I enjoy the faceit cup for the talented players, production and the commentary. For a stream to keep my interest it requires at least one of these elements.

When i see new maps beeing played by highly ranked players i watch.

Otherwise i fall asleep very fast now when i watch QL streams :(

I'm watching tons of Sc2 streams tho and they are always more entertaining sadly.

is the issue the game or the streamers? are you watching sc2 because there are better quality streamers or because QL isn't as exciting for you?

I guess Sc2 is more relaxing and entertaining to watch. Casters are excellent and the production is good. I prefer 10 times playing QL than Sc2 but i prefer to watch sc2 streams over QL streams nowadays.

Mainly because QL streams is too often the same thing over and over and over again... same maps (hello ztn aero dm13) same players same winers. Plus the casters be it Zoot or ddk they both looks exhausted. And they are the top of what QL cast has to offer right now in the active casters. Some are much worse tho, when you hear stermy casting it's like a depressed man is talking :/ nothing exciting realy. When you hear that you just close the stream, i know it can look bad or unpolit to some saying this about stermy but i guess no cast would be better than depressed cast. My 2 cents.

So to sum up it's both the streamers and the content that is not exciting. I used to watch Zotac cups, i had some fun with it. I guess im bored of QL streams.

you're mostly talking about tournament streams correct? you mention casters a lot

this is more for personal streaming, like when one player streams at home like idra or LoL players. do you think differently in that case?

- Interesting or pro or passionate or entertaining caster/guest casters (don't need to be all of them, 2gd is probably the closest to that though)
- Never seen this live, but POV would be quite interesting to see. Where the dueller attempts to explain his actions throughout(very tricky, as some people would probably expect to much detail for such a fast changing game)

I can barely watch a whole map due to QL's easiness vs the good ole OSP days

The fluid motion Quake represents. Never get tired of it.

I totally agree on this one, I find nothing (esport of other) with this "fluid motion" notion you speak of. So when a master like Cypher flows around the map owning everything its a beauty to watch.

Its also the main reason I never stopped playing quake for too long since quake 1. No other game feels so smooth / fluid. Its just a good sensation to play the game no matter the game mode / result of the match when you know how to move properly. Its like skiing

why do I keep watching quake streams ? good question.

For example I stopped watching SC2 mainly because you can too easily guess the outcome of the game after a good move by a player. A zergling good zergling run-by and its over. Its 99% of the time a good guess when you feel its GG. And then its just watching the guy painfully trying to come back and loosing. That plus the horrible 3 to 5 first minutes where almost nothing happens. Quake is head-on action from the first second.

The number 1 thing which makes Quake competition AWESOME is the suspens. The comebacks. The overtimes. The clutch rails. Its very very rarely quickly decided. Even if its a less prestigious set up (it hasn't to be K1llsen vs Rapha to be a good game).

Second would be, of course, the scene in a general sense. The legends we all know and love and the rising players still investing some time in an attempt to be the best at Quake. After a moment of non-stream I like to see if Cooller is still capable of his awesome sneaky plasma plays and "unmoving dodges", if Cypher is still capable of dealing 250 dmg just on his way to a yellow armor, etc. Therefore its always a disapointement to see a really good player stop the game (Av3k, Strenx). I guess I understand them because they've been playing for so long but iits always bugging.

I don't really have any problem with the casters, yes they seem worn out but I still like Zoot, Ins (although I'd like Ins to get a new mic), and Ddk. I really appreciate it when there's a co caster on face it because its less "robot mode". Twister has improved his casing a lot while still being personnal and not in automatic mode.

Good post. I'd say everything you said about why I watch quake + I like occasional chat fun. Sc2 is a bore inded.
One major problem with Quake though - lack of new high-level players, but considering the overall skilled quake scene it's understandable - I'd say main issues are no $$$ motivation to train, and the game being hard to improve, especially if you don't find yourself in irc or have few somewhat skilled ql friends who are eager to help.

Casters, who are not 100% serious at times, thus provide some lols.

I think the old cups for TDM/CTF were more interesting - especially, nationcups, when the scene was at it's peak of standard.

Rage, Trolling, Flaming, Whine... in short: E-Drama - everything, that makes the quake scene so entertaining, rich and flourishing; and not being embarrassed about it like pedophiles, like those uptight Starcraft wimps.

#1 for me is watching uber skilled players do their magic, chat for sharing and feeling part of the community, also learning new angles and jumps and routes in maps i still dont fully know. Also ive realized theres some kind of unconscious programming while im watching top players in the sense that the following matches i play on that day, i move more efficiently and hit a bit more than on a normal day.

In order:

+ On the ESR side bar. That is a must.
+ Sitting on the PC doing nothing.
+ Cooller or CLG, in each case. Names matter
+ LANs, events, special occasions, different
+ A good show in itself, but can't know that before watching. Evo streams come to mind
+ Chat
+ Good casters

The last two don't matter as much as the others. I'd still watch a cooller game if it was casted by ins and fishstix and no chat, that is if the stream is in the side bar. At the same time for me the most memorable part of quakecon was the russian stream when they played brutal doom mid-break (what wad, map pack was that?).

On the minus side:
- Everything is bound to get boring as it gets repetitive. I don't watch faceit unless the stated third reason. The same will with 125fps and zootlive unless the structure changes
- No casting

I see a lot of replies mentioning "retarded chat" as something positive and this has been my theory for years now.

People don't want to come on chat to discuss serious topics, we're there to have fun, forget about our problems, mock each other, mock ourselves, post inane baits, CoD flame wars, third world country degrading, spiced up with mild racism and misogyny, it's what brings us together to the same level and what people actually enjoy and come back to.

This is why I never take action and ban people for having different opinions, posting edgy comments or just blatantly trying to provoke a verbal conflict, all in good taste of course.

Meanwhile, I join the faceit stream and instantly see about ~5 or 6 people getting temp ban or just <mensaje eliminado>. .

To discourage or prevent what? People actually "discussing"?
And it's really unfair not to whitelist esreality links, since we promote their events and always make sure the threads are pinned, the collaboration should be mutual.

So I'm going with another vote for chat retardation, interesting matches (not the same 3 ruskies camping on ZTN), high level of play, drama factor and casters.

There is no added value in crap like that. Different opinions are nice and debates are good. But as soon as your only goal is to mock / flame / insult (/etc.) other people then you should be committed to an institution to be forced to accept help.

stream quality and analytic casting. while quality/config is a matter of taste to some degree I think the latter is very much needed for proper Quake coverage.

What makes me watch a qlive stream would be Joe Miller and 2GD casting, there could be a potatoe and a carrot playing and still be interesting to hear them cast.

Tho now Joe Miller casts for LoL and 2GD casts Dota2 :o would be fun to get them back once again :)

I used to watch streams to get better in duel.

tbh i have recently completely stopped. Main reason that the sound levels setups are just ruining the enjoyment of the game. I check to see now and then if smth has changed ( if caster volumes are lower in relation to ingame sound), but that’s about it.
