Whenever I go on QuakeLive wether I want to play CA/TDM/CTF/FFA/DUEL there is a game available within my ping range with people on. Until this doesn't happen I don't see a problem.
There's a large enough portion of the game that is free to play to get people interested if they want to... and the subs are pretty miniscule if they want more. The people who are just trying the game out or playing casually aren't going to give a shit which maps they have the option of playing. (I can say this due to every big ffa server is full of people voting maps like thunderstruck and arena gate - 16 players)

You can do it once the match's finished but you can only choose from 3 maps. Very small maps shouldn't appear there on a server with a large teamsize though. Also, if the server was spawned by a pro player, you can still callvote maps from the standard map pool. Or maybe he was talking about, you know, before the map rotation system was used.

Free to play games are usually selling assets which are giving strong advantage to buyer, or they selling ability to buy some suff in game sooner rather than later, or they sell some decorative stuff which makes ingame player character unique.

There is no such thing as a FTP Game. There will always be the cheap people who don't want to pay for the game and constantly whine for more free content, and then there is the people who actually enjoy the game and want to see its continued success and actually invest some of their own money into it. The FTP idea is like what has been mentioned a million times its there to let people get a taste of the game, to see if they actually enjoy it and want to support it by purchasing it, at least from a business point of view that makes sense. Of course people on the other hand are also greedy and just either want your money or want everything for free, its a vicious cycle that our society has created for itself.

negative side of things is, that it's probably nominally as expensive in western Europe as it is in rus and ua, which makes it more expensive to those countries (because of lower wages). Russia has the biggest playerbase, probably most of them are teenagers, which makes it even more difficult to pay. Maybe a discount in those countries could increase the overall profit.

Indeed it is possible to gain more profit by lowering your price but is it really possible and safe to do it region-based on the internet? If it is, would the benefits out-weight the increased management costs? Would there be heavy losses with people faking their countries? Hard to tell.

In free videogames most of the time there are premium features, which you must buy or atleast that are very necessary and good.

So by comparing the fact that a game which is sold in shops can always be cracked and downloaded for free, the freemium system with online servers can always guarantee that people who want something will have to pay for it.

There is no way that you can crack a premium item or anything (except for few bugs on some games).

Also this guarantees a higher income on online games, since if you see someone with a really cool premium thing, you would love to get it .. but the only way is by paying it (and you fall in their system).

Believe me or not but freemium stuff is getting a lot more money than normal games which are classicaly sold.

Even if the richer will be the stronger, a lot of people falls in that trap and buys atleast something.

Because it's not their original works, and they weren't the ones who made it popular in the first place. Majority of the content on QL was originally developed and made popular by the community, not ID, as free-to-use for the players.

It's also very sad to see that they stole/twisted some of the previous works created by others and butchered them beyond recognition. (pql, freezetag, race, ca, etc...)

I don't see how people continue to support it, especially if they are familiar with the works of the original authors.

Wrong. QL brought plenty of new players to the game. I got hooked on QL without being much of a quaker before and same goes for a lot of my friends.

I never argued that it didn't. I'm sure you're not alone. Infact, I'm positive that there are plenty of people who QL introduced to the series.

However, it's utterly laughable if you believe the amount of players QL introduced to the series can be compared to the amount of players Q3 introduced to it.

Q3 lasted a good 10 years before dying a slow death, and left a legacy that will probably never be topped within the multiplayer FPS genre. On the otherhand, people view QL and Q4 like mentally retarded step-children that no one wants.

From the way things are looking, I highly doubt QL will be able to pass the test of time as its predecessor had. I wouldn't be surprised if Zenimax forced ID to shut things down before 2014 citing "lack of funds".

Playing with players of your own skill-level helps alleviate that situation. There's no reason a new player should be forced playing in a server full of guys who are 100x more experienced. QL doesn't really do much to fix that issue, either.

As a whole, QL can never be better than Q3, period. The reason is simple: It's impossible for the small team behind QL to do what hundreds and thousands of Q3 devs have done to add to the game over the years.

ID is good at laying the groundwork, but now it needs to get off its high-horse, and let the community develop their game for them like they had in the past. Otherwise, QL will always be one-step behind.

About new players. Tiers 1 and 2 are actually very newbie friendly. However, after you get to to Tier 4 you usually feel like you are a complete Tier 1 newb once again. Taking how ping plays such an important factor and the small player base there is little to nothing id can do to match up people better.

Comparing Q3 and QL. Again you only present opinion and not fact. I could say the same Q3 can never be as good as QL as it is like more than 10 years old.

Your ideas about the business part of the game are just laughable. Make 99% of the content free to play. Give it all open source to the community to make id completely redundant. community made content was free although people still had to buy quake 3. now id has paid for that community made content (maps) which to get complete access to you have to pay for but the game is free. paid players can spawn a server however they wish so save money on hosting charges via a provider. free users also get a good deal. no pay to win elements and map rotation + gamemode samplers so over time they get to experience everything.

In QL there's no stolen ideas or content. The company pays and gets authorization from the authors, which is the probably the main reason why there aren't thousands of maps in the game.

I doubt the authors of Freezetag, CPMA, and Defrag were compensated or even contacted when ID decided to introduce their own spinoffs of their works.

The only reason they bother obtaining authorization from map authors when using their maps is because its less work than recreating them or developing better ones themselves.

Of course, the best solution would have been to allow the community to develop their own third party content for QL (as how it was in Q3). That would've not only made the community become more involved, but would've made the entire experience for all players way more enjoyable.

The community can submit maps to QL. Problem is very few people do nowadays (not more than 5) and they have to adequate to the quality standar (lets face it most q3 custom made maps were crap).

A lot of people enjoyed Q3 just to shit around on those custom maps, regardless of how crappy they were designed.

That may sound stupid, but you should buy a pro subscription. The game isn't 100% free, just accept it as it is and buy pro.

I have pro for almost 2 years now, and the ability to spawn servers is very pleasant. Also the large ammount of customizations is very nice too.

What I like to do for example is to spawn a duel server on eyetoeye with vampiric damages, infinite ammos and 350hp 300ap. And then I invit someone in my friend list who has at least a decent shaft. Best way ever to practice hitscan !

Paying for server spawns is totally agreeable. Its very convenient, and its a bonus that should demand money if the player wants this function.I find server creating with their servers very fortunate, because those that are less fortunate with their internet connection can have their own little servers. And you dont have to dig through cvars to config it the way you want, its pretty much self explanatory.

Realistically, I just can't afford to spend the money on Premium/Pro given how little I have the opportunity to and actually do sit down and play it. I miss my subscription, especially if I do want a game, but 40 dabs a year isn't pocket change for me any more.

Think of it this way, quake for a whole year = going out drinking for a couple of evenings. You can also buy 1 month tokens, which is $8.

Also, if you play with friends or clan members often, you can share fees, pro players can invite anyone to the server they are on.

I know all about how to justify it to myself - I can't afford it.

QL needs a facelift. It's intolerable that in 2013 you kill a model, and the corpse is suspended in a stupid position on a ledge. We need ragdolls for the enemies when they die. I've shown the game to younger kids I know and they all laughed at that detail (damn kids)

I grew up killing a ton of people in DM17 and watching the gore fly. The game is boring for noobs, is too sterile.

The core gameplay is perfect as it is, the sounds and aesthetics in Q3 are perfect, it will never get any better when it comes to deathmatch, not in a million years.

In general no excuses and no technical/legal reasons for not adding content or implementing features. In other games things get done in the first year: here it's been more than 5 and most major requests aren't implemented because of that. You already know what the community wants, what should be done regardless and what other games feature nowadays: the need is not fresh ideas but to start working in all of that.

This won't happen. Simple reason really: They can't even get Duel Arena gametype implemented for the 1v1/2v2 ca maps that we have, yet you're essentially asking them to remake all the ra3 maps and/or make a new gametype that supports maps with multiple arenas / rooms in the same way that ra3 did.

I know there are reasons for not implementing RA3 itself, which wouldn't happen in other games, but they at least could create a spinoff that's the exact same -arenas, 32 players and all- but with different maps. As I said, it's been 5 years and things do not get done in this game.

On this second note, what people are asking right now is to finally have HD textures, sprites and others related, which is another thing asked since the conception of Quake Zero yet that never happened in all this time. Will it ever be done? I wouldn't bet on it.

That's why I see this recent surge of community feedback and token giveaways as a bluff from id. Things won't change from one day to another, and if they do even then they have years of work to catch up with.
We also saw this in the past too, plenty of times here on esr and in the beta forums. What I remember the most though was when syncerror promised to contact ESL to keep quake in IEM, offering them money and all like game companies do nowadays, and after a while carmac said he and the organization was never even contacted.

So to keep the rant short, there's more than 100 ready to be done ideas already. Asking for more feedback is almost an insult, as it assumes there's nothing left on schedule when in reality QL content-wise is miles worse than CPMA/Defrag/RA3 Q3 and as a game it's at least 5 years behind what's going on in the industry.
