the asus gtx 770 looks good. not sure whether the prices have shifted yet, but the cost difference between the 760 and 770 isn't too much. right now i'm going with the asus 770. thanks.

biggest concern about this build for me is the mainboard. the asus p8z77 ws is clean and simple, but i think some expense is being added for extremely high end ram support.

looks like other asus p8z77 boards support the same types of ram. they're just not as clean and simple.

okay, i swapped p8z77 ws for the p8z77-v pro. same chipset, same features, different heat sinks, and the v pro doesn't have 2 ethernet jacks. v pro also has less usb 3.0 ports, but 4 is enough for me.

I wish corsair made every component.

Well than no reason to upgrade! My grandfather had a recliner he bought when he came back from ww2, by the time I was a child it was quite worn and ugly to look at. The family would always try to get him a new chair but he would always say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!".

I was actually going to post a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" caption of Gary Busey from Soldier but I couldn't find one and cba to make one.

Maybe win7 is broken in some ways but I don't think the user interface is necessarily one of them.

I'm using 8.1 with start8 (7 start menu) and it's pretty much a faster windows 7. some things are annoying tho, notably that some programs needs to run with admin permission for some reason. other things are WAY better tho like file explorer, search and boot time.

7 is fine. 8.1 is fine. doesn't really matter tbh.

Deffo, but you won't be running 8 now since you'd update to 8.1. So 8 is kinda irrelevant. Tho the difference in user experience between 8 and 8.1 was pretty much null for me using start8.

Agreed. I was on Win2k forever. Finally upgraded to XP after I think Doom 3 forced me to. Windows 7 in the same boat.

Win2000 was probably the best OS ever made by MS. After that was always downhill... :|

If your content with your current ui, you will be in severe pain using the new one (albeit it can be avoided). Also, there is no merit for upgrading to 8; no new directx, nothing that only works natively on 8 and not on 7. I'm intending to skip 8 in the hope of them realising just how stupid the new ui is, and getting back to fixing some of the other problems (and missing features) they have left unattended.

8.1 still has that polling rate nonsense issue. I would suggest using 8.0 for now and download the service pack (which is free for windows 8 users) later when they fix the crap.

okay, went with the new hardware listed in the main post, windows 7 pro, antec three hundred illusion case (current pc has the antec three hundred, great case). i've decided against buying a cd/dvd drive, because i haven't used my current drive since the last time i installed windows, but i have one or two i can throw in the case for the initial windows install. good times!

worked great. only problem i ran into is that for some reason it required a disc with drivers. i had a second usb stick sitting around, though, so just copied mainboard drivers from the cd to usb memory on my other computer.

Why spend $90 on 8gb ram? I spent $20 on my 2x4gb set 2 years ago. Your memory shouldn't be a bottleneck in normal gaming use.

Also what's the point in an expensive mobo if you're not going to xfire/sli. I would also go cheaper on the psu (750W is overkill for a single gpu.)

You could have waited some more months to see how much performance you gain from Mantle or that newer released games use more cores and therefore cheaper AMD cpus like the 8320 will bring you more performance.

On the other hand none of the above will maybe happen. So nice build and have fun! :) Still the psu is a bit over the top! :)

You will only get some massive amount of input lag from your "upgrade".
Intel Turbo/Speedstep + C States add a ton of delay, but can be disabled. On some Asus M/B HPET cant be disabled.
Nvidia 300+ series drivers add like 14+ ms of input lag, playing with 125 hz mouse feels better than using those drivers.

That test is kinda weird, it gets easy to predict, got 0ms burst and some below 100 results.

but still with newer drivers mouse response feels much slower, same thing with hpet and eist+c1e, cant aimbot between targets as fast as I can with those things turned off.

Maybe its less noticeable problem on 120hz fast monitor for you guys(as input lag gets to the tolerable area), but I felt delay even on CRT.

Intel cpu with good overclock potential, seen that 3570/3770 are worse than 2500/2600, maybe 4670/4770 are better at this. No idea about hyperthreading, but virtual threads should have an impact on latency.

Cheapest reliable m/b with good overclock potential + lots of options to turn off useless things that cause trouble. Having native intel usb 3.0 ports is a plus as not native have latency. Wifi gives huge dcp latency on notebooks, no idea about desktops, but Id be careful with it.

The lowest timings memory you can get for minimum price, frequency doesnt matter.
I have the memory that you selected, got 0 problems but I didnt overclock, samsung memory should be better, but Im no expert in this.

PSU enough for overclocked cpu and card. No need to future proof for sli/crossfire as this rendering methods delay frames so you get less microstutter.

All extra money can be put in single card.

amd card + radeon pro to set 0 or 1 flip queue size(should be better than nvidia even at default 3 frames).

Maybe you have later card than 500 series so you cant compare, there is huge input lag difference between 295.73 and any 300 series driver. Why nothing wrong with HT and drivers? Can you show some high speed camera tests and technical explanation that they are 100% fine?

I can notice input lag difference between ql min and max settings, with AA on or off, can you?

I dont even bother with AA/AF or any form of graphics quality in any game. That said, where are your high speed camera pics? :P

You probably have some latency bottlenecks in other place, with hpet turned on and c-states+speedstep its probably very hard to see driver latency difference.
For me its easy to notice delay while aiming 180 degrees back and forth with medium/fast speed.

u sure ur not just playing on a dire 60hz screen? I have none of those issues.

I turn everything off or on low thats possible, there shouldnt be any bottlenecks at all. That said, I have alot of my 950 i7 features disabled so the cpu runs colder -> higher oc. I currently dont need 8 threads.

In fact I'm wondering if he plays any game at all or is not just clinically obsessed with latency :P There was some similar guy on the nvidia forums (he lurked on overclock.net too) and it turned out he was playing some random online fps (I just know it wasn't Quake or UT, maybe BF or COD or CS) on a 60hz LCD because he read somewhere that it had "0 input lag" as measured per the old flawed flash timer method.

There's a lot of BS in this post. You really think HPET has an impact on input lag? Dude, HPET latency is in the range or microseconds (&#956;s), not ms, if you have even just 1ms of DPC latency you have a BIG problem and you will get a lot of stuttering sound and all that crap.

And the input lag issue with nvidia drivers was fixed by turning off nvidia scaling, and I haven't seen any such issue with recent nvidia GPUs anyway... And it felt nothing like 125hz mouse, plus I only ever saw that lag on the desktop, not in actual 3d applications.

And Intel Turbo is fine (just like nvidia Turbo, btw) there can be issues with speedstep/c-steps sure but it's not complicated to configure those things.

You have no idea what timers are and how they work, and what dcp latency is.

Wow turning off nvidia scaling, never thought of that, seems like in 295.73 drivers the scaling is more turned off than in 300 ones.

Why are you not taking a i5 4670k or i7 4770k?

The i5 is just as fast as the i7 for gaming, unless you're doing heavy stuff like compiling, video editing and stuff like that theres no point. And i would still take the 4770k instead of the 3770k.

Very true, I myself went from 650w to 550w (when my 650w Corsair PSU died) because I wanted a cooler and quieter PSU with higher quality parts + my new parts use a whole lot less power than my old ones (recent Intel and nvidia parts + SSD for the OS etc).

You are incorrect about this.
750W psu is major overkill that is true, but efficiency has nothing to do with it.
Ancient 500w with not even 80plus certificate delivers exactly the same amount of watts as 500w platinium psu. Only difference is, the latter will pull less current from the socket, thus less power is dissipated as heat.

old psu's were less efficient outside the '40-60% power usage point'. these days theyre efficient in between ~10-90% power usage. thats why previously people recommended psu's that were quite a bit more powerful, to stay in that cool+quiet+efficient range.

these days its a waste of money to spend more on a bigger psu, eventhough efficiency is pretty good on the correct wattage psu that you really need.

If you're going to use it for gaming, dont waste money on the i7. Just get an i5. It wont make a difference. The only thing your getting is a better integrated graphics card which you wont use since youll get the GTX.
