Walljumping in ProjectRIK is very different to Warsow. From personal experience I would say it's a lot harder too. Also walljumping can be disabled in map design and there can be different rankings list for maps done with mapper's choice of physics. Same thing with pretty much every aspect of the physics.

Looks good, noticed that it might have autojump which honestly people will flame me for saying this, but for a defrag game that's a good thing. It only makes sense in q3df that there is no autojump because you keep your acceleration when doing 10 frame jumps and what not and besides who wants to end up with thumb pain after a few hours of non-stop and honestly if you want to introduce new players to the defragging genre then you want to give them something easy to work with since the rest of it will be a stone wall for the first week or so.

I have to clarify the autojump a little. The autojump is for stairs, ramps, and doublejumps. As long as you haven't started falling yet, you can autojump the higher step. For flat ground you still need to press jump manually. This eliminates luck-dependency on high speeds, but still has the players doing the work for most part.

It will have corresponding weapons to rockets and plasma, and a couple others that are in the works.

Bummer, really got used to the laidbackness of full autojump (warsow).

Gameplay is being constantly planned for the best pleasure of gaming. Full autojump doesn't exist currently, but there has been discussion about implementing it. We want to make the game enjoyable for everyone no matter what game they come from, and we aren't crossing any idea out for good. There's much work to be done before public release, but there's a chance of the autojump coming in if it doesn't affect original gameplay for the worse.

We tried out the full autojump for a while, but I think we'll end up staying with our partial one.

For a serious lack of better words we mostly agree that it makes it a bit less "enjoyable" when it fully automatic. Arcaon said it best with some "psychology" based arguments as to how it's "enjoyable" to see a reaction to your actual key presses, as opposed to simply holding a key down (or toggling it on or off).

Q3 maps support? If not -realistically- the game would be pretty much pointless.

Q3 maps have been ported to in like 5 other games with trickjumping possibilities. We want new maps. Also, Q3 maps wouldn't really be that balanced for ProjectRIK, and there's certain issues with quality of the maps.

RIK comes with level editor that is easy to use. Click one button to publish your map after testing it. All maps go through inspection and users will be given feedback if there's some important issue with gameplay to be fixed.

I say it'd be pretty much pointless because this game doesn't look like it will have a following big enough to start making enough and great maps, with the sheer amount of them being one of the best aspects of defrag and similar others.

On the contrary, the game already has bigger following than we expected. We are rather surprised how well the game is being taken by players. Positive feedback and comments from several forums are way beoynd our expectation and I haven't seen hardly any negative comment thus far. That should tell us a little how big following the game might have in the future.

It takes approximately one hour to make a decent map. One map can be used for several gamemodes and bring many hours of playing. Ten players wasting few hours every now and then would already be enough to keep the game active. Our mapping crew alone has more than five people producing maps.

Every game is dependant on the players activity. I trust there's many capable level designers from other games who are interested to make maps for this. Also like previously mentioned, making maps for this is very easy and we gladly teach basics to people that show interest.

Point of games is to have fun. This looks fun to me and, apparently, lots o f others in this thread.

Can't have that much long lasting fun in a game like this with very few quality maps.

Before you and others say I'm a hater and whatnot, you have to understand that if the game is very simplistic, as in not having a storyline, cutscenes or is only about jumping around, then the sheer amount of maps is crucial in fun had.

If the game is the same as shown in the trailer (nothing more than the shown gameplay) and it comes with 30 maps, all of which only last some seconds to complete, then the game serves no purpose.

The modding / map making community will likely be strong. I'm already working on a map and from what i know so are several others who are not part of the ProjectRIK Team. So maybe initially it might have too few maps, but i would expect that to grow drastically.

Will probably have over 100 run maps on release. Currently we have about 50 or so.

As for the rest, read around at comments, a lot of different gametypes and alike giving the game more all round "gameplay value" as well as multiple "run gametypes" for run maps, increasing each maps gameplay time as well.

It doesn't directly support Q3 maps as of current. However, I managed to easily convert one of my maps from ET. It wasnt perfect but it was good enough for me to then update and work on.

If it has competitive racing with nice 'tracks' it might be fun. I'm not very into free style defrag or solo challenge maps. I do that a little in Quake games but there's no way I'd be interested in a whole game built around that.

The main gametype of the game is to run for the fastest time in various tracks which will have top rankings. Single player will be mainly for the purposes of learning to play the game. There will be other gametypes as well, including CTF and some sort of a catch/tag mode. There are team-based gametypes too (like ctf) where you can defend by e.g. blocking enemy players/routes. None of the gametypes involve killing players, gameplay will always be focused entirely on player movement.

Why do we need a successor? There is still tons of things that the best defraggers haven't even thought of in the maps they play. Otherwise, they wouldn't keep making new videos showing us cool new stuff! :D

I think these can coexist side-by-side and that players from defrag could easily play both.

Sorry for that. The video was more like a sneak peek for people to let know something is coming. When the game will be released for public, there will be more thorough explanation about all the new features.

Looks like a really good idea. I like the game's aesthetic and like the idea of team-mode gametypes. The appeal for me of defrag and movement-practice in general is that I can apply it to more complex situations, although some people enjoy it on its own.

It is somewhat possible already, but actual surf-mode that doesn't allow normal strafing doesn't exist yet. I'll bring this up. Personally I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be implemented.

awesome! there's a particular balance though. The best surf comes from being agile in the air but really suttle/smooth movements and connections on surfaces.

It's essentially only strafing. It's all law of conservation. Some people understand that and get good really fast, others don't. The difficulty comes from precision; being able to connect to the surface as smoothly as possible. It also comes from knowing when to go high or low.

Defrag development has totally stalled, and although Reflex may have a speedrun mode planned it lacks a few physics features (corner clipping, to name one of the simplest and least understandable omissions).

ProjectRIK appears to be a viable solution, though there are some 'features' which seem harmful.

Halfjump is a poor idea, it removes an incentive for players and mappers to care about jump phase.
A map section scaled poorly to the physics would require a halfjump, and a route or movement mistake could be cheaply corrected with one.

The inclusion of both halfjump and walljump suggests that you might have two jump-like functions needing a keybind each. Please don't.
This requirement kept me from enjoying warsow.
The rhythm of a single jump action on a single key is very relaxing, while staggering through a poorly scaled path with a separate cripplejump is unaesthetic and awkward (as well as skill-devaluing, as noted above).

Generic movement-modifier functions/binds - as you might be using for ramp run and halfbeat/airturn - are similarly flawed.
It is far better to achieve the resulting movement through complex application of simple move/jump/attack inputs than it is to press yet-another-sprintkey.

Crouchsliding can be fun, as long as there is no weird timing requirement as in Quake4 and CPMA:CQ3.
Any negative z-velocity should be enough to induce a ground slide.
Increasing slide time for greater fall speed is an option, though a linear relationship is undesirable.

As mentioned by others, care taken in the design of your turn function can result in surfing behavior on sufficiently angled slopes.
This would expand the possible maps and routes a lot for very little cost.

Q3 Defrag CPM has some interesting weapon behavior called gazboosts or groundboosts, whereby knockback which pushes the player into the ground results in a very short time of frictionless high-acceleration ground movement.
Not everyone is a fan, but I find it very rewarding when combined with other movement features such as edgeclipping and ramp jumping.

You say that walljumping can be disabled by the mapper, and elsewhere you say something about enabling or disabling physics features in different modes.
Take a lesson from previous games and don't do this.
One consistent physical ruleset is enough challenge for any player, and you risk mapper incompetence and the fracturing of casual and competitive playerbases by allowing piecemeal adoption of what should be a consistent standard.

You only have one jump button. The halfjumps and walljumps are enabled by using a special/modifier key, by default the right mouse button.
This also enables most of the other tricks in combination with other keys.

Haven't played either one of those, but no, there's no weird timing requirements for crouchsliding. It's one of the easier tricks to do, simple and straight forward.
I did experiment with some increased slide times along those lines, but it didn't feel quite right.

Already implemented. It's great fun, and as you say, allows for a lot of new possibilities.

I'm aware. Groundboost and such is not going to happen in RIK. There's plenty of other new and interesting things you can do :)

We could have been a bit more clear here, but we hadn't quite decided every detail on this point amongst ourselves yet either.

It is possible to disable pretty much any aspect of the players physics with map entities. This feature was created for the singleplayer/tutorial modes, which I'm sure you can see the reason for.

And I agree with you, having a bunch of maps that disable this and that for no particular reason isn't a good idea.
So, any run/race maps with a timer, will ignore these entities and run full fledged RIK physics.

But mappers will also be allowed to create more "particular" maps which disable specific tricks either all the time of just for specific parts. Mostly as a fun or challenge type of thing.

I agree that less buttons to press is better and the interaction with walls flagged for walljumps should be done with the regular jumpkey. I don't see why it has to be a seperate button anyway (is that stated anywhere?).

It uses a modifier key for wall jumps (default is right mouse). You hold the right mouse button and press the jump key. The reason for it needing either a different key or modifier is purely for detection and convenience.

You wouldn't want to be doing a super fast run clipping round close to the corners press the jump button to go up a step or something and have it wall jump you into oblivion.

i always thought the idea of an fps type/mario kart combat type hybrid could be a really fun and kind of unique game. I'd really like to see someone try it.

I'm close with the developers of Rik. The code used is all new and not copied from anything previous. There are mechanics that are new to this game including some of the planned / in progress weapon options.

With regards to the lack of innovation, lots of people have tried doing similar things in other engines it just doesnt work well. The underlying basis of this game is the same as others but the mechanics and implementation are better IMO. There is innovation in this game but at the end of the day it is a trick jumping game and if it didnt have the same features as others it wouldnt be categorised as such and no one would play it. So sure you see lots you have seen before but there is innovation.

I get what you mean, but really this is just reskinned Defrag isn't it? the same physics are there, with a smattering of other Quake derived games movement mechanics.

it kind of follows the trend among all these games that we are seeing crop up lately - clones (with a borrowed feature here or there) with a graphical revamp. the code might be new, but the concepts are ancient.

i look forward to seeing the weapon stuff as that implies some sort of mariokart like gameplay but the vid on the website featured shooting boxes as checkpoints. not exactly super exciting stuff is it?

Halfjump: ca half the jump height of a normal jump

Sloperunning: See the video, like running upwards a slope/long ramp, instead of jumping on it multiple times. With a height boost as you "release" the sloperun (jump after it).

Weapon races, yes, definitely.
Leader boards, yes, online, live records, etc.
Demos, yes, serverside and playerside recording possible.
Fancy demo playback features and such in the works.

Currently there is none, but I will probably add a simple one with a "aim at the left or the right of this line to gain speed" type of approach. Mainly to help new people learn, but also to keep some defraggers a little bit more happy.

On a side note, snaphud etc isn't relevant seeing as there's no such snapping in RIK.

On the note of the Cgaz hud: Don't do a racesow. Racesow is the most boring racing experience I've played because the weapons sucked and the strafing was mostly just about routing because you had this Racehud that basically told you exactly where to point your cursor for the best speed. It basically just became a game of who can point their mouse in relation to what their HUD was telling them the best. The Cgaz hud in Quake 3 is not accurate as to where you should be pointing your cursor, but it gives you a good idea of where to be pointing it.

A Cgaz style hud would be nice but nothing overly complicated looking like Q3's Cgaz hud (Do we even need NESW indicators?)

Whats new except for including more physics behaviour? Any rewards for style? Anything that make multiplayer viable, race with checkpoints, relay races, knockouts?

The stuff you see in the video is largely "defrag-ish", yes. As you said, it has additional movement capabilities. But also with a lot of improvements and so on and so forth which makes the experience as a whole far more enjoyable, which in itself isn't irrelevant in my opinion.

Aside from that, I guess the video could have expanded more on this subject, but I was planning on putting more of the ""unique" new stuff" so to say, into the next preview.
But it does still say "multiple run gametypes that are all per-player selectable, and also team based gametypes" at the end of the video. Which is a bit vague. But in any case, defrag doesn't have that.

The team based ones are naturally multiplayer and actually makes teams/clans relevant in the trickjumping scene as well. A lot more info on that will come later.. Would rather present it properly later on as opposed to sketching out some quick basics and current thinking right here and now, but there's been some specific mentions in the comments I believe. (ctf, catch/tag as non-run related team based ones).

That being said, we're also open to adding other gametypes which could be fun..
Relay has already been planned. Knockout I haven't given any thought yet, but it could be interesting. Got any more ideas?
And what exactly do you mean with rewards for "style"? Like automatic awarding of "points" while doing freestyle? (because that's planned well)

Yeah but nobody really cares what you want. Nobody calls all of those games Call of Duty or whatever clone, they're a type of a game. Just because Quake is different from them doesn't mean it deserves to cast any more of a shadow on its type of games than it already does.

Something similar to that will be implemented, but you can't use it in competitive modes as it's meant only for practicing to strafe instead of helping already good strafers to reach perfect angle in every situation.

The game itself is free, says so a few times in the comments and in the actual post as well.. :) To be very clear, it's both free to download and free to play. Access will be given in the form of a direct download from projectrik.com when that time comes.

But the servers are naturally still something that isn't free (for us that is, the players themselves won't be charged), but contributions towards the cost of them is very welcome. Wasn't planning on opening up for donations yet, but there's been a couple requests so I figured what's the harm.

No, not the first time around at least. Mainly for security reasons, since the main point of the game is setting times/records. Having those stream from servers we have no control over offers up quite a few possibilities for abuse.

Although releasing a slight modified server edition so people can set up their own non-race servers is a strong possibility a bit down the line. (e.g. CTF servers). But then again we might run some scores\stats from those servers as well, in which case the same issues apply..

I see. This is fair. But that raises some questions in my mind. You don't have to answer them, of course. But here's what I'm thinking :
Why don't you only consider stats coming from trusted servers as valid? Like how QL does. If it's because you don't want the community to start thinking of runs made on "private" server as valid, fair enough. If it's because your infrastructure doesn't have a concept of "trusted" server and accept whatever stats is thrown at it... yeah it's probably a good idea not to let anyone gets its hands on the server bins. Just make sure you leave no clue anywhere publicly; you know what they say about security through obscurity. Anyway, good luck with this project again.

It's not about security through obscurity. It's about the fact that naturally a lot of the .. call it "anti-cheat" / etc kind of stuff is done on the actual server, not to mention the physics calculations. If people run their own servers with released server binaries, we no longer have that "security". Even a tiny little change serverside could give an advantage, and possibly also be problematic to detect.

I've thought about the trusted/non-trusted concept, but I don't like it. In my opinion it could result in splitting the community, e.g. between multiple record databases, which is something I don't want. There's so much of that in the quake\trickjump world already: one website here for that, another website for that, then you gotta go there in order to do that, etc.
Being a standalone game I'd much rather have everything gathered at one place. Hope that makes sense.

Basically the MP Server situation hasn't 100% been decided by Dinius. Releasing the server files is definitely possible. The bit that is still being decided on is how to manage it all with run times and stuff from other servers / community. So yeah, MP Servers currently work, theres just logistics to think about rather than the actual code ;).

automatically uploading the record holding demos or movies to youtube could make a little bit. MrHollyDriv3r has 650k views and 99% of his videos are just defrag demos with a couple movies mixed in. $1-3 average per 1000 views.

it'd also be cool if there was a twitch stream like QLranks, just showing record times 24/7. obviously this wouldn't work unless there a couple thousand maps though. i did the math and you'd make like $45 a month showing 3 ads an hour to 10 viewers on average after adblock. that's enough for a couple servers.

Thought about some simple stuff like skins for monetizing. Nothing that affects gameplay and such though, only superficial stuff along those lines.
