agree. by making it in the top8, the player has already proven his activity in the faceit cups.

the great final of the season should aim to make the groups as interesting and balanced as possible (by sorting the players by perceived skill, disregarding elo and faceit points).

then again, someone like demon should be rewarded for his effort, having played every cup.

whatever, at least cooller and cypher are not in the same group tho! :D

Maybe it would be possible for future events to try something different/experimental to pick the groups?

For example.. people finishing in the top 2 get to pick players they want to join them in their own group, and the other persons.

How this may or may not have looked this time around...

For this set of players and ranks, then sure that would be fine. Relying on that next season would be a risk.

It is quite possible for dem0n, matr0x, baksteen and twister to finish 2-7-3-8 and evil, cypher, cooller, av3k to finish 1-8-4-5, would those be 'fair' groups? :P

tbh I think yes. I think it's the reward for the players to gain the points. Better have them do the points game in qualifier than in the real tournament like the DH drama about "I don't want to win this match cuz I'd have to play X" some years ago :)

it's not really a reward in any way, just makes everything completely random.
faceit are somewhat lucky it worked cause top players like cypher played a lot this month and not a couple of cups just to qualify from 8th place and 2 weakest players in this top8 matrox&twister have finished 7&8th which kinda balanced it a bit(though looking at the groups A is much stronger)

The groups have come out pretty balanced in my opinion.

Pretty much everyone can win vs one another, be it in group A or B.

Evil pavel cypher sounds stacked to the roof indeed but hey, why would they not reward players participating and getting as many points as possible ? If they want people to signup to these cups every week they better not listen to you ;)

Well, apart from one cup which cypher won, he was not that convincing. Cooller impressed me the most since his return. I am not sure either who between guard and pavel to choose from at the moment. Although personally I'd prefer to play guard because of the playstyle clashes.

Though well, I would have 1/10 odds to win vs evil at any given day, so yeah, the groups definetly get imba as soon as you look for a comparison with me and evil, but the rest of the group is pretty decently balanced...

they can still do that in the later stages of the season, tweaking points a bit. i dont know what makes u think they cant, all the pros have to do is not show up to tweak their score.

besides, not everyone can be around every sunday forever. what if for example rapha plays a few cups but then doesnt have time to play more, does that make him a top10 player or still top3?

i vote for smart adminning, seeing as we do not have the large community and systems in place to make very accurate dicisions.

the only reason everyone seems to think this current system is working great, is because of coicidence that made the groups come out looking good...

I never claimed they can't tweak their scores. What I said is that if players decide to stop playing there is a chance they get overtaken and thus get a lower seed. Of course there is a chance, although slim (as proven this season so far) that you are safe for the position you are in and can't climb, but we can't annihilate every thing.

We can only do so much and with this rule I think we have covered a large part of it. If anyone has ideas to keep players more active then I am more than happy to listen to you.

We are in no way saying that the person who ranks first in the season rankings is actually the best player, all we say is that he is the player who deserves to be in the top position due to consistency, hard work and supporting the community by playing.

The only proof we have now is that it works. We want to reward players, besides their skill which they all obviously have for getting high standings in the cups, for being active, which helps both the community and us.

the way i see it you merely reward consistancy which has nothing to do with ingame skill. this stuff will be a bit 'off' untill all players show up 100% of the time, then u can call it a solid ranking.

the only proof u have is people are playing a bit more, which is great, but offtopic.

whats to say cooller hasnt planned this from the beginning, getting a midseed and knocking out a highseed right from the getgo, tweaking the road to victory to his liking (i know, farfetched, but possible)

just some things i noticed, but im no statistics expert so wont be able to hand over a solid plan. merely trying to create some food for thought :)

No worries for providing food for thought, I'm just giving you an idea of our thought curve and be open about why we make certain choices.

If Cooller has it planned to face higher skilled players than he had to, I can only say it's his choice and if it works out compliments to his brilliance :)

Consistency does have something to do with in-game skill. If you are not a top player, you won't be able to gather points to qualify every single week. It's not like if you finish 9-16th every week you'll gather enough points to qualify. You will need a few top two-four finishes here and there.

It's unnecessary to give additional incentives to play the sunday cups. They have a 100� prize. I'm sure people play whenever they have a chance to do so.

Besides the way it is right now it does not at all favor players who play more often. It merely makes things random. It's actually very apparent in the current situation where I have an absolutely impossible group with the two best players in the tournament whereas I could have had decent chances in the other group. And I only missed the very first cup when I was on vacation.

The only way to actually favor the active players would be to purposely pair them with the weakest players which would be straight ridiculous. Just reseed the playes by skill next time and make groups based on that.

Since we have started the Season numbers have gone up (both in viewers and participants), so it shows that the actual Season does incentivise people, more than just the prize alone.

On your second point, perhaps you are right. Maybe the highest placed player does not get the easiest group due to this system. But we have to set priorities and our priority right now is getting the most players on our platform to play (which also benefits Quake in the end).

I feel if you redo all the seedings, it takes away a lot from the season itself. It's like giving Liverpool a higher seeding in the Champions League, even though Man City won the English league, just because they are historically a better team.

Correlation does not imply causation. I highly doubt that anyone specificly started playing the sunday cups to get into the winter league.
Just as the winter league finals there are a lot of other new tournaments emerging which adds to the percieved competitiveness of the game. Which in turn motivates people to compete. So it does play a part in getting people interested in playing competitive quake. However I believe a stand-alone 500$ tournament with open signups would have had the same effect if you get where I'm coming from.

As far as the second point goes, perhaps we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't feel like it would take anything away from the season. Quite the opposite - it would make it more lucrative for the players because there is no chance you're going to get fucked by the seedings.

We've never done a third place match, and the schedule is tight enough as it is. We are looking for our Season Champion and this is what the entire tournament is about, not for our Season-third-place-finisher. Hence there is no third place decider.

what's the point of equal cash for 3rd-4th place? not only it removes the necessity for 3rd place matchup, but also totally destroys any motivation for showing some good quake for 3rd place contenders. Maybe a couple of relaxed 'just for fun' maps as the best scenario, but it's more likely to be a couple of 'idc' quits after 2-3 minutes.

Personally I hate 3rd place games. They always have an anticlimatic effect, as the suspense that is built up in the semi finals drops significantly in the process. Primarily because they usually come at the end of days filled with games from the morning so both the players and the spectators are way too exhausted.

This just in! 3rd/4th placed players surprisingly placed 3rd and 4th because they got beat by the players that placed 1st and 2nd! How did this awful outcome ever happen? The possibility of not reaching the final wasn't included in the cup details when they decided to participate in the tournament!!! This incredibly unexpected and extremely unfair scenario is just impossible for a human being to get over, isn't it?!

Well wait, there's more! Making them fight eachother to determine who actually goes home with the 3rd place prize just like any other competitive event has done since it's inception, including QL, is downright inhumane!. It would be a complete and total fucking outrage and potentially traumatize them for life, if not kill them instantly!!!

Don't forget to provide them all with some free tissues, prozac, and a 2 week vacation to the bahamas along with their winnings in case they are just overwhelmed with grief after (not) playing "10 hours straight" and going home with only enough money to buy food for an entire fucking month. "quakers" these days, lawl.

Amen to this. That is just the way competitions are: 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Nobody cares about 4th, why should there be any prize for it (unless prizes go down to like 8th place or further...).

If the players cant motivate themselves in the 3rd place game to actually place 3rd, then they dont deserve to become 3rd. That is why there is a 4th place. You know, that place that doesnt get to stand on the gold/silver/bronze podest at the end of a competition?

Interested if agent will actually be getting demon's spot, i can imagine him causing an upset. Honestly I really enjoyed watching him play last Sunday, hektik game vs demos was $$$, he's an ass though and i think he has borderline personality disorder. The whole schedule is subject to change here and there depending on how fast/slow the groupstages will be played and the probability of schedule shift is rising towards playoffs/finals. Are you sure that in case you get to the semis u will show up in time or at least in +/-15-20 min range?

Will be much disappointed in you if you will manage to steamroll through your group and then acquire your personal sweet sexy defloss later that day.

However with me beeing in the second group schedule, I had to be here for 16.30CET at the latest, which was not realistically possible for me.

you didn't do any damage to him, gotta kamikazi HARD when ur out of control vs a monster. Need to do at least do 100 damage for each frag you give up. But your lg is shit and rox all missed, so that is why he ran through you. Of course it takes insane skill to even get him to that level of 9-0 advantage. So we can tell you do have the skill, just probably nerves or something keeping you down.

Also I don't think you have the nerves to play rail style like k1llsen and some others. You missed a lot of rails when you don't have the confidence. If you miss two rails in a row, just quit and use a diff gun, because mentally you would already be defeated by forcing rails and getting even more focused on your aim, and not on the game itself.

You should probably change up your style or something.

After seeing cypher's performance last games it feels to me like that Evil's gold potat @ DHS was kind of cause of actuall top players not really practicing? I mean the whole shootmania hype (strenx, cypher, av3k...) at that times. It's like after cypher started practicing quake for real last days and evil's performance isn't even close to him...
Anyway it feels TOO EASY for cypher now. I mean it's not even like cypher is on the peak on his shape and he's crushing everyone like they are some randoms...

took me a few hours and some missed tourney highlights :< but managed to watch it on my tv using a ps3. its complicated as balls and i dont understand most of it, but heres how i did it:

(Install PMS and set it up if u dont already have it)
- Install XBMC: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/win32/xbmc-12.1.exe
- Start it, navigate to plugins and install TwitchTV
- Search for FaceIt TV in XBMC and bookmark it for easy browsing in PMS
- Install Jumpy see readme+download here: http://skeptical.github.io/jumpy/readme.html
- Start up PMS, go to General Configurations, Plugins, PMS XBMC Plug,
- Click SQLite Video DB, select C:\Users\Kev\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata\Database\MyVideos75.db
- Add the following to C:\ProgramData\PMS\PMS.conf (depending on what is missing or not)

pmsxbmc.db.video = C:\\Users\\Kev\\AppData\\Roaming\\XBMC\\userdata\\Database\\MyVideos75.db
python.path = c:\\Python27\\python.exe

runs pretty damn well on a 42" plasma tv, its postprocessing on the 720p picture makes it pwetty nice!
obviously if the stream lags itl render that lag and send it to the ps3 so its still 100% up to twitch to stay lagfree ^^

I am watching this on my rpi, on my tv.

It requires no modification at all. Simply install OpenElec version for raspberry pi. Then the twitchtv plugin.

Then select the stream in twitch.

Yes, I have the 512MB version and it can do that without any stuttering. You can easily overclock it but there's no need for it just for watching videos because default is good enough.

Seven months in, still don't understand the concept of sound editing and they found out yesterday that when you put a bright light on somebody's face, they're gonna look shiny as hell. Welcome to anything that involves a camera.
They'd make your random local tv channel that broacasts reruns of Frasier and Friends 22hours a day and fill the other 2 hours with weather reports laugh their asses off. That's the only actual problem I have with faceit. Wanna look and feel like it's tv, can't be bothered to check how tv does it.
The industry as a whole doesn't seem to understand that tv's less relevant than streaming nowadays and that they could aim for their own ( actually solid and achievable ) standards instead of doing half assed shit and cutting corners but that's another topic really.

Indeed, we really want to read how russian specs are getting mad pussy with their sisters or whatever the hell they were talking about when they shouldn't even be on the server to begin with.

The specs, be it russian or not, were a nuisance and were promptly removed. This (almost) never happens, but was very prominent in Zotacs. I'm glad faceit gets rid of them when the matches start, I guess they couldn't have predicted that some people will share the password.

They could and should have predicted that. Admining isn't so much about organizing things, it's about getting shit done and plugging all the holes Murphy could poke through. That includes the players and you can't stop password sharing unless you're friends with them and they really don't want to fuck your stuff up or because you're a nazi admin and don't let any of it happen without consequences.

As for the feedback, been somewhere else, done that. Within seconds, shields were raised so high I couldn't see the sun anymore. Might as well get the ball rolling here.

Hey, thanks for the casting today. Since I know you look for feedback I will write my thoughts. Please, don't take the harsh tone the wrong way: I am fan of your work, and of faceit! And I can only guess how hard this job is from the tiny exp I have. I just think you have what it takes and you're in the right spot to step up on a few things, and become a real pro :)

These are three things I thought while watching the show:

- Get your facts straight! Who played against who, what maps are going to be played, what will happen next etc. It does not mean you got to remember, but simply use the appropriate means (prepare some facts before the show and write them down, talk to the admins and make sure you got the information through, write down things as you cast, etc.). This is very important, as the professionalism of the show really goes hand in hand with this.

- If both casters don't know something, don't highlight it! I cannot count the time I heard the exchange "do you know what maps did they pick?" / "Whose map is this?" and the other did not know the answer.

- Work on your confidence! No more I don't know / maybe or whatever. This is your show, your moment of glory, and you will fucking own it! I heard this often goes with acting: you got to create a character that is self-confident, and [add qualities you like], and then pretend you're that guy, so you can avoid anxiety and shit.

I agree with all of those points with the accent on the last one. ddk even if you're somewhat rusty on the duel side of things you can clearly make judgements about what players should or shouldn't do and impose them onto your casting. you know this game well enough to do that and even if you're wrong it doesn't matter, because of the nature of the game. don't be afraid of pauses as well. if you don't have anything to say try to think ahead and analyse instead of desperately looking for the description of current situation. even in quake sometimes there just isn't much going on and you can take that time using it for predictions and suspicions.
oh and get better. you've been sick for some time now and not only it will be beneficial for your cast (which is small potatoes), but you should just get well alltogether. keep up the good work, because the progress is visible.

Don't want to defend anyone here, but czm is probably one of the funniest persons I've ever met, and he totally understands human interaction and plays a lot with it. This may have not come across during that streaming, for reasons I don't know.

yes I agree. I quite like czm as a caster, but the czm-ddk team just wasn't working for me.
Too many times they tried to analyse every situation, instead of just casting the game. A bit too much 'czm, what do you think of that move? How would you deal with this situation?', which ended up in missing out on great actions. It's a great addition to the show to have such a genius casting, but don't overdo it.

To be honest, I missed zoot's enthusiastic shouts.

zoot & ddk is still the perfect mix for me.

I would add that its not mandatory to always talk. Collect your thoughts, and then go.

Also, some ppl mentioned how its not always necessary to state plane things that we see ("he just took rl"), as this is note a radio broadcast:)
(and would emphasize the importance of ingame sounds being set to normal volume lvl. To draw a similar parallel, this is not a football match being casted. To be able to rly spectate with understanding whats going on, we need to hear all the ingame sound cues).

1. You should use that Winter season finale into in the future. Its awesome and gave me chills.

2. Listening to Beats Antique during each break for 7 hours makes me wanna hurt people. Glad you at least changed it during the playoffs.

3. Talking of playoffs, those games hyped me so much... breathtaking. Hope you guys will upload demos.

4. I felt that as time progressed, the chemistry between ddk and czk kicked in, especially during the playoffs. I really hope to see czm casting a faceit tournament again soon. But since both ddk and czm are not exactly full of temperament, Id love them to focus more on analysis and telling interesting background stuff in general. Ddk is so resourceful in this matter it makes me think its a shame hes supposed to do play-by-play casting.

5. Cypher, really? Getting from "rusty scrub" to "sup matrix, im neo" mode in 2 months? This guy is the biggest talent this game ever had.

Awesome cup. Thanks to all FACEIT crew for making this happen.

FACEIT pretty much saved competitive Quake scene and set the higher standards tournaments and production. But now after the recent big money tournaments like Renaissance and 125FPS league, this $500 cup felt a little bit underwhelming and it showed in viewer numbers. The stream peaked at 3444 concurrent viewers. Some regular FACEIT Sunday cups in the past had way more viewers than that (Sunday Cup #22 - 4099, Sunday Cup #23 - 3691 etc). I just think that the season finale deserved a bit more hype.

The first time I heard czm casting was at some IEM. I remember being very impressed by his deep insight as he pretty much predicted every single move that players made. He carried the casting so I was pretty surprised by how silent he was today. Still was glad to see him cast.

Props for sticking closely to schedule. I expected big delays but the whole thing went pretty smooth. Some points I wrote here might sound a bit negative but I really enjoyed this cup. So many sick matches...

I still think 3.5k viewers is a hefty amount for a "dead game" as some like to call it.

Enjoyed the show, some really intense quake we've seen today. Packed with action and sick shots, last second overtimes, some upsets, some mild rage, "ok" casting (would love if someone gave czm a cup of coffee, he just seemed stressed out and tired).

Overall a great event that yet again proves quake is miles ahead of any other Sunday entertainment.

Little to no delays, awesome production and lag issues were resolved rather quickly.

Thanks to faceit, roychez/ins/ddk/nicerdicer/stermy/ the rest of the team and czm for showing up, hope to see him again with more energy and confidence.

Agreed. 3.5k viewers for a online tourney final (and most of the time the weekly cup) while the $100,000 dollar Shitmania tourney was rocking about 800 viewers. Badass.

Hey all, just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone tuning in and for the continuing support, as well as the always entertaining banter in chat :) Big thanks to the players as well, who spend their entire Sunday behind their desk to make sure all games could be played quickly behind each other. They put in a great show!

Big thanks to faceit and the players for making this event happen, to the organizers for kindly offering me the chance to contribute in some way, and to ddk for carrying the bulk of the commentary. I really enjoyed watching all of the games; if I ever came across as bored, disinterested, or incoherent, let me make clear that I meant no disrespect. (Perhaps I should "reveal" that I felt stupefyingly tired most of Sun, having arrived on a redeye from the US on Fri, having slept little since last Tue/Wed, and not usually being one to shortchange sleep.
