Because streaming gives me a different feeling sensitivity wise unfortunately, even with stable 250 FPS, it just somehow doesn't feel the same. Also adds a few ping spikes there and there but that I didn't care much about.

Just can't afford to arrive at quakecon and then the sens doesn't feel the same.

Have you tried different capture methods like quicksync and shadowplay?

I'm already using my second graphic card to encode (shadowplay) and can not use quicksync with my current CPU, so yes I have. =P

shadowplay is directx only, doesn't work with OpenGL (which all the quakes are)

No vod so (paraphrasing): He said that when he started playing Quake1 he and his friends played keyboard only. He also had trouble finding the correct keys blindly so he configured it such that his pinky was on control and hence his keyboard layout. Then when they went to the Swedish championship they found out other players were using a mouse. So he moved the movement keys to the mouse. He also said it's probably better to have fire on mouse as it's easier to synchronize with aiming.

fazz has been a regular streamer for quite a while now, displaying considerable dedication to the people who follow him. Personally, I very much appreciate this dedication and discipline, and the total absence of any childish showmanship or extravaganza. In particular, he shares with people his genuine self and what he does, which is awesome. For me the best stream I've ever come across in the quake scene. The only one I regularly come back to for over half a year now, and gladly so.

Also the only one that will still be around in a month.

Dude, the commitment begins each time he fires up the stream remotely already, implicitly making a promise to get home first thing to please the crowd. Seriously, ole fazz is "pro" and accomplished in more ways than I care to enumerate. Staple of the community. Beacon. Salt of the earth. Constant, infallible source of comfort and relief.

That said, it's summer. That qcon preparation practice regimen seems way too cruel. The fun aspect. Times of relaxation, providing the muscle with opportunity for regeneration. Let's not forget about those.

I'm gonna explain toxic's rail style. It's what I used to do a long time ago when I cared about quake. It's to keep up consistency and eliminate bad habits.

Firstly, toxjq only rails when he can hit you properly. There's not really any flick action unless you surprise him and he absolutely must flick rail. If he misses 2 rails straight, he switches to another gun, gets comfortable again and then switches back to rail.

You will see him pull out MG for 2-3 shots in order for the enemy to start dodging in a pattern for MG then toxjq takes out rail and hits the easy shot.

You should notice that toxjq never takes out rail up close, he's eliminated this bad habit, because even if you hit the rail, the reload costs you time and if you miss and die you drop rail. Railing up close is just a ca scrub move. (looking at you nemesis)

In rail duels, he will prolong his rail or hold it until he has a perfect shot, no matter what the rail reload time is. Some people try to shoot right when the rail reloads because if you are both weak, the person shooting first wins. Toxjq doesn't care about the time, he wants to hit that shot even if it means he might die first.

Also by holding his rail shot, the enemy tries to dodge his rail based on time, spamming left/right harder, the longer the rail shot is held. And that is when toxjq finally fires. Because when ur spamming the fuck out of left/right your center ISNT moving at all. Only when ur doing moderate left/right is when ur dodging.

When toxjq is aiming his rail, he is either fully stopped (his model) and shooting the rail with just mouse movement or has stopped his crosshair and strafed onto the enemy. I call these wait rails. Because some part of you is waiting for the enemy to be lined up, either your model or your crosshair. If you are doing this style of railing, DO NOT MIX IT. Don't have yourself strafe + moving the crosshair at the same time. And don't do a lot of flick rails in combination with wait rails. These create a lot of inconsistency in your rail game. Pick 1 style you fuck, waiting or flicking.

Wait railers include:cypher,toxjq,strenx,evil, stermy
mixed type:dahang,twister,demon,spartie [never combine them]
flick railers: k1llsen, rapha, agent

I think he was more of a flick railer back in q3 days. His rail was probably even better the his lg back then. I saw him and avek on a server once, discussing rail in quake live.

Avek was spectating tox and asked him about his style of shooting with rail, tox then said that the rail is more unreliable in qlive and that it feels more random, like it doesnt register a hit when it should and vice versa, and thats why he started to use it like this.

Why would rail be more unreliable in QL?

It's pretty much common knowledge the netcode for QL online is pretty... random. And there are also problems with hit registration and/or the hit cylinder that presumably carry over to LAN. Thru rails in QL are exceedingly common.

why would I have to pick a style ? I wait when there's a reason to wait and I flick when there's a reason to flick, much like you said tox does sometimes.

Tox does it by accident, like if hes aiming at someone else and some fuck uses a jump pad in front of him he'll have to flick but more often than not, if he can help it, he won't even fire, just change from rail to another gun.

I mean look at spartie, he uses both styles, and has an INCREDIBLE RAIL. However it's never been consistently incredible. What picking 1 style does is force you into a pattern of where you believe in your rail and know exactly what shots you will be able to hit and what shots not to try.

For example spartie loves to do cheeky flick rails and most of the time he goes out of position (in duel) to try to hit them. When he misses he gets buttfucked. I will say that k1llsen should and can do this because flick railing is his style, he doesnt mix and match much so he has that feel for it. He plans his game style around it. Have you ever seen k1llsen flick rail - miss - and get super punished? Never because most of time he can sense what shots will hit with his flick. And because he is used to always flicking, he only does so when he can't get punished for missing. His game style changed around his style of aiming.

If you go back and forth in styles, you fuck up your game style and your aiming style.

I think you may be right in theory but in practice it doesn't really work like that.

I never felt like I had a rail style, it's just how I aim. I didn't "choose" to use my style I just came up with this way of playing because thats the one I'm comfortable with.

You could probably say the same of tox. The above is just an attempt at explaining why his way of using the rail works so well. It doesn't mean that tox himself ever made any conscious decision about those particulars.

With regard to "holding the rail" for example, you could generally say that tox seems to have kind of "his own clock". He moves and acts in a way that doesn't seem to be so much determined by what's happening around but rather by what feels natural for him.

You should be able to condition yourself.

It all depends on ability to hit shit. If you can hit the flicks and the waits (with high consistency), then you'll become the greatest railer ever. So if that is you, then forget everything I've said. However even tox misses flick rails. I've been watching his stream a lot.

I've seen him miss 4 flick rails in a row on the same guy (these weren't especially hard either). He went out of his rail style to try to hit some shit and just failed. After he went back to wait railing because that's what he can hit and is most dependable for him.

I had implemented rules for myself:
1) Miss 2 rails straight - switch to another gun.
2) Never rail up close, have a zoom fov that makes it seem like medium distance. (I hit everything in medium distance)
3) Use wait railing with crosshair 7, because now you wait until they move into the bubble instead of waiting for them to directly go over the +. It tricks your mind into not flicking the crosshair onto them.
(using the + alone when zooming in is good too, like toxjq shows)

If you are a flick railer, then by all means, keep being awesome as fuck. But these guys are hard to come by. And often times they don't have the timing to wait rail, they'd just flick onto you anyway using mini flicks.

I have a feeling wait rails don't work too well if you're aiming at someone who's directly against you and tries to dodge. Wait rails are effective for angles and railing opponents who do not directly face you in a fight.

Flick rails would be more effective against someone who's dodging in a 1v1 situation. If the guy never comes to your crosshair, you'll have to flick at one moment or the other, or you'd most likely die and/or take way too much damage. If you are not good with flick rails its just better to switch to another gun in such a situation.

But I understand that tox has probably worked up a way of making his rail more efficient in a practical, empirical manner, that would be of no surprise to me coming from him. And it's probably a good thing, considering how well he hits, but then again he hits with everything. (Minor con on the rockets tho)

Ya, but that's why you hold your rail and wait them out instead of just flicking the shot in the face to face scenario. Holding the rail a long time puts more pressure on them to dodge it, you throw off their timing, and they won't be able to simply turn and run, because when you do fire, they could fuck up a jump or hit a wall when trying to escape. It just weighs on them even more so. It puts more pressure on them.

You can see evil and cypher do this a lot. Instead of taking the rail shot they'll switch to another gun while moving in creating pressure, then back off and switch back to rail and hit the shot. Because when they switched away from rail, the enemy starts to move in a different easier pattern.

It's the mind game.

That's why you shouldn't simply flick shots or fire too quickly, it'll actually hurt you more than help you.
