Didn't see it in the cinema, maybe that's why it didn't attract me as much, but I did find it slightly boring and predictable in a lot of times, but what could I expect... not like they were going to change the whole story of superman

I usually look for some kind of story and script in the movies, so when i saw reviews barely breaking 60% i was on full alert. Then again, this is superman, how new the story can possibly be... But holy shit, I was surprised ... it was quite alright! Everything leading up to the earth and Amy Adams stuff is actually not bad at all and deserves its own movie.

This film has some of the best applied superman character development story lines and a very solid actor cast to back it up. The darker , grayer side of SM challenges with blending in is a little bit trendy with latest batmans and 007s, but it is implemented very well.

The main value, for me, was CGI. And i don't mean like graphics and sparkles and 250 mil worth of that shit, no. CGI was actually used the way it was meant to be, which is not to enhance the story, but to tell the story. The fights are god damn amazing, and CGI helps it happen. The destructions are superman scale. The CGI helps it happen. The art work of alien world, weather events, etc etc. There isn't part of the movie that is created solely for showing off CGI, but CGI is thoroughly used to express writers/director vision. I haven't felt like that since King Kong in 2005.

There are parts you have to be able to ignore. He's gonna have a girl on his neck. Let this not bother you. He's gonna break a few physics laws. Just let it go. At times it feels like some characters did not at all fit their purpose, but if you really roll out the script, you will see that it's quite rich and packed only in 2 hrs.

If you still can, watch this in a theater. Or watch this later in decent quality. Watch this. Period. This is one movie for which critics review should be completely ignored.

...and if you are contemplating between Man of Steel and Pacific Rim, watch MoS first. Pacific Rim is a much lower grade movie that will make your head explode on multiple occasions.

Before Midnight, now that's a SUPERB movie.

Expected a lot more from Man of Steel, something like Batman Dark Knight, but kinda let me down with all these expectations, also went to the imax for the first time, all the vfx were really cool but that was about it.

So weird, I just watched Before Sunrise the other day. Some pretty cool quotes on that movie.

Now about Man of Steel. It started out alright, the scenes in Crypton were nice. But the action scenes sucked though, just a lot of extremely powerful beings throwing each other through buildings over and over.

i'll wait for the 3rd remake.

spider man 2, the dark knight, the avengers. all work at least pretty well as movies period, which i'm looking for more so than explosions and boring forced drama from a character with a huge history just screaming for a different, more avengers like approach. all of those 3 understand and respect the source material which cannot be said about tmos. batman moans and whines obviously but that's his character. he has legitimate and well established reasons to behave that way and it isn't: 'you're the chosen jesus one kal-el. pa-el and ma-el have a plan to save the krypton and earth or whatever, but fuck earth actually you're better than them anyway. get to work jesus... i mean kal-el.' apart from monstrous misunderstanding of the superman concept the movie is just a boring hog of excessive destruction and focus group tested barely coherent bullshit plot obviously heavily rewritten during filming which left the weak script in dissaray. it's dumb, it's loud and obnoxious, doesn't make any sense (the number of plotholes one is able to forgive a summer movie intended as a simple escapism is exceeded immensly) and most importantly it's no fun. i want superman that saves the day. noble and strong. even corny a little I don't give a fuck. that's his character in a nutshell, it's very simple yet they fucked it up completely. do not recommend.

I found it extremely accurate, the way it portrayed perfection, and the struggle of a very perfect superman to constantly restrain own awesomeness in order not to hurt people. It really rang true to me and my everyday struggles as a Russian living in USA. At the same time, Kal betrayed his comrades, and that really ruined the happy ending for me. They should have destroyed Earth, like in that Tool song about LA.

Enjoyed it. Really liked the beginning with Russell Crowe in Krypton! Watched Superman Returns yesterday again because my wife wanted to see it. (she thinks the new superman is not so good looking :o )
Now that is an awful Superman movie. Even Kevin Spacey couldnt save it. Really really boring. Avoid at all cost :)

Watching the movie and then reading the book, I actually felt the movie-ending was a better fit for the whole theme and atmosphere. I do love both the book and movie, though.

I enjoyed the movie as well. It has some super-cringeworthy moments (like the church scene... seriously? plus all of that Jesus imagery), and I thought that they should not have had Superman and Lois Lane immediately fall in love/kiss in the first movie because frankly it felt a bit forced, but it was still entertaining. I'm surprised you didn't go see it at the cinema, because the effects were very impressive and definitely deserved to be seen on a big screen. The battle in Smallville was incredibly sick (I found it more entertaining than the final one) - probably one of the best superhero fights ever. And Faora (female Kryptonian) is extremely badass :p (see for example these two clips!).

Agreed about the Smallville fighting. My point in #59 -- the movie excels when the set's "small" enough(heh) to allow the audience to connect.
This is how The Avengers succeeded during the end city battle: by alternating hand-to-hand fight scenes in the streets/interiors with larger scope CGI battle pieces. The viewer doesn't disconnect with the scale.

On the plus side:
+ scenes w/o CGI like the schoolbus in the water moved the story and connected with me so much better than the bloodless/sterile CGI battlegrounds.
+ small but grounding details like the real side-effects of having x-ray vision, etc.
+ CGI well used in finally showing off Krypton
+ Interrogation scene :) (Again small set execution/acting 101)

And not so much:
- for as morally restrained as Superman was(final execution/neck break scene) in choosing to fight Zod, he ended up killing countless people in the near demolition of Metropolis.
Isn't this what someone means when he says before a fight "Let's take this outside[where no one else can get hurt]?"

- The Matrix-inspired(copied) fighting between Super&Zod went on FAR TOO LONG. Was the director purposely trying to outlast The Avenger's final city fight? The noise, confusing CGI props/mechanics, and scattershot camera anchoring just added to the mess.
- Seems almost like a pre-release focus group wanted to see more Russel Crowe; hence the awkwardly retrofitted inclusion of his very, very active ghost persona. lol?

Summary: Toss in a few arty elements from Ridley Scott's Gladiator along with some Matrix-inspired fight scenes and complete surrender of direction to the Producer and CGI Dept for the last half -- voila Man of Steel.

By the way, has anyone seen Pacific Rim? I thought it was pretty terrible, frankly.

It's an okay popcorn flick, pretty enjoyable for what it is. Had fun watching it and I think you can't ask for more, really, when it comes to such movies. It just makes me wish that directors and writers would start adapting some of the more ambitious superhero stories. Personally, I hope one day someone adapts Kingdom Come to movie format. It depicts Superman in the most enjoyable way for me, in addition to being a kick-ass story.

There are so many good stories out there - Kraven's Last Hunt, Killing Joke, The Last Arkham, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse, Torment. Tons more. Lots to pick from, just as long as the main elements would be preserved in transition.

My main gripe with the latest Batman movie, for example, was that it didn't follow the plot of Knightfall closer - it dropped a lot of the elements that made the story so good like the character of Azrael, Batman slowly being drained mentally and physically by Bane by proxy of all the villains he set free, all the intricate psychological drama that interconnects the characters. None of that was present in the movie. Eh.

It's a superman movie. You don't go to McDonald's and eat their burgers without knowing what you're in for.

Whether it was climaxed 'that hard' or not we should leave to the Great Scriptwriters.
After all, it's a fantasy world, which is a bottomless pit for inspiration.
For me a sequel doesn't need to be more of a climax than Man of Steel was.
Just a new storyline and a lot of action will do for me.
I experienced two hours of great fun with the newest Superman movie.
If a sequel is made with the same entertainment level as Man of Steel, imma watch it for sure.
But that's a matter of taste.

E.g. you could wonder whether the Avengers movie can be done better or not. But there's gonna be a sequel on that one, and i'll see it for sure. Even when I die beforehand. I'll be back.
