In a way, Zhu is right though.

Haven't seen the movie but I've read a very interesting article that shits on the movie for its stupid length (formal) and the fact that the principal character turns out to be a hero more than a anti-hero, which is sad.

I also heard that Jordan Belfort (the real one) is going to earn money from this movie.

In other words, it could've been a cynical way to describe a scumbag, but it failed if that was the intent.

I don't know why I've pointed out of this article the fact that it criticises its length, maybe because it is intricated with its argument that it turns the character into a hero more than an anti-hero because of it. I don't mind when a movie is long especially if I'm enjoying myself watching it.

When I see a movie like Batman: The Dark Knight I'm happy to see the movie isn't a mere 88 minutes long. It could last 5 hours for all I care :).

That's a common debate with gangster films whether they glorify gangster life or not. But I look at it this way: Scorsese shows us a perfect mirror. This is the world we live in. Here's this scumbag, he cheats, has the time of his life and doesn't even get punished for it. He can no longer enjoy the luxury, but can still lead a decent life after getting caught. Fuck fairy tales. Life is not fair. Sometimes the bad guys get away with it. Scorsese shows this disillusion perfectly. This movie has a lot in common with GoodFellas. Same structure, same ending. Only Wolf of Wall Street takes the luxury to a whole other level. More money, more hookers, more coke. By this, he is telling us that the real gangsters are not those who get their hands bloody, not those out on the streets, but those guys in suits in Wall Street. They are the ultimate bad guys, and we need to know it.

lol any movie that takes a bad thing and focuses on it to the whole extent will most likely generate mixed feelings to the viewer. in Wolf's case: a weird sort of appalling admiration at the same time you know everything that's happening is horrifying. and that's what makes the movie so awesome. I wouldn't call it a serious movie, by any means. :D
