At this early in the development phase, there is no set feature list. If you have any questions concerning a specific feature / functionality that you would like to see, I will do my best to answer your concerns.

Yes. We also plan on officially supporting CPMA, OSP, RA3, and Threewave mods out of the box.

Completely. Fraglove requires a retail version of Q3A and in some ways promotes the piracy of retail Q3A assets (mentions the exact filename and its size of pak0.pk3 on the website). Unlike Fraglove, Fragrr is 100% free, powered by a custom ioquake3 build, and uses NOTHING from the retail Q3A. Furthermore, the distribution / installation process will be extremely simple and painless in comparison to fraglove.

Legality?

Fragrr will be free to use at all levels, and as such will be completely legal. We DO NOT intend on profiting from user-developed content at all.

Making his own assets should prove to be quite a work but since he promises that it "plays identical to that of quake3 1.32", I guess he intends to mimic Q3's pak0 without actually copying the content.

That's pretty much impossible to get high quality models, textures and sounds for a project. One of the main reasons there was never a standalone CPM I believe.

It depends on your intentions. it's free to use under CC-NoDerivs license which means the creator doesn't care how you use it. You just can't use it for commercial or monetary gain (so basically, you're game has to be non-profit and primarily free, supported solely by ads and/or supporters/donators)

Oh, and you can't modify any of his work either or you break the license.

Nah I've tried it. That screenshot posted doesn't really do it justice. The textures in the pack have been redone and they actually look better than the original Q3A textures imo.

I've used every Q3 texture pack (there are a few, though most "HQ mods" are just a compilation of numerous different packs), and they all look like crap. I know that it's because of how purist I am, but the maps just don't feel right with a different texture - these are not simply high resolution versions of the default textures. They are completely new textures, and that ruins it for me.

Definitely purist! But so am I. :-) Unfortunately, there's no way to legally use the original assets outside of the original game. I think this pack is supposed to look somewhat like newer, distinct textures to avoid any potential copyright infringement violations from the original creators.

Maybe that's the reasoning, but that's why I don't like it.

This is true, textures shouldn't really alter much of the "feel" of a map at all to be honest, especially when picmip'd to death.

Fragrr is a collaborative effort which plans to rely entirely and exclusively on a large pool of free, user-developed, open-source content from various authors/sources, all of which will be fully credited and disclosed as we move closer to the full completion of the game.

No man, I wouldn't use the original assets. There are a bunch of better alternatives. For example, check out xcsv's replacement pack which successfully replaces all gfx assets from the original.

If you do enough digging, you can find quality, free alternatives for nearly all of the original assets from the game.

I haven't thoroughly looked for many assets yet, but you could probably use the Q3 Demo pk3 files for some models and sounds and get replacements for whatever's missing. the demo pk3 file comes with sarge, grunt, visor, major player models and all of the weapon models (except bfg and grenade) iirc.

I can't release too many details on how it will work. However, some planned key features you can look forward to that will make things easy for someone starting out:

- User interface for modifying and sharing your player config with others.
- Find and share games from our web-based server browser interface.
- Robust queue system for organizing pickups and duels.
- Competitive clan management system. Manage your clan roster and book official clan matches against others.
- Social networking tools for meeting new friends and keeping in touch with existing ones.
- Easily customize and spawn as many servers as you can afford in any available location from our selected partners directly from our website.

As much as I would like, free gameservers are not a plausible option. For those who require their own gameservers, there will be costs associated with renting them.

Oh definitely. Infact, we assume most players will not know what to do with it. There will be easier, user-friendlier methods implemented and prioritized on-site for players to start and manage their servers. However, for those that are familiar with Q3's server commands, and would like to take advantage of that feature, it will be an available option that they may look into.

Any attempt on getting a functional matchmaking system implemented?

Yes, it wouldn't really work out without one considering this game has arguably the highest skill ceiling in the genre of all time. A common example is: a person who knows even the basics of strafe jumping has a major advantage over someone who has yet to learn that technique and cannot move around maps as fast.

Beyond that, the skill cap gets even deeper when you start to introduce timing items, spawns, advanced movement techniques, CPM movement, etc.

And even after one has mastered all of these fundamental techniques, the competition at the top is still just as cut-throat for each individual gametype. I've yet to see a true master of all which Quake has to offer, nearly undefeatable in almost every aspect of the game.

QL has tiers / skillratings, but that approach has proven to be heavily flawed in various ways. Players who have yet to learn the basics of the game should never be placed within the highest tier of any game.

the problem with tiers is the fact that it doesnt have a "number" to compare one player from the other.

Aswell as the issue of people joining whatever servers they want and at times individually sniping people ie. looking for an easy game.

There will always be people looking for an easy win in any game, especially if that person is overly concerned with number figures and prioritizes padding their stats over improving their game against better players.

Why should anyone care / play this rather than QL?

To be clear, the primary mission of this project IS NOT to draft player's from QL's existing playerbase, but rather, introduce an even larger crowd to Quake, and the FPS scene in general.

Therefore, if you absolutely enjoy QL as it is, and have no interest in trying out other FPS games to see what they have to offer, then good for you. Have fun with it. Otherwise, if you are even remotely interested in how things sound, you would be doing yourself a good service by signing up for our mailing list. Doing so will allow you to be the first to know when our project is ready to be tested for deployment.

A number of features are planned to be implemented which will differentiate us from our competitors (QL included). For comparisons sake, there will be no governing authority halting/dictating the game's development process for one. Fragrr will be a free to use Q3A+Social Networking service wrapped in one, and supported entirely by its community. We encourage developers to create and share content which fully supports our platform. As such, people will be able to play on a variety of supported user-developed maps and mods.

Sorry you feel that way. CPMA/RA3 players and ex-ql-cheaters are the last groups of people we are looking to attract! I can understand how one can make that assumption here though seeing as how those types of players are clearly a prominent force on this forum.

Right, attracting large groups of players who have years of experience playing Quake or Quake-related games (such as the CPMA/RA3 crowd) is not in our best interest for this project. Not saying we'll be filtering out and blocking players from our project who are starting out with more experience than others, but we won't actively pursue that target audience either.

While we would love to eventually move our game away from utilizing assets which are not unique to our project, unless there is enough initial community support and development going on for this project during its beta phases, we will continue to use assets from freely available sources.

For mods, maps, etc that heavily rely on retail Q3A assets, they will be fully replaced one way or another.

I remember talking to Stahlaal (fraglove dev) about creating a free to play quake 3 package... according to him you could take a quake 3 texture, resize and repackage it as new, and then distribute that file as a legal third party texture...

The texture image would need to be different. If the image looks exactly the same with just a filesize change, I'd imagine that would be just as illegal as using the original texture.

It's only copyright infringement if you are using materials which are protected by a copyright without the copyright holder's permission. And even then, most copyright holders won't waste their money on you unless they feel that you are costing them a considerable profit loss.

I did some mediocre skinning for jk2 about 5 years ago so i can't remember exactly what progam i used, but you could take a texture, add a filter with a click of the mouse, and the texture would be unrecognizable from the original. Yes, but that never stopped the creations of works such as 6+, dm17+, etc. who's layouts are obviously heavily inspired by the originals.

Well, the beautiful thing about mod support is that each mod has its own different, unique capabilities so there will always be something for everyone.

Because CPMA was used as the de-facto mod for competitive play, I'm not 100% certain if CPMA is as flexible as OSP when it comes to tweaking core game mechanics such as weapon damage. It probably wasn't something that the author had wished for players to mess around with.

I know for a fact that you can fine-tune and tweak those things in OSP. In terms of overall feel, I'm not sure how close someone would be able to get it to QL though, but it definitely isn't impossible if someone really wanted to pursue that.

It'd be good timing if it were done sooner than later.

QL is about to end Linux, Mac, and QLPrism support. And everyone is just waiting the next game or Reborn/Reflex to come out, which are still a couple years away.

We had to wait ages for QL to catch up with Q3 mods.
Reading the change logs from cpma made me realize how many bugs or inconsistencies Q3 & mods still have.
'Even' cpm after fixing loads then went on to add more problems and deteriorated at the end of development IMO.
Trying to recruit ENOUGH new regular players to anything OLD looking is a joke, have you tried this before now?


I still think that an arena type game on tech 5, without the Satanic SCFI theme of Q3, would still be more popular than RAGe on all platforms, if done properly.
Maybe QL 2 on tech 5 could bring it back to mainstream, maybe not.
l also think QL would have been better, more popular if all the man hours were spent on getting tech4 up to speed and continue from where q4 pro mod left off. IMO,< rhetorical anti argument disclaimer.
