Well, that happened way back actually in QW. One of the promoters of the Swedish Championship stole the ticket money and disappeared. Can't remember which year it was, but in the early days anyways.
Still remember that day, how bitter it was that there'd be nothing at all and we'd basically paid 50 quid for nothing.

That was in the days of LakermaN, Xenon, DOOMer, etc.. And when the scene of competitive gaming was basically the only LAN for quake you could go to to prove yourself in the scene..

This kind of scam seems to be very popular around here, had a similar situation with a property agent a while ago. The police still works on the case, but sadly the local law system somehow allows these guys to get away with it. :(

Don't like the idea of crowd funding for a large prize (in grand scheme of things) when the tourney is strictly for Swedish players.

I'd much rather see that money going into prize pools for either 125fps Cups, FaceIt or Dreamhack Winter... or split between. Infact I'd love the people behind QL at DHW to start a crowd funded scheme to up the prize pool for the duel tournament, something doable say $2-3k then anything over is a bonus.

I agree with you , QL and DHW should crowd fund the pricepools to be able to host a bigger tournament. The only problem is that this would'nt solve the problem with only a few players would be able to win that money. That is why I'm doing this as a swedish player-only. I believe we need to host tournaments for players that dont find it worth going to Quakecon, because of their low chance of winning anything. And Sweden is a great place to start.

And besides this, there is alot of really good Swedish players that would be really fun to watch playing, even if you're not a Swede yourself.

With a prizepool that big everyone should be able to participate. Make it 200€ or less and it seems more fair for a single country to play for it.

It will be a free to enter cup, but the goal is to make the pricepool bigger than 250 euro. The minimum is set to 300 euro, but the goal is 1200 euro total. That's why I try to crowdfund it, to be able to host a free to join cup but still with a high pricepool.

I dont agree. The problem with Quake is not that the pricepools are to big - the problem is that there are to little money over all. And to be honest I think having a high price tournament for a singel country will both make the stream more funny to watch, and allow players who are not the best in the world (today) to play and have a chance of winning a price that actually matters.

And besides this; I want to make this a tournament that both attract new quake live stream watchers, and remeber those who have forgotten how fun it is to watch Quake. But I wouldnt be able to do this with an international tournament, because if its international, no swedish newspapers will find it interesting to write about it. I got plenty of contacts with journalists and newspapers, but to be able to use them it need to be a Swedish Championship of Quake Live.

Not really. If it was a LAN you would have to hire a place for everybody to be at, this would cost money to hire. Then you would have to make sure that all players can make it to that place at that time. If they can stay at home it would probably be easier for all of them to join.

So a LAN has some disadvantages over a internet tourney. Of course a LAN has advantages to such as lower ping, but then if it is only for Swedish players ping shouldn't be a problem.

Online, to make shore all the big names will be able to play the tournament. Dont really see the point with hosting a LAN the first time around, it just takes money from the pricepool to arrange with a place to be and things like that. But maybe in the future.

If it is in Malmö all of the players would have to go there at that time. Traveling time and so on make it easier to host a tournament online. you will get 50 ping or so maximum witch doesn't really make a difference.

I just talked to Fazz who is the first one to sign up for the cup, and he said he could only play it if it is online, and I think most top players feel the same thing. Even if there is a large price pool, travel can be hard to combine with work and things like that. But maybe the time after this one. The whole point with hosting a Swedish Championship should be having it returning every year, and that's my goal if the first one works out as it should. :)

I'm working on getting Tox to sign up, but have not been able to talk to him yet. But I will not give up, and as soon as I get to talk to him I'll do everything in my power to convince him. :) He's the number one player I want to see in the cup.

And yeah, January is a long time, but I didnt want to compete with Dreamhack, combined with me wanting to make sure I had time to make the cup perfect. And besides this, I think some more or less retired players are really greatful to get some practice time before it's time to compete. I don't think that would have been a problem. Most of the players I've talked about likes the idea of a Swedish Championship, and would probably play even if the prize pool was 120 euro.

But the goal is now reached, thanks to one huge donator, so that's just a hypothetical question. :)

If the prizepool is 1200 euro's you shouldn't blow it all in 1 tourney but make a (bi)monthly tournament or something like 125FPS cup for Scandinavians (stop denying Danes & Norsks already). Anyways, awesome to hear about the donations. I really love the Quake scene :).

That is a good idea, and someone else should absolutly do that. I would love to be able to follow and watch streams of a monthly Scandinavian Cup, or something like that.

But for me to change the Swedish Championship to this, it's a little bit late: the donators have donated for the kind of cup described above, and it wouldnt just be rude to change that now, it would be against the rules of the crowdfunding site I used to collect the money. The only way this would be possible is to return everything donated, and then start a new project with a new description.

But with that said, I also want to say that I'm really happy with this kind of tournnament, and I wouldnt want to change it for the world. I think that the awsome list of sign ups, and much of the possitive respons I've gotten is a direct result of making it like this. For example all the retired players would for sure not have signed up for a international cup, but did for a Swedes only cup.

But everyone should feel free to start something themselfs, either for the whole of Scandinavia or for singel countrys. I would do everything in my power to support them, and to help them with a marketing strategy, getting in touch with the contacts I got, and things like that.

Because here is the thing; we are not competitors in this, and one cup does not rule out the possibility of another cup. The Quake sceen is both bigger and smaller than many fans think, and there really is room for more than one, two or fifty different cups. You don't have to choose between a Swedish Championship or a Nordic Championship, it is totally possible to have both. And to be honest, I think having both national and international cups is the right way to go, it would help the fan base to grow, and this will help getting Quake the attention the game deserves.

So stop having opinions about this or that: do something yourself instead. And do it the way you think would be best for Quake, and best for the community. I promise to help you as much as possible - just ask, and I'll help.

Yeah, that is right. And besides this, the list is just a small part of the project. I'm thinking big - really big - and some of the things I'm currently working on takes some time to arrange. I will update on this later, when it's all ready. :)

And btw, Dreamhack is also a important reason to have the cup late January. It would just be unwise to plan something that may collide with Dreamhack. But as it is now, hopefully some of the more well knowned names that have signed up for this cup, will also go to DH. It would be awsome if the Swedish Championship could give us matches with Tox, Fox etc, not just ones, but also at Dreamhack. :)

It's never a good idea to plan it so far into the future. Right now there is interest and people are excited about the cup. Two months from now almost none will remember about it. In January half of the people from the list won't even play quake anymore. Dreamhack dates are known, how hard would it be to not collide with them :O)

You would be right if this was an ordinary tournament, but I got something in mind that will solve the problems you mention. Both regarding getting the players to practice and play, and regarding getting many viewers. But as I wrote; I'll make an update on this later. :)

But even without that plan, I think it's necessary to plan it this far ahead. Many of the oldschool players are probably a bit rusty right now, and will need time to practice. Most of them has told be that they will take this serious, and that they will try to win the cup.

Something more oldschool, but with a few new ones. I'm working on it right now, and I think I'll post an update about it tomorrow. It's gonna be a map pool of seven maps, so there is room for most players to be able to play their favorite.
