Toxicity is so bad it's unbelievable. I should seriously upload demos from playing p0ni yesterday. It goes pretty much like this:

There is no slow strategic playing on that map. If you want to get control back you need to hit some ridiculous bullshit or hope that your opponent fucks up big time.

As long as Quake will have tournaments there will always be too much opinion based map drama bullshit. Dreamhack has that map pool, all players invited are attending Dreamhack, it was the only logical thing to use the same map pool. Deal with it ppl.

its always a good statement in discussions (is this one or just a flamewar) to say that the opponent has no clue what he is talking about. I understand most of the choices of the duel players, because im a decent (but not a pro) duel player myself and played 2,735 duel matches. But nonetheless I am accused of beeing a noob. Well I don't care about "players decisions" and stuff like that. I want an entertaining match, which is close and decided in the last few seconds and includes many frags. I don't enjoy watching the italian football team for that matter, because its fucking boring most of the time. On the other hand I like the russian and dutch football teams, because they play nice and normally they score more goals than italy (or greece for that matter). And for 95% of the non-biased players (e.g. they life in a country listed above) the same oppinion is probably fitting.
You guys talk about "esport" and shit. Well as soon as there is price money involved and a stream is running it is sort of a competition and it should be exciting for the specators. And "lost world" is fucking boring ALL THE FUCKING TIME! Cheers out

First of all, "lost world" can be played is several differents styles, 'ive seen matches with 1 overall score like matches with 16 overall scores; then, it allows a lot of shortcut ( even not using nades -.-' ) and rocketjumps, and you can move very fast even vertically;
moreover, it's not a spawnrape map, so there is the possibility remediate to the errors commicted, that made it very balanced for *smart* players: it's not a case that it is a map in which a lot of peoples wins against strenxie;
the fact that is so tactical makes it more interesting, sometimes, when there is tension involved of who will caught the opposite better and harder, and finally, it's not an all aim map.
I understand tha fact of the shining lighting gun all the times, combined with the rail-rail- rocket- rail is entertaining to watch, but maps like aerowalk or hektick sometimes become a dumb all aim, spawnrape fest.... that is not what quake is inended to be, theres shotmania for that kind of things

I really can't stand av3k's gamestyle vs rapha... Why isn't he playing his game? Why is he so passive? I mean every match in quakelive history he played vs rapha he did that awful style. Didn't he notice that it just doesn't pay off? Just showing him too much respect... he should rush like he usually does and take the frags. Especially now when his aim increased (he had 42% lg on ztn)...

He's so sneaky and he always lacks some last part to win...

Really tired of that "avek is super agressive player" thing .. that's just not true and kinda noobish to say. Yes he was a player in the past that was known for taking a few risks in some situations but for people who don't seem to see it his gamestyle changed dramatically. He's a much more versatile player nowadays and he tends to play with completely different styles vs different opponents.. trying to adapt and playing very smart.

It seems to pay off quite often like in this cup .. btw why are you going to rush rapha? Rapha tends to play a almost flawless kind of game and one of his biggest strenght is defensive game + great positioning.. you most likely gonna get punished everytime.

Please quit calling avek the agro quaker makes me agro.

can't trance slap 2gd on the back of the head when he goes in this mode? or give him a sixpack of redbull, i don't care.

edit: i feel sorry for the guy donating money. props to him, but 2gd going all "doesnt matter, they're gonna +forward and split the money anyway, cba to commentate this" really took the spice out of the final.

I enjoyed watching the games, they were actually pretty exciting. Some of the shots were absolutely amazing. I can think of at least 5 movie-worthy scenes. The participants were all in top form (except rapha), so props to the players.

On the commentary... unfortunately I decided to give some of my non-quaker friends a link to todays show. At first it was good, but progressively it dissipated into nothing, such that during the very nice grand final I was rather embarrassed. The yawning, terseness and off-topic inside jokes didn't really ruin the experience for me, but certainly for those who actually need the game commentary.

Anyway, thanks for organizing this enjoyable tourney and the kittens. I guess, I'll just have to remember only to tell people to watch big lans like dreamhack.

first of all there isnt just one proper way to cast the games..

in my opinion 2gd is havin a fun time promoting the game in a mainstream fashioned style. calipt looks more professional with his ingame analyses etc pp. but i think jay is oldschool enough (shares a lot of experiences with the community)

i enjoy disrepute in tdm. he seems to be really confident..

that's true, but yawning, eating, throwing microphones around and saying at the end of a match 'btw that was a good game lol' is really not the standard that they would like to shoot for. draw the line in the sand dudes. Athough I love the laid back style I think compromise is needed. I appreciate the show, and in the end had lots of mothafuckin' low brow fun, but the studio's possibilities are much bigger than that, so I think it isn't unfair to expect the performance they are capable of. Then again I understand they were tired, so big thanks for putting the show anyway.

I will let Jay himself reply to your feedback if he is up for it. All I wanted to say is that we as a whole apologize for the lower standard of casting displayed today. We are all very tired and worn out due to our Dreamhack preparations for twitch.

I was thinking of not even running the Arena this weekend because of that but I think it would have done more harm than good in the end. Add doing 4 shows a week to that and you can see how exhausting this can get, especially for casters. This is not an excuse for what happened today as it shouldn't have happened, but the only alternative would have been no cup at all and I feel the players themselves got most out of it in the end which makes it still worth it.

TL;DR Sorry, it won't happen again.

ps. at the end of the show the 4G line crapped itself out, I couldn't do much about it. Can't wait to get that proper fiber in come end of summer.

I really enjoyed Twister's commentary during the rising stars tourney; some great insights and you can really get a feel of his perception of the game. his understanding of the game really shines through, I learned a lot just by hearing his commentary, something which I unfourtantly find rare now a days in quake. I really hope he casts some games at dreamhack. Him and rapha maybe?

I actually really enjoyed 2gd's commentary back in the day, but I honestly fell asleep while watching the stream today. I generally do like his sense humor and lack of seriousness, something which i believe is missing in e-sports these days; as for today, it started out in fine-taste but that final just felt like a bad joke.

It's already been said that the casting today was really boring but the same thing happened towards the end of the earlier tournaments aswell. A shame, really, because the games were really good. I don't know if it was more because of the length of the tournament or the fact that the first games were pretty onesided or perhaps a combination of both. In any case a few things came to mind:

-Mappicking for the quarter finals should be sorted out in advance and players should already be on a server by the time the previous game finishes.

-Bo3 semis. It's clear 2gd and fazz don't have enough stamina if you run it with bo5s. Perhaps dont show all of the games if you have obvious rape matchups like avek - weird.

-Change casters sometimes? I realize only 2gd and fazz really know quake but I think if they could take a break for 20mins or so at some point they would have a lot more energy in the long run. Why not let Semmler cast with 2gd for a bit for example and have 2gd explain to him whats going on. 2gd and Semmler seem to work quite well together generally :p

-Tell players to leave when the game is already decided (garbage time). I don't think anyone really benifits of those extra minutes being played out.

-Skype interviews with players seem to work really well. Would like to see more of them perhaps also before games rather than just with the winner.

-Don't eat DURNIG a game, seriously what's wrong with you? At least ask the players to wait.

it's ridiculous, players must decide themselves, when they can forfeit, wihout commentaries even, I didn't expect you could write such thing

I'm trying to get sorted as fast as its possible, could be Trance can just change screen to ingame only after we picked the maps and ready to go. Next time will take care about maps picked for quaterfinals before the show started even.

I think you misunderstood what I mean with the "tell players to leave in garbage time" comment. I didn't mean that you literally tell them during the game that they leave. What I mean is that a lot of players have a stigma that they have to finish the game and leaving midgame is disrespectful to the opponent or something like that. Just tell them before the game that if they think it is over there is nothing wrong with just forfeiting the map and it would actually improve the flow of the show.

The thing with mappicks: Perhaps you should get an additional admin or two to assist you? From admining the Rising Stars cup I know that it is pretty much impossible being present on the server and admining the game (answering players questions, taking pauses etc) and sorting out different issues like servers. You did a very impressive job so far, don't get me wrong, but it could be even smoother.

The last thing: ye I know what the idea is, however at the same time it is a show and providing maximum entertainment to viewers is a higher priority than giving the best experience to the players. Then again I guess that when you are not limited to dreamhack players you will have an easier time creating interesting games only :)

Well, technically you can shorten the maximum possible time...

Mercy Timelimit = 10 mins - (frag difference * minimum time per frag)

So let's say the minimum time per frag is 4 seconds, and there is a 20 frag difference, thats 80 seconds required... so the game can finish if less than 80 seconds are left, ie @ 8:41.

This could be expanded on with some decent formulas to reduce it even further, but this is the bare minimum and a good start.

Although... I really couldn't be arsed whether people play 10 mins or not.

Edit: on second thought this might fuck things up if there is just 1 frag difference, and also you have to take into account that the leader may accidentally kill himself or get telefragged or whatever... so yeah.. disregard that. Keep it at 10 mins and let loser forfeit if he wants, plain and simple.

5 Minutes halves and a deciding 5 minutes game would be better all around . Onesided matches is over sooner and even matches go the full 15 minutes. Better for spectators and casters also with a small break for analysis. It would probably be better matches all around from low level to high with more excitement at the end of each round.

-2GD and his crew have been working and will be working on dream hack for the entire week already, this is one of the reasons why 2GD was very tired.

-There was no possibility to change casters because no one really knows about QL that much and people like semmler were unavailable.(MLG, Dreamhack)

-Garbage time is very situational, comebacks are always possible. Give the players the opportunity to choose.

-Eating, well yeah. If they didn't the games could've gone till after midnight and everybody eats so yeah...

i've watched a lot of the one-week-marathon with diablo 3 of the gd studio where you could see that it's a really tough job to always be on point and funny and edgy and lovely.

i think he's just too fucking exhauted to get his skinbag in front of the camera to excite and entertain us nerds in a never ending story.

A rather excellent match going on and all he could talk about was fucking retardedness of the highest order.

Being tired, having a laugh, and even eating and taking a laid back approach to casting is perfectly acceptable... I'm the first to defend a casters rights when it comes to being a clown... but this time the quality just went down the fucking drains more and more until it just felt plain wrong.

Still... I'll be looking forward to the next Arena with the same enthusiasm as I had before this one... but please don't let it all just crash and burn. You have always been 'can't give a fuck' in a professional manner... this was 'can't give a shitty fuck' in an unprofessional manner.

Sure, but I don't think there's anything wrong with giving honest feedback. 2GD gets a lot of love here, and for good reason, but it won't help him or us if we react exactly the same to his good shows as to his (relatively) bad ones.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the second line. (l understand the idea of someone falling into self-parody, but I'm not sure how it applies here). But don't forget, despite his natural charisma and seemingly 'sloppy' style, even 2GD has to put effort into casting well. There's a balance between 'natural' (i.e. no effort) and 'professional' (fake tv-presenter wankery) that is a lot more fun to watch than either of the extremes.

I understand your frustration. I have been sick with pneumonia and on antibiotics and asthma medicine for 10days. Fucked up lungs/throat +really low on energy from the get go. I just 3 days ago found out that I was supposed to be on this show as well. And I have a very hard time faking excitement as you might have noticed. I'm surprised that almost only you flamed me and everyone else James. Can't say that I will care enough to improve though, it's just not worth the effort for me personally. But if more people have criticism like this I have no trouble stepping down. None offence taken from hearing stuff like this, just refreshing that some people speak their mind.

i think u were fine. it was just the overall mood that was a bummer. besides which u were never the energizer bunny of casting anyway. ur there to provide good insight which is what u do always.

out of curiosity though, there was a definite - god this is so boring and repetitive - vibe to the whole cast. do u feel like seeing the same players in the same mode on the same maps is taking a toll finally? i really feel like we should explore newer maps/modes or given the fact that id controls them, maybe just mix the format for the tournaments up to make it more interesting.

I think that it's hard to get excited about stuff that I have seen for 13 years. When evil, cypher and av3k makes crazy rocketjumps and moves which we doesn't see every game I DO get excited. But the current state of QL doesn't really favor those styles. When I was active I always tried to play so that it was exciting and fun for ME. I reccon that most players play to win. And due to the state of the game, that just doesn't excite me much anymore. Quake duel is just too much about aim raping/not getting aim raped nowadays. For me personally, and I know a lot of people will disagree here; Quake duel should be about out-thinking rather than out-aiming your opponent. If I would enjoy to physically out-perform people in 1v1 I would have become a weightlifter or a sniper or something. The raw aim part of deathmatch duel should IMO be less than 20% of the skills required to be successful. Movement, creativity, awareness and the ability to read your opponent should matter a lot more than just having hand-eye coordination talent.

Like we saw in the final, passivity was the way to surprise your opponent. Initiative should be rewarded more as well. That's why I enjoyed evil the most this tournament. And looking back at it, I am really sad that we didn't decide to cast the 3rd place decider as he even managed to beat rapha.

And I want to make clear that I don't look down at the aim-based players. It's not their fault that the game is what it is. They are just smart to play the way they do because it makes em win games.

To end this drunken and depressed post Swedish fail vs Ukraine rant:
I really hope we get the Reborn project up and running. Because I truly love the deathmatch 1v1 gametype. I just don't know if I love the quake version of it anymore.

I guess that is why I am so open towards giving Shootmania a shot. Although, I would never want it to replace the dm1v1 mode. It's just something new that I think is fun playing and worth not dismissing without giving it a shot. Too be fair, they have patched the game 2 times in 1 week. The have balanced the maps within hours of feedback coming in. If ID software tried even 5% of what Nadeo is doing we would not be having this discussion.

not sure if this is the right place for this discussion, but since its hard to get old vq3 pros to talk about this, i figure i might as well do this here.

what would be your solution to this problem? do you feel like this is caused specifically by the quake live netcode + updated hardware or do you think this is also partly caused by the vq3 gameplay itself? you mentioned on cast that you weren't a big fan of the weapon balance.

to put this in perspective for me, what u say has always been one of the big reasons why i prefer cpm over vq3. (not that i hate vq3 or ql pls dont bother replying if ur just going to call me biased). what i find is that while it isnt harder to hit in cpm it is easier and more rewarding to dodge because of the movement. and while some mistakes do go unpunished because of the flexibility, the dynamicism (hopefully thats a word) simply makes up for it in terms of creating fun.

but im really curious to see what other people think about this issue and whether there are other solutions than just speeding up the game and making +fwd a viable option however u manage to do it.

ps: altho im biased against the whole marketing campaign with the shootmania alpha, i was really curious to see the internal mechanisms in the game, especially the client scripting side. too bad i dont have a key yet.

I think James' Reborn project has me the most excited as well. I mean, let's be honest with ourselves, at least as a Quake community, there is a huge gap in the market for a competitive FPS game. I mean hell, look at all the hype Shootmania is getting... and it looks like shit.

I fully support and love TheGDStudio, and I try to watch as much content as I possibly can, ESPECIALLY the talk show because it is extremely interesting due to the insight from people very deep in the eSport community. I enjoy when you're apart of the Quake casts and I think your personality works well with James when he's on form. I'd rather have James at his 100% best than his 25% worst, even if it means delaying content or reducing it.

All in all, I hope the Reborn project happens because the ideas get me salivating, especially the map making and total community driven ideas. And I think it's a project that can be a huge success.

My suggestion is to add delay to hitscan weapons. Just as q3 had, even if it was a bug or not. It made so that you couldnt hit insane acc's when you where surprised. You have to be able to predict the movement of your opponent even with hitscan.

Go try OSP with low ping. It feels awesome imo. There is simply no way that this will be considered by ID though.

That and NEW maps, like 20 of em.

Problem with all unlagged netcode implementations that I know is that they aim at simulating ping 0 and that only for hitscan. They should try to get q3 with ping 20-25 so hitscan would be usable but harder to use then in ql or cpma.
Getting OSP with ping 20-25 for everyone, that would own:P

Lag compensation on projectiles just makes things fucked up, the tl;dr is basically that the guy on the receiving end has to dodge projectiles and gets popped as if he was the one pinging shit.
No matter how much more fun the game would be, it's utterly retarded to force lag onto somebody. People should stop trying to achieve this "perfect balance" that only works on paper.

The general reluctance of people 'taking the intiative' (as you mentioned evil does) is probably simply due to them mistaking that 'cowardice' for the ability to 'outsmart' their opponents, while of course that style has got nothing to do with being smart at all. It is actually quite conservative and backward and plain boring to both watch and play against. But I guess that as well depends on how you define 'being smart' to begin with - especially when it's about gaining money.

Get a grip! The only reason the criticism here is not more scathing is because of the great things you've done for the game and the great casting you've provided IN THE PAST. It's been well over a year since I remember you doing a professional insightful cast of more than one map before you go off on one.

During really good matches, you were yawning, talking crap and eating ffs. Even for the blow out matches, casters such as Zoot or Disrepute etc even after 15hrs of casting would probably have been focusing on the losing player to see what they could do to make a come back however unlikely. If you're tired, take a break. A non commented stream would have been better.

Your attitude was disrespectful to the viewers who were really interested in the matches and disrespectful to the players who were giving their all.

Please give us back the 2GD we love next time, otherwise go cast some Shootmania because Quake only deserves the best.

And even if I as one of these friends had never arranged such a meal, I would still be justifiably outraged at having my meal spat in.

He soon was joined in the bashing by many other bloodsuckers, scroungers, stooges, freedloaders and bootlickers alike of all kinds, who happened to live in JH-ost as well.

I, too, was disappointed in the quality of the casting this week, although, I can't say I didn't enjoy the show. 2GD managed to crack out some hilarious jokes even in his tiredness, also Fazz, but the overall sluggishness of the show just wasn't good. I especially disliked the commentary at the beginning of the finals, which wasn't about the game at all, and because of that I couldn't get myself "into" the game as much as I would like.

I understand that the cast was tired, and tired because of the big preparations for dreamhack, but I partially believe that the real reason for being so tired is the unhealthy lifestyle. You know... smoking cigarettes, weed, beer, mcdonalds and pizza, sugary drinks, bad sleep schedule, partying, no exercise... that kind of stuff doesn't do any good for a person's motivation and energy levels. I might be way off here, but that's the impression I have got from the shows, and it's not any of my business really...

Also, not streaming the Evil vs Rapha game for third place was disappointing, it's not something we get to see every day, and Evil was playing awesome. I guess it was for the best though because of time and tiredness issues. Link to the demos?

This was superb tournament. I haven't seen so many quality matches in one tournament since DHW.
I don't think that you need so much bashing. Commentary was great as always when you were concentrated on game and later interview was hillarious - I love Av3k's interviews :-)
Maybe you should consider skipping half of the games in first stage of the tournament next time. Or cast them from demos depending on the outcome.

First off, I am a humongous fan of 2GD (and the GDStudio in general), and I do mean "humongous" in the sense that I am physically very large. Having said that, his commentary was slightly off today.
For me the problem is not that he is drinking during the show, eating and talking about dildos - you can make fazz wear a strap-on dildo on his head next time for all I care, just as long as you keep focused during the games.
This is the first time I have been even slightly disappointed in 2GD's performance, and I think one bad performance out of a hundred is pretty decent. I just hope it was because of tiredness, and not a lack of interest, because he kind of seemed unentertained by the games.

bad luck there but I don't think it should be about who calls it first. if it was it doesn't make much sense to even mention the competition on the show, which would be terrible from a marketing pov. also not everybody can keep up with the hardcore gaming sites where this info is announced.
obviously somebody who guessed it after the finalists were already decided shouldn't win though, don't know if that was the case this time around?
