From what the dude told me... they buy keys in bulk under a corporate license (i.e. for reformatting a ton of office pc's) and sell the extras on the side. It's definitely shady, for my "payment" I bought "1 month of server time" instead of a direct payment for keys. However, everything I bought has worked perfectly and I have zero complaints.

For reference, I bought a windows 7 key, a windows 8.1 key, an office 2010 key, and an office 2013 key.

Unsurprisingly it turns out its not legit. They are selling keys only. For it to be legit, you want a license. Its like buying the key to a house for $1000 without the deed and you think you made a great deal. Sure you can get in, but you still dont own it. Might as well use the free pirated windows version, not much of a difference - either way, you wont have a legit license to use the software, and at least you dont support crooks that way.

Although the keys will likely activate. Apparently they use a MSDN subscription to generate keys or Technet or whatever. The keys will stop working when Microsoft kills the MSDN account. That wouldnt immediately render Windows useless, but if you need to reactivate when you reinstall a year from now the key is likely to not work anymore. Or maybe it will, if you are lucky.

Interesting. Well I only gave them $50 and I'm likely going to purchase W10 completely legitimately when it comes out so I'm not too concerned. And I suppose I feel "safer" just using a key than using a pirated keygen from a random torrent.

they are basically having oem license key that are beeing issued by microsoft with intention to be sold with assorted hardware, that beeing said from legal standpoint they are bound to the hardware purchased and shouldnt be sold separately

If Microsoft wants not to be robbed anymore, then they must let go the directx license! I use Windows because Microsoft got the monopoly of games platform, which is a form of robbery. Of course there are emulators under Linux/UNIX but it would usually affect the performance.

There are only 2 versions, they simplified it a lot, as a normal user/gamer, the Home edition should be fine. (That said I purchased Windows 7 Professional, so I will be getting the Pro version, but I do the majority of my work on my home pc)

There's 5 altogether that have to do with the win10 upgrade. But kb3035583 is the most intrusive one. And that one added considerable time to bootup for me.

While searching about these updates, I came across another thing that pissed me off. There's something called "Computer Experience Improvement" and "Application Experience". Both collect "telemetry" data about a system and send it to MS. That's supposedly only if you opt into the program.

Control Panel>Action Center>Change Action Center Settings>Computer Experience Improvement Program Settings

Mine was set to no, but open up task scheduler and you'll see two tasks in there under Microsoft: "Application Experience" and "Computer Experience Improvement". All the components for each of these tasks is enabled and running, you can confirm this by checking out event log entries. What a bunch of shit.

Yeah, I have a SSD too. I noticed cause usually on the logo screen at bootup it would never take long enough for that windows logo to form. Those dots would get like halfway or so. After one of those updates above (I think it was the kb3035583), the logo not only formed, but it would sit on that screen for several seconds after.

It's not slower at all, it's even better than win7 when it comes to memory management, but I wouldn't hurry if I were you. It's nice to play around with it if you are interested or work with Windows systems, but I suggest you stay with win7 until you need to upgrade because of a dx12 game. Win7 is fine, really.

I would say you'll probably be able to download and install it but it will fuck you up with its lack of a valid license afterwards. It will keep functioning but it will be crippled. Since they wouldn't want some hack to unlock the functions, they probably won't be there to start with. The download is probably gonna be a base copy and you'll still need to download a shitton of updates after once your license is validated.

we have a Windows 8.1 machine at work which was never activated with a serial key.

i used it for 2 years, it nags you to activate it from time to time, but in rest i didn't notice any limitations. granted, no one's using that computer for full time work, just for testing stuff and some development.

I've been using the final release version for about 2 weeks. I think it's pretty good. Most of the failures of Windows 8 have been addressed, the only things that are sucking are of course the windows software such as the browser and windows music app etc, otherwise usage is painless, and I would say it's a "minor" upgrade to windows 7.

Good balance between letting the user do anything he wanted or needed to do but also helping , also I cannot believe they took away the Start menu and the desktop screen as being your main screen. to me that's as bad as taking right click away takes most of your options if you don't know how to get back to it

i have minor issues with the drivers for my x-fi soundcard.(always reverts back to gamemode without any sound - after changing the mode the sound is back tho - so i use the automode switcher and bound firefox to it).

Started to have some issues with AMD drivers but the 15.7.1 drivers from yesterday cleared them up. :D I also used the tool provided by MS to block windows updates for drivers, so it won't do it automatically. Sad that such functionality isn't built into Win10 Pro.

There are tons of themes for Windows 8.1. Judging by this page, the theme I am working on in my screenshot looks very similar to this one. To use custom themes you need UxStyle to allow Windows to use modified styles.

I want to make a guide for ESR for installing Win10 just the way I did it, which works 100% successfully and smoothly so far. Is it an issue if I link to files that are not legit? I don't want the guide to be wasted on grounds of piracy.

Clean installations from a usb drive, automatic activation and updates working properly, and ability to obtain any version of Win10 (though I haven't tested this extensively enough). It would also help clear some of the doubts repeated everywhere.

I should also add here that Win10 isn't there yet, and waiting for a while makes sense. I'm in the field of administration/troubleshooting so fucking things up and then trying to fix them is a bit of schtick of mine :P

nah, it's the same as Win8 in my experience. I've always found the Win7 mouse feel to be better though, something's always a bit off with Win8/Win10. I reckon it's because of the way desktop compositing works in 8/10 compared to 7, and that's affecting some if not all games.

Yeah Windows update works without an issue.
In Win10 updating is mandatory, this includes security updates, feature updates, and driver updates. On the Home edition it will force update but on the Pro edition there is some additional control. An option called Defer Updates will force Win10 to install them later on, but only Microsoft chooses which ones get delayed and for how long. All security related updates will be forced either way.

You can use this official tool to restrict specific updates from installing automatically by 'hiding' them:

The automatic/forced driver updates is very annoying. Apart from that tool above, there is no way to stop them and Win10 will keep forcing them on your PC. And this is drivers for everything, including graphics, and I can imagine how many systems face problems because of this. A driver update also means all your settings within that driver software are also defaulted.

Win10 also force installs the latest drivers while it is first being installed (!) and you can end up with more pain during a first time setup.
All these issues can be worked around but I certainly found Win7/8 to be much more convenient when your objective is to have a computer up and running and tweaked ASAP.

Also, if you're interested, MarkC has released the Win10 mouse fix. Seems like it uses the same mouse code and scaling.

Another tip: If you have logged in and are using the Win10 Xbox app, go to Settings, click on Game DVR and turn it Off. This should help a number of game issues, fps drops and input lag.

Anyway, now my drivers are 8.something (basicly you can manualy install newer drivers) and whatching two streams at source on two different monitors is a NONO. + drivers crash the system so after a month it fubared win registery or boot files so i had to repair windows.

On the good side, QL works on 250fps most of the times - 95% of the time, the rest of 5% comp just resets.

It kept re-enabling the KB3035583 update on my 8.1 laptop plus I started to get random bluescreens even though I did not install or change anything other than windows updates in the past 2 months (coincidence?).

That annoyed me so much that I installed linux mint on it - it might not be perfect but at least it let's me run a web browser + my programming and math tools without trying to force some shit on me.

On my desktop I do not have much complains about windows 10. It is just ridiculous that you need turn off literally dozens of spying opportunities to have a normal os. Games run fine, it is stable and the interface is decent if you install classic shell or similar.

On the other hand there is still stuff like the vpn settings not working properly, and you have to use a text editor for configuration. I mean seriously, that has been a known bug since the release and Microsoft does not seem to give a shit. Makes me wonder if "power users" like me are actually in the target group of whatever Nadella has in mind for the future of Windows.

So I just upgraded a laptop to windows 10 and without making any other changes, suddenly it keeps losing the ethernet connection... about every 20 seconds it just cuts out for about 2-3 seconds. This is via cable, not wifi.

I've already unchecked "allow windows to turn this device off to save energy" in device manager but problem continues exactly the same.

Many games, especially with safedisc/SecuROM DRM.
With some you can f_k around and force most of this games to work, but.. this is hell.

Some games works only in windowed mode (Mafia 1).

If you aren't using PowerShell then you have not a single reason to install windows 10.

If you already did it, you need to f_k around with:
1) this compatibility problems
2) turning off/destroying all the spying shit (not confirmed it's possible on 100%)
3) with this awful interface, I use classic shell. Yes there are some good decisions in interface on win10 but overall it's awful. and no way of getting this beauty win2000-like classic interface.

The only good thing about win10: it has a f_king hell of a drivers included, so you don't need to search for every single driver and this new PowerShell (but most people don't need it).

Ok thanks. This isn't gonna be a problem for me... but I still don't really have a reason to update to Windows 10. I think I might switch at the very end of the free upgrade period.

There are actually one good edition of Windows 10:
Enterprise LTSB
It doesn't have all this shit, trash and cancer. It's Windows 10 after chemotherapy :D



Would recommend it and also Win 7 LTSB is a fine thing.

Also found Windows Server 2016. May be a good OS too.

So, we have now:
Windows Server 2016
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB
Windows 7 Enterprise LTSB

Need to find out which is best.
