It's not like it's the most played, sold, updated, rented, pre-bought game. You have to focus on most popular games, on steam alone, on 2014 alone, and you're still behind Goat Simulator.

This would be news worthy if it was top 15 over the past five years, not during a year where SC2, DotA, LoL and CS:GO was already out.

That list is completely fucked up, really. The other games and positions makes no sense whatsoever, and seems to be distributed randomly.

Almost irrelevant. All those games, and the other on the list, don't come even close to the popularity of those other AAA games i listed. And it's not like it's rocket science or anything, it's enough to watch the steam charts to have a quick example on what are the real most played games.

I mean, are we even really arguing about that? Quake live is free, and it isn't even played by a 100th of the people that plays the games on top of the list. There are hundreds of free games on the internet, and they mostly all suck.

There's a reason they're free. Nobody would play them otherwise.

They are taking two things into account : "sales" and hours played. It's not random. Of course the "sales" part is gonna get big for a free game. If you look closely, you'll notice that the hours played are lacking when compared to paid games. With the examples you chose :
