do. But then, amongst all the pretty good maps, a really good map was released (thct7) and true to form, we pretty much stopped playing anything else unless there was money on the line. The map editor quickly became just another novelty feature, while it should've been the defining feature.

I hope 2gd is smart enough to realize you need constant new maps to keep the game interesting for the older generations and accessible for the new generation. The only way to do that is to give people a financial incentive, because otherwise people will gravitate to their comfort zone and only play one or two maps. In other words, please 2gd, make sure there are regular new map cups.
