around the time i was into free & experimental jazz, i was also into space ghost coast to coast, and found out that sonny sharrock was a big part of the space ghost music. he has a really cool electric guitar style that fits with jazz. it's nothing like the jazz fusion stuff i never really got into (past the miles davis live/evil album)

i ended up really digging through last.fm for similar artists for around a year, and one of the more experimental guys i found was:

this is something you want to play in the office if you want to force somebody to confront you on your taste in music.

i found out at some point that the flying luttenbacher's song, 'de futura', was a cover of some other band, magma:

while an awesome album, it isn't really jazz, but one of their earlier albums was heavily influenced by john coltrane, and is one of the other fusiony albums that i managed to really enjoy:

the magma guys sing in an invented language, and much of it is more chanting than singing.

before i really knew much about jazz, around the time i started to learn about math rock, i was also into some nels cline:

after my jazz phase, i ended up learning a little bit about the django web framework for python. i read some about one of the founders, adrian holovaty, and he explained that the name for django came from a jazz guitarist, django reinhardt. i checked him out, and it's very cool and very early guitar jazz:

There's so many different types of jazz that can sound completely different to each other, not sure what kinda jazz u are looking for.

I always thought that Dave Brubecks' album 'Time out' is a good one to get started with. One of the first jazz albums I could really appreciate was Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. Its still beautiful to me today.

If you're looking for some more exciting stuff, try the soundtrack from Cowboy Bebop by Yoko Kanno. Especially the song 'what planet is this?' gets me so hyped. I'm typing from my phone atm but it should be on youtibe, check it out! :-)

Maybe you want to give The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble a shot - commonly classified as darkjazz. Think they pretty much got me interested in the world of jazz. That and Miles fucking Davis <3



They have some straight jazzy tracks such as Rivers of Congo


Most of the stuff is experimental and transcends the whole jazz genre a lot, but it's a good "gateway" jazz band. Highly recommended, especially Here be dragons album.

A trio with a somewhat Davisesuqe tone are The Necks - even if you despise jazz give this a try. Chemist is such a good album, again broadly transcending the jazz genre while still drawing influence from it. You need to "devour" the whole 20 min or so of their songs, skipping parts or listening in a noisy environment just won't cut it. Track become more and more interesting and layered.



Herbie Hancook, especially the stuff that was what I consider a spiritual successor to Bitches Brew (which is best album in world, all worlds), Mwandishi and Crossings. Sextant is also ok.

Bohren & the club of gore is also cool.

And finally, force yourself to listen to Miles Davis. Even if you dislike the genre, hate the blacks or have zero taste in music, Davis is the quintessential music God.

Bitches Brew, Miles in the Sky, In A Silent Way, Kind of Blue. Very good stuff. Progressive, still relevant today.




Oh and another tip before you leave for the rocky jazz road, weary traveler - most tracks need time and devotion to get into.

You can't click around the seekbar and be done with it. Shit is like reading a story, slow progression, instruments and effects being added with time, music gets noisier and noisier each minute. Listening to Davis and the likes in silence is almost like reaching the astral plane.

You have to understand jazz is pretty much a meaningless term as a genre. Jazz is a way of approaching music, not a certain kind of music. That being said, I'd recommend going through Miles Davis' discography and telling us what you liked, then it will be a lot easier to point you to other stuff you might enjoy.

All exceptional recordings made in the last 10 years in the classic combo line-up. In fact, personally I think one of the problems of modern jazz (before Black Radio came along at least) was that it was too focused on its own tradition, resulting in music that was detached from everything else that was happening.

I want it change, because I got bored with the jazz scene. The jazz scene is a certain way, but it's not this. But I think now, there's a lot of young cats coming up that are starting to be honest with themselves. And it doesn't have to be hip-hop. But just infusing things that are relevant to today's culture into jazz. We've got to make jazz a relevant music of today's culture. People listen to it and automatically think of the sixties, or the fifties, you know what I mean? But people playing the sixties weren't thinking about the twenties, you know what I mean? (Laughs) Trane wasn't always thinking about Coleman Hawkins. He was always progressing and changing and moving and trying to push the envelope. That's what the purpose of the music is. So I'm really just doing what the purpose of the music is: staying relevant and grabbing things from around me.

I agree with you. Jazz has evolved. I can find remnants of it almost anywhere.

I listened to your tracks. I quite enjoyed them, but exceptional isn't the word I'd use for them.

But let me ask you, how many Jazz releases can you note of value in the last 10 years?

This recording is genuinely my favourite of all time. If I was somehow forced to listen to one recording for the rest of my life, I would pick this without a second thought. The only downside is Pete Rock being way too high to do anything, let alone be on stage, but I can deal with that in return for the sickest modern rhythm section I have heard to this day. There was a period in my life when I listened to this every night and every night I would find something new to focus on.



Off the top of my head, other records I really enjoy are the first album of the RH factor, Voice by Hiromi, A Fable by Tigran Hamasyan, We Like It Here by Snarky Puppy and I really love the piano playing on Earfood and Ninety Miles. Are those albums as good as Kind Of Blue or A Love Supreme or Head Hunters? No, of course not, but neither are 99% of the other jazz records of that time and if that's your standard, then everything sucks.

That's a pretty sick performance. The drum solo was a total slop fest, though. But to keep things in perspective, it offers very little for me that Jazz from the 50's and earlier doesn't.

Everything does kind of suck. 99% of every genre is entirely negligible. It's the 1% of each genre that makes it all worth it. If you were to start a Jazz ensemble right now because you've listened to and enjoyed Jazz, why would your goal be to be exactly what has come before you? I'm not faulting people for wanting to create a sound they enjoy, but I just don't see a purpose to blend into a crowd.

this is going to sound pretentious as fuck, but chances are you don't get it. I don't get certain parts either, but these guys are in perfect control of their instrument. You can compare it to abstract artists. They could make perfect traditional paintings, but that bores them so they splash paint randomly. Jazz is kind of at that point I think. Personally I think that's not necessarily a good thing. And I really don't agree jazz still sounds the same way it did fifty years ago. The recordings I linked in my first reply would've made people shit themselves back then.

Do you know the story of how Herbie Hancock's electric period started? He came to the studio one day to record something with Miles Davis, but the studio didn't have an acoustic piano. The only thing they could find was a fender rhodes. So he just decided fuck it, I'm gonna play it on this thing then. That's jazz, making music in the moment with other people and by feel, not making music according to a theoretical concept or to innovate. It's just inevitable that when you music like that, you are going to innovate, but that's a by product, not the actual goal when jazz musicians come together.Or at least, that's what I've always heard the really good jazz musicans say.

I guess you're point about jazz being less innovate today than it was when it first came around is valid from a purely scholarly point of view, but idunno, I think I'd miss out on a lot if I valued music solely on how innovate it is.

I play drums, I get exactly what he's doing :P When he first starts playing over the meter he's way out of sync.

I don't agree with him saying that you need to know the rules before you throw them away. I know and understand the importance of the rules, but that doesn't escape the fact that some of the people I would consider the best songwriters never knew the rules (which I guess goes back to the first point he made about it being on an emotional level).


It's not necessarily that I base music on how innovative it is, for me it's more about how well it accomplishes what it's trying to go for. Jazz paved the way for the likes of Progressive Rock and Metal, which essentially blew Jazz out of the water in the way of technicality. When I'm craving the technical/musicianship, Metal is usually the first place I turn to. If I'm not in the mood for that and I want something more laid back, there's thousands of other options. When I feel like listening to Jazz, I'm craving a very specific sound and I'm probably going to turn towards where Jazz was the most relevant in time.

Then this is where we disagree. I don't consider jazz related to metal at all (unless you go back to the blues, but then metal did away with the blues). Jazz isn't about technical skill at all. You have to have a very high level of it to play jazz and an equally high understanding of music, but a good jazz musician isn't defined by how many notes he can play. They're not trying to impress the audience through virtuoso playing. They're just making music together and enjoying it. For me, music is about feeling and groove first, everything else second. I can definitely appreciate technical skill, but music that only tries to display that technical skill has always felt meaningless to me. I never really liked Dave Brubeck either, too white for jazz :P

Metal is related to everything (not always) because Metal can, and has (or it's really close to), incorporated everything.

I would make a point that you are differentiating between Jazz musicians and the elements involved that define Jazz music. Is a Jazz musician when he plays by himself no longer a Jazz musician? I realize I'm probably putting words in your mouth, but it's a valid point.

What set Jazz apart for its era was that it challenged the mind by its technicality. Technicality also doesn't necessarily mean how MANY notes they can hit, but which notes, and when/where they hit them. I never mentioned Technical as skill. I can show you J-pop songs that are technical, but even beginner musicians could probably play them.

I'm a (amateur) musician too, so I know this. I was exaggerating/simplifying to put my point across.

I would say a jazz musician by himself isn't making jazz music actually. I consider the interplay an integral part of the music and it's the main appeal for me. I think you can agree that is hard to find in other music, the whole tight but loose thing, structured but free, etc etc.

We can really put this whole chain to rest just by saying we listen to jazz for very different reason. Your reasons make the current music irrelevant, mine don't.

There is no fun in that...

Stuff like "That's jazz, making music in the moment with other people and by feel, not making music according to a theoretical concept or to innovate." and some other stuff in the same tone leading to you making the point that Jazz is solely a relationship between musicians and their instruments. Those are qualities that you're attributing to the music that are not in the music. If someone were to find a recording of these sessions isolated from anything else, they would never be able to conclude that there was emotional interplay between the players.

That's the whole reason why I stated earlier that "jazz" is meaningless as a genre. The term has nothing to do with the music itself. Sure, 90% of what is called jazz consists of music that does share certain things like song structure, rhythm, certain scales, ways of playing harmony and so on, but that's not the important part, it's not what defines it. From the very beginning it distinguished itself in attitude from classical and European folk.

Suppose someone played a coltrane recording note for note. I would be extremely impressed and I would enjoy it, but I wouldn't call it jazz, because the improvisation isn't there.
