more of a action/ninja rpg than strategy

deus ex was okay, but feels really dated now. human revolution was decent, but gets boring & repetitive when you get to hong kong. i like the setting, though.

fire emblem and the xcom games are my favorite turn-based strategy games.

on the subject of upcoming games. starbound, stardew valley, star citizen, axiom verge and the forest are on my wishlist.

edit: updated with links. fairly wide range of games as i like to play anything good, even if it involves pixel farming.

fire emblem is good, but i really want a crpg with problem solving in between fights, rather than just some pointless story giving a reason for the next fight to happen.

what do you mean by problem solving? most crpgs have a story to uncover and characters to configure between missions. tactical and strategy rpgs like xcom involve base building and outfitting soldiers in downtime.

i see. what i'm hoping exists is a game that has a story, character interactions, dialogs with consequences, problem solving that requires logic/mathematics/reason/any sort of thinking, and grid based turn-based fights with small parties.

also, thanks for the heads up about those other games. i'm really looking forward to oculus rift.

fallout 2.

edit: just read your post further down regarding fallout tactics so this might not be for you although it ticks almost every box. it's obviously an old game now that you may have already played but if not give it a decent run. seems like truly turn based crpgs are a thing of the past since baldur's gate as games now favour a rolling action timer with pause feature. I prefer turn-based for the rigid rules and forward planning you can achieve but there we go. good luck finding something.

oculus rift - a lot of work to do but should usher in interest from all major companies to develop vr which can only be a good thing. the rift itself is going to have a wealth of supported software by the time it releases. looking forward to it.

i really think fallout 2 will fulfill a lot of what i'm looking for. it's amazing how rare these sorts of games are, though. maybe the audience is incredibly small?

definitely enjoying fallout 2. took a litlte while to get a feel for it. now i just need to figure out if there are shortcuts for performing actions instead of the scroll wheel. thanks for the suggestion.

glad you're enjoying it. tempted to give it another run myself but got quite a backlog of games to play. i know there was a few pre-fallout 3 players unhappy with the changes made to the formula. on the subject of the audience being small i don't think that is necessarily the case as dragon age was popular and this for me demonstrates the interest is still strong. more to do with a lack of quality titles with good promotion perhaps. i don't know if you fancy spaceflight type games but currently i'm playing ksp which i'm sure you could sink your teeth into.

character interactions, dialogues with consequences, problem solving...well, that sounds like life itself, but I see what you mean. It would be cool to have such a game indeed.

it's true that i'm looking for a game that is like life, except that the consequences in a game are inconsequential outside the confines of the game. oh, and as losty said, the rigidity of a turn based system is a very relaxed way to spend time thinking about actions and consequences. in life, mutants don't wait for you to issue a chain of commands before they're beating your face in. also, hp. :D

They don't get much better than Jagged Alliance 2. Fallout: Tactics is solid, too.

i'll definitely check out jagged alliance 2. i've been kind of back and forth about trying it, because the setting and style aren't really appealing to me. a friend warned me against fallout: tactics because the interface & some game mechanics are really tedious and haven't aged well, but i may get it anyway.

i was really hoping there would be something with a setting similar to the front mission games, but with crpg open world.

Maybe have a look at The Banner Saga which should be out soon (the F2P multiplayer is already out).

If you're at all into high fantasy settings you might want to check out Knights of the Chalice. The game is fucking hard as shit. Well made and written too, despite its archaic look. For sure the best computer emulation of third edition D&D rules out there. Fair bit of actual role playing in it, too.

x-com is the way to go ...
the first 2 titles ufo and tftd are very hard though, maybe only 5 % of the people actually trying to play this game seriously achieve to win it ... there is also a new title ufo enemy unknown out there which is a little easier, but still hard ...
for me definitely the best tactical game out there, with some little rpg elements ...
afaik the new shadowrun tried to copy the xcom combat gameplay ...
