some admins believe that he doesn't deserve to be a regular user, and though i disagree with them, and have argued against it, it's just the way things have to be. i'm not in a position to upset people who contribute a lot to the site over such a topic as one controversial user. i did argue for him to be removed from probation before, and he was a regular user for months without issues. i do feel as though probation without confrontation was not the proper choice, but at the same time i respect the decision and understand the motivation behind it.

zhu has been placed on probation twice that i know of, once for an extended period of time. when he was removed from probation the first time, his behavior was a lot less abusive and spammy, and he managed to maintain regular user status for months. i believe he redeemed himself in multiple ways, and showed himself to be worthy of being a regular user. as a regular user, i think he deserved some respect or decency from admins, and should have been warned or talked to regarding problematic posts as any other regular user would have been. the post that served as catalyst for his probation wasn't abusive or anything, it was just a bit vulgar (which i don't have a problem with, but site guidelines cover it pretty definitively).

i have had some conversations with zhu, and each time i pointed out that something was inappropriate, he was willing to consider it, have a thoughtful conversation with me, and often address it. i don't need zhu to change his personality, but it's true that some things are just inappropriate for esr, regardless of who the user is. i just feel differently from some admins, in that i believe it's possible to reach an understanding with people through maintained relationships with positive goals.

from talking with zhu, his opinion is that he would rather be banned than on probation, because probation is just prolonged torture. i agree with him, but it's not the reason i chose to ban him, though it did help me to decide that banning him is acceptable. the reason i felt that a ban is appropriate is because he has been on probation multiple times and hasn't appeased those admins who scrutinize his behavior and allow their observations to support their perspectives and opinions. i also argued that raythenoob should be banned rather than on probation for similar reasons. it's more work to approve and disapprove some users' posts than it is to just nuke the occasional excessive post and message them to respectfully ask to be more considerate in the future.

if the admins really feel that zhu is not somebody they can reach through conversation, and feel as though it's okay to treat him without respect that any regular user deserves, then what's the point of having him on probation at all? it's just creating more work and wasting more energy on somebody that they don't want to participate on the site. they're basically banning him but without having to deal the final blow. i'm willing to deal the final blow, because i'd rather give somebody the respect of finality than the disrespect of being swept into a corner and forced to ask permission to do or say anything.

I would not have probated or banned him, contrary to belief I don't hate ZHU or wish him harm he's annoying but not nasty (people like us just push each other and get more and more extreme anything I say to ZHU goes in and out, just like him me people on the outside don't always get that ), its too bad you don't have a more advanced banning system so maybe you can keep him to posting journos or something where his character is better suited. Cos he is a character if nothing else.

I don't agree with this reasoning. There are some users on ESR that have attained a sort of entertainer status, you could say. People you know exactly what you get out of when you enter their threads and read their posts. Even though they are, objectively speaking, non-constructive or even detrimental depending on the interpretation, they still add to the charm and overall atmosphere of this site. I believe Zhu has reached such status. Banning him permanently removes a quantity of entertainment derived from being a part of the overall ESR experience, for those of us that did not put him on ignore, that is.

Let's face it, websites like ESR are a dying breed. Most other places are heavily moderated faux-utopias with malleable, nauseatingly pleasant userbases and moderators that are treated as and act like living gods. Admins are revered as icons of perfection, untouchable transcendental beings with unlimited power. To speak against them is heresy. ESR is a rare specimen of a site where you can talk back to a staff member and get away with it. You can completely derail a thread with inane bullshit and walk away fine, as long as the userbase approved of the intensity generated from it. This strange balance between informative discussions, completely insane arguments, absolutely random interjections and the "guy just like me" feel you get from the staff is what I'd say is worthy of preserving. I find the decision to ban Zhu really disappointing. You can say it is a mercy kill but in the end it boils down to "fuck it, too much work", which is a sad turn of events on a site that never focused on precise moderation strikes to cut down loadwork. You should know better than anyone.
