I never played quake on linux, how much of a performance drop and/or lag increase are we talking about if you play through some emulator through windows?

Well, I just did a quick test (using exactly the same config) with Q3's official binaries for Windows (running on Wine) and for Linux (native x86 binaries) and there is some difference, even if slight. I didn't get the same stable 125FPS running it on Wine as I did using the native Linux build and the mouse felt a bit different (maybe related to the FPS fluctuation). Also, the more I moved the mouse, the more FPS drops I'd get on Wine (while the FPS's keep steady on the native Linux build). I didn't try to play online, though.

I suspect that, since QL is more demanding on the hardware than Q3, the difference will probably be more noticeable.

I think the standalone is great for most, if we lose some linux and mac users that sucks, but I think the standalone can do good things and attract twice or even more than the lost users in windows by being more attractive.

I'm not going to pay ~160$ just to play ql. Looks like for most ppl here 20$/year is too much.

Win 7 could be found at 20$ nearly at release date. I don't even imagine what Win XP is worth now. Beside that, PC Gaming without Windows is pretty much a wasteland.

I played many windows games in the past and I still sometimes do through wine (scbw, homm3, diablo, cs, rbr etc.) I just don't care about pc games as a genre. I care about games by capital G. Games where you challenge yourself or your opponent(s). Games that are fun and give you a satisfaction when you improve. Some of these are indeed pc games.

Already runs under Wine. We've had multiple reports within our testing group of it running find under the latest Wine, and at 250fps.

Does it work out of the box or do I need some special libraries? I tried today at work but it failed.

Currently, I see it as a stepping stone.

It will allow them to implement features that were impossible to add previously due to the huge differences between the browser and the game itself.

It might make it more easily to push it toward Steam as well which might open the gates to a "greater" community.

Nobody really know their exact plans so right now, we can only hope for the best once it will be released.

I'm still confused about why people think "going standalone" should mean more than "going standalone".

I'm not keen about technology honestly, but running a game and only the game itself after I've launched the .exe file has always seem lighter to me than running the game + the internet browser (which might be heavy if there are add-ons etc).

Now we are talking about Quake Live, I can get over 600 fps with my rig. Nowadays it's really not hard... it should not. Most people should be able to run this game flawlessly.

But here is the funny thing, I'm not sure if it's because it's not running natively from the desktop, but Asylum has always had weird behaviours, whatever the PC I use. I will always get that stable 125 fps, but man, during certain moments I can see some weird tearing, it's just weird, I can't explain it, I can see the game "slowing down". As if my PC is just slower (but it's not). Now go figure what the hell happens.

I don't know why the others want it to be standalone, but this is my reason.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but, aside from ID still footing the bill for pub servers, I don't get why people would play QL over Q3 after this move. This seems like a huge step backwards.

I didn't mean to +1 you, I thought that was the reply button. :P But anyway, Some of the downfalls you mention could be fixed with an external game browser. There are ones that exist, or someone could make a better one...

I preferred having QL in a browser too but there's still a world of difference between having to download and execute a launcher and having to install Q3, the modes you want, re-install them cause you're not at the right version, find the right version of every damn map you need, etc. QL is still much easier to use for a new player.

For ctf, the most popular server is probably a q3 server, but the games are so crowded they are crap. Like 12v12 sometimes :s

Sorry, I always had the notion that the entire purpose of QL was supposed to make getting started easier for newbs than Q3. Making things standalone and limited to Windows only just complicates things further, especially when the original game can be played on multiple platforms (including mobile devices).

IMO having a game that you can't even install where you want and with hole i_need_to_go_to_website_just_to_play_this_game_i_dont_even_use_browser_mode_sigh shit... Exe is better and simplier.

You'll just install the game as any other game and when you launch it, you'll have all the QL features like friends, server browsers etc. inside the same, instead of in a browser that you then launched the game from.

I hope to see lots of people come back to q3. There are some active servers but a lot of empty ones too that could use some action.

I subscribed to QL but it never felt right for me so I only used it a few times. I'm on a Mac and it was unstable in all my browsers, and the aim felt wrong. This is probably because the game was slow. It gets like 80fps. Q3 gets 500+ on timedemo. This is probably why there are weak Mac subscriptions.

Plus in q3 the game feels more solid to me. QL feels more like cpma. Base q3 or osp feels to me like I'm in the actual arena. CPMA or QL feels like I'm playing a normal video game. Hard to describe. Plus CTF is way more fun in q3, QL really messed up ctf.

There are a few downsides to q3 though. Lots of console stuff to get your stuff working the way you want at first. Some nice maps will be missing from QL (but maybe if q3 gets popular again they will be ported). And that's about it. There are no rankings and no name protection etc but it doesn't really matter. You usually just end up finding a few well run servers that you like and hang out at those places.

I'm sure lots of you would like cpma too. But it's not my thing.
