Seeing my initiative to create a community based portal for quake4 didnt got much attention, i got another idea for achieving the same goal in a different way.
id could integrate in a not distant future a quake4 option in quakelive. And maybe in the future, if it ever becomes released, quake5??? You utilize the same friends, chat, portal etc that you have running.
Actually, they could add a sudoku game inside QL for when people need to kill some time waiting for other players... Having tetris, solitaire and minsweeper would be awesome too!
A maze-like game where you start with 100-0 stack and during the way you pick up health and armors and complete the level by picking up the megahealth.
There should be a leaderboard for fastest maze times and game should be called 'Get the Mega, Tony!'
The mini-games will save QL, you'll see! Millions of players will come back to Quake, all issues will be fixed and QL will finally be rid of cheaters and lags.
I'd be happy to just see them start dropping Q4 assets into QL. Q3 balance, Q4 visuals.
And then they could have rulesets for each quake game. Q3 would be the ranked settings hosted by ID servers, and then there could be Q4 rulesets with Q4 balance and crouchsliding and stuff, same for Q2 and Q1, all using Q4 visuals.
Its a giant quake portal. No more will Quake Live be simply another version of Q3, it will become the modern home of all quakes.
Wanna play some Q2 CTF? Boom, log into QL, spawn a ctf server with a Q2 ruleset. Wanna play some Q1 duel? Well snap crackle and pop my nigga. Log into QL and spawn a duel server with a Q1 ruelset.
The entire game would look like Q4.
I got carried away but this idea would be top dollar
To sum up:
- entire game looks like q4
- q3 ruleset is default and ranked
- q1, q2 and q4 rulesets are all options you can set when spawning a server (crouchsliding, air control, hooks, all that shit included in the appropriate rulset and gamemode)
I like the idea, but I fear that there are not enough quake 1/2/4 players who do not already play quake live. That investment would most likely not pay off for id, and nowadays it is all about generating money, so yea.
Peoples major complaint about QL is that it is restricting features that Q3 offered and then charging you for them. I bet it would look a lot better if QL offered a Q1,2,3 and 4 experience all in one f2p game.
No kidding, Q3 graphics is actually an upgrade over the Quake 4 ones. The only thing it could still receive is perhaps higher poly character / weapon meshes & particle effects.
Quake 4 had :
- Horrible lighting model / shadows
- Characters not matching the hitboxes
- The engine itself was poorly optimized.
Thought about that option but i dont think going back to q1 and q2 would have enough ROI as their communities are really small and their appeal for new players low mainly due to gfx.
Nah, jump-pad nades were not really awesome. It made it practically impossible to throw nade in the pad areas of a lower floor if the pad was using a tunnel type exit.
I can't count the amount of time where I needed some nades at a specific location and couldn't because they were always catching the damn jump pad collision box and end up bouncing.
Also those jumppad grenades were completely useless, since it's always better to just shoot a rocket.
I think all those gimmicks were great for Q4 and their specific games, but don't suit Q3 and other games in general. Reason is the whole game has to be made keeping them in mind, including balance, map design and so on. Sadly, that includes my favorite uncommon gimmick: keeping vertical momentum when exiting teleports, painkiller-like.
Plus we already know adding stuff for the sake of adding them just doesn't work well, ultimately making the game shallower and not well designed. The prime example is warsow.
