It could have been good at the time it came out, since there weren't many science fiction movies at the times, but it really is a mediocre film: the atmosphere from the first one is completely gone, the characters are ridicolous and over the top, the classic self-destructing crazy meathead hollywood marines, they look and sound like a caricature.
But do they at least shoot those motherfucking aliens? Nope, they can't because of some silly excuse, thus negating the film's main strenght point, the "this time, it's war" premise to the second chapter of the saga.
And the few times you finally see someone shooting an alien, the aliens are completely fucked up with three bullets.

"Aliens" completely kills the imaginary developed in the first, classic film, the strong, lonely, smart and cautious stalker, completely self sufficinent and almost unbeatable, making them just mindless and frail hive drones, quantity over quality.
Also the queen, completely a Cameron idea, contradicts the concept of the first film; there is a cut sequence in wich it's shown that the original alien lays eggs in the Nostromo.

Not to mention all the other smaller details, like Ripley.... sellotaping together a machine gun and a flamethrower what-the-fuck-shit-is-retarded-but-gangsta, Ripley becoming emotionally attached to a child she just randomly found around, Ripley randomly causing the Queen's anger burning the eggs when she had absolutely no reason to, since a nuke was about to toast everything and she wasn't even on the spaceship yet, or the queen... correctly using an elevator.

Fully agreed with you there, Alien is a great, actually disturbing horror movie, which is a rare thing indeed. Aliens is a cheesy and generic action flick, The Dirty Dozen in space, with Xenomorphs instead of Nazis.

Also, the Alien queen looked stupid, it was designed by James Cameron instead of Giger, after all. And the idea of the Aliens as biological weapons of the Space Jockey's race, that ultimately turned on their creators, was so much cooler than that they were just big hive insects

I pre-ordered it for the Xbox One and it arrived today, 3 days early! Went with the Nostromo Edition that has the extra content from the original Alien film.

The day after pre-ordering the reviews came out (typical) and the majority seem to be quite positive with a metascore of 79. Gamespot and IGN seem to be the worst reviews so fuck them.
Anywya I'll give it blast in a bit and see how it is.

Played a demo of it at this years GamesCom in Cologne. Wasn't too impressed tbh. Just didn't feel scary to me.
About A.I. running into walls and what not, the alien didn't behave too dumb at all, never saw it bumping into anything or taking weird walk-patterns or anything like that.
It did however behave differently with every try I had in the demo-level.

The most faithful alien game yet! Only played a couple of hours so far but it does keep you on the edge of your seat even though nothings really happeend yet, which is a feat in intself.
The game wolrd looks amazing and it's as if your on the set of the original movie which is what I was wanting most out of the experience.

My advice would be to watch some before you buy because it looks a lot less appealing to me now.

Just watched some random guy on twitch for a few minutes (won't watch any more, don't wanna spoil it) and it looked great but I've seen a lot of reviewers complained about too much backtracking, lever pulling and scripted events pushing your progress back just as you're about to escape. Basically they say it's amazing for the first hour and then it gets tedious.

I just happened to have watched Prometheus this week and looked up some info. It was originally planned to be a prequel, but they instead opted to make it a standalone movie with references to Alien (1979). It's rumoured Prometheus 2 will be tying Prometheus to Alien, but I'm not sure if it's in production already. It's also going to be based on the next "adventure" of Shaw on the Engineer home planet. All rumours.

The director, Scott, recently sayd that there won't be xenomorphs in Prometheus 2. At all. Surprise surprise.

But it's irrelevant what he says anyway, because before the film release Prometheus was overhyped to be Alien's prequel, while after the release they tried to backtrack pretending it was a different universe altogether.

I wonder what they'll say as damage-control after Prometheus 2 will be even more retarded than the first one. "I didn't direct it, i was only helping"

The only good thing about that movie was nice visuals.
The list of everything else that was wrong with that movie is simply too long to get into (and too depressing).

And the great sense of mystery. The experience of watching Prometheus for the first time in a theatre was great. I haven't felt this sense of mystery and wonder in any movie in a long time. Too bad there are so many things wrong with it, it could've been great film but they fucked it up.

You pretty much play this game by trial and error, but I'm still loving it. The lighting and smoke etc are superb, wait until you get to the medical bay bit!

The nostromo edition was a bit a bit of a con, luckily I got it for £35 anyway. But the RRP was £50 whereas normal game £45 (on xbone/ps4) and the nostromo edition was sold as pre-order exclusive however they are selling it as DLC for £2.79!

That game was pretty damn scary in the beginning. Walking around the station with the marines, hacking doors and looking around expecting a threat. I remember unloading half a magazine into the broken pipe. The stupid jump scare got me good on my first playthrough. But once I finally saw the alien and killed it, all the fear disappeared and it was pretty much Doom from that point. It had a few really cool moments tho, like when you're running away from the swarm of xenos after trying to rescue the chick.

Alien 3 is SHIT.

Big part of the impact of Alien/Aliens to me was the decor and the set. 3 completely fucked the amazing artstyle of the alien series and replaced it wank things that don't fit the alien lore.

The decor is shit. We go descend from high tek gizmos in claustrophobic spaceship to overly large brownish halls where they try to swing the damn thing with baseball bats and fireaxes and shit. The fuck is this, stoneage? The setting has no alien atmosphere nor they pay proper attention to things like lighting.

The characters look like shit, on top of which they are dumb as fuck. The whole brotherhood is retarded. Dutton's character has two words in his vocabulary: fuck and motherfucker. The testosterone-filled marines in the two prequels at least fit the bill and contributed to the combat. The cast in ALien3 remind me of the riff raff aboriginals in Waterworld, only more unintentionally comedic.

The action sequences are unintentionally comedic. The alien looks like shit, towards the end they just use dated CGI construction. Most scenes it chases screaming brotherhood members. Insert Benny Hill music. Along the way you'll find yourself cheering for the alien since brotherhood are bunch of cunts. Only good thing about the entire film is the alien's pov, which is better in theory than in practise.

On top of everything, even the sound atmosphere is fucked up. The music is too action movielike and bland and there aren't enough ambiance.

To comment the story... The whole movie could start at 1:45. They build up rather weak romantic connection between the timid Doctor and ripley. The second thread is the intra-group conflict of the brotherhood due to the addition of a female specimen. They wander around these junkyards of storytelling and then switch to a something distantly alienlike with no payoffs. The ending is weaker than in 2 prequels and even the supposedly blunt ending to the series comes cheesy as fuck.

Alien:Resurrection is a flawed movie, but at least it gives something of an audio-visual experience.
