i think its harder to do a RJ on dm13 from RA to shaft YA...so you can make another RJ right away..you know ..that place that is a spawn as well.

I meant RJ directly from RA to the platform with rl and 50hp bubble. :)
it's as hard as the rj on ztn from the ground in the middle of MH and RG (where shards are placed) to RA.

Both of these RJs are very hard to do, but they're possible.

true. these nadejumps are master-able though. they come in handy too, for example when your opponent kills you, runs into LG room (or another room), you spawn at RA, take it, take GL, do the jump and u can cut him off anywhere

This garbage would not work against anyone remotely decent, which when you consider the map/game in question is 10 years old, there's a good chance of meeting that very person.

I'll take the jump pad, collect the SG, and the extra 3 shards and have an extra 55 armour and 15 (the move seems to use 15 health and 40 armour) health and not subject myself to being shafted to death in an open space with a lavepit below and optimum spawn rape potential.

That's a nice prologue for your autobiograhy but I think it needs to be a bit longer.

I'm not trolling I'm making a genuine point, the move will hardly ever be used because its dangerous and you can save 15 health and 55 armour + SG and more cover by going the jump pad or rocket jumping. Not to mention you can't hear shit from so low down on the map.

If your stupid ass wants to do that in game carry on, and when you're LG'd into the lava while giving the opponent superior spawn rape potenial then carry on.

Keep your head up, the dole cheque is on its way.

They are right. You are in fact a moron.

Often on DM13 it is advantageous to RJ to upper level, even if he has a LG, just to not give away yellows and positional control. If he already has a LG it requires a stack considerable larger than his. You will lose a lot of it, but same goes if you dont jump up.

Let's say mega is up and the enemy is at top tier. He can then rain rockets down, do damage and delay you enough for him to take yellows. In that case you might as well have been better off sacrificing the armor to begin with and kill him before he capitalized on his position, and then restack yourself afterwards while he spawns.

It's a situational jump that can be nessesary even against good opponents. Obviously if you have to do the jump up against the enemy, then Baksteen's nade jump allows you to do damage with shaft just like you saw.

Coming up with something new and mostly ineffective is easy, go and spam nades on some maps and calculate the velocity potential, you'll see hundreds of combinations that you've never bothered to look for before because you've always looked for the most effective things and things like this are not it.

Honestly, without trying, you would probably find dozens, upload a demo of you doing it once against someone, keep the failed attempts quiet and you get to look like a boss.

But the special ones will know the difference between a gimmick and real innovation.

I am one such player, so I cannot be happy for this.

He isn't saying he could, his point is completely different and I agree with him. Things like this are gimmicky and are the sort of thing you can pull off once before everyone is aware of it and it becomes useless. As a method for reaching the upper part of the map without a rocket jump it holds some value, used like it was in this video it can only work once. It's the sort of thing you should practice and pull off one time only, in a huge game, and absolutely stun everyone and maybe win what would become an all time classic game just based on that one amazing move.

yes but you could say that about every other move in quake as well. if your opponent knew what you're gonna do before you do it ofc he's gonna be prepared and rape you. but the reason why ppl don't play absolutely perfect games is because they make mistakes, they get caught by surprise etc.

there are countless examples / demos of "normally dumb moves but under the right circumstances brilliant attacks" that are far easier to pull off than this grenade jump. i think it's just about the right context; so yea, i agree with your last sentence but i disagree that this move is useless once everybody knows about it.

this is highly situational tho. being aware of an odd but possible move by your opponent is not the same thing as expecting him to do it EVERY time. so i wouldnt diminish the value by calling it a mere gimmick. a gimmick would some sort of plasma climb to grenade to rj combo which would be next to impossible to do in a real game. this is very much doable and depending on the situation very much surprising.

ps: i have to admit the fawning does become annoying after a bit. also lets stop saying that this is a new move on a 10 year old map. it isnt. it wasnt possible in the q3 version because of the location of the tele exit. not that that makes it any less creative, the map in its current version still has been around for a while. just saying.

The things Avek does are unexpected with little to no warning. A grenade jump to attack someone is unexpected once, but beyond that you can always see and/or hear the grenade there waiting to pop the guy up. Every game is complicated, with lots of aspects... you can neglect bad aim by good positioning, lack of power in tennis by smart movement on the court...

So you are saying that every single player has trained his abilites in every single task he's doing regularly to such an extent that he has reached his personal limitations and can't possibly improve any more? Is this some kind of joke? Are you even aware of the kind of bullshit claims you are making?

The most obvious explanation why 2 guys aren't equally good at a task is that one of them has put more deliberate practice into it.

You still didn't explain how 'personal limitations' would lead to aim being 'untrainable'. If anything, personal limitations would mean that aim is only trainable to a certain extent.
But for this limitation to be meaningful, you'd have to establish that everyone has (been) trained to his maximum abilities. In Quake, where professional training doesn't even exist, this surely isn't the case.

I'll bet you anything that agent has put much less effort than strenx in systematically training his aim. Rapha just recently had much better aim than strenx on LAN (remember that toxicitiy match?), so even rapha isn't a valid example for 'personal limitations', either.

Yes, his opponents usually doesn't aim as well like him, but that is because they don't want to use such a low, unfittable sensitivity; rapha wouldn't be so fast running around the map, so reactive; cypher, for example, has an accuracy only little lower than strenx's one, but with his sens could aim like him for sure, and still having a better timing/nerves/map positioning choices.

also used in correct situation this nade jump is better than rj, because you can shoot immediatly any weapon you want. you can't do it often, but in the right circumstances it's a very cool move to throw your opponent off.

it's got nothing to do with timing.

duck and rocket the floor beneath you get less than 50 damage.
get a rocket beside you from the enemy probably results in 70 damage.

i'd assume same goes for grenades.

It won't becuase....

A) When you're down below you can't hear or really see what's above on the top platform.

B) You give the opponent several seconds warning with SFX of the nades.

C) If you bounce of fthe nade upto platform you run the risk of being knocked off and down into the lava, while opponent has optimum spawn rape potential and positional advantage.

D) you lose out on at least 40 armour (55 with shards) and 15 health, the smart money will go up the jump pad and collect the SG on the way.

e) Most good players won't come out to play without an LG or RL.
A RJ is more controlled, quicker accurate.

dm13 is a low scoring game of cat and mouse among good players. No good player will start playing a lotto unless the game is over or they know they can't lose.

Those are 5 constructive points, you've not put any.

You seem to think that if a move has a surprise element it has a strong point, yes it does, but not when everytime you use it you generate other risks which would not be there if you did not use it, especially when it involves losing 40-55 armour and seriously risking messing up a pretty tricky nade jump which can often land you in the lava if you do not get it perfect whic his more than possible as I have seen pros mess up much simple jumps., not to mention the several other bad risks by using this.

The cons outweigh the pros. That's what you don't get, and in your attempt to defend the move, you allow me to give it more exposure and ruin its element of surprise even more :)

Its a big loss for you and your crappy move all round really.

The same applies to this.

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO NOT GET and its a higher level of logic that COMES AFTER your point which you REFUSE to evolve becuae you can't.

You want to take stupid pot luck moves probably becuae you can't innovate beyond gimmicks.

Gimmicks do not win games, if they do, they cost you more than they win in the longrun like pretty much everything in life.

I've already done some nade jumps from that platorm to the higher one, though not that one coming off the teleporter, it's a nice move though, the context for using it was perfect :)

EDIT: actually gonna try and see if I can pull that off aswell, it looks really cool :O. Can imagine if you're spawning to RA at first spawn and want to get to rl fast and control the higher ground from there on ;D

Did this, sometimes it works out perfectly. The problem is, though, often when you first-spawn at RA, you don't hear where your opponent spawned. If he spawned at plasma for example, you have insta control of the map. However, if he spawns at LG he will probably run to mid map just as you finished your nadejump up, now things look really bad for you.

if you didnt have 125fps with ur crappy cpu, you could simulate 125fps movement (as movement used to be depended on the amount of fps you had)

so doing a bridge2rail with 40fps was next to impossible because u werent able to jump for enough. with pmove_fixed u could do the jumnp regardless.

there is indeed one spawn at LG but its highly unlikely it happens (many more initial spawns are possible)

and then again, you have plenty of time between spawning -> taking ra -> taking gl -> firing a grenade -> go to the teleporter, that you can figure out wether it'd be a bad idea to take that nade and to make the jump.

So yeah I think it remains a plausible start, but that is obviously strictly to be used under the right circumstances (eg, the enemy has already dropped for the MH or spawned at MH and went bubbles, etc.

If the guy went for rl -> mh -> bubbles, he'll gain an obvious advantage unless you are able to make that jump to rl, giving you plenty more solutions depending on what your enemy plans to do (which is probably then to go get the remaining ya's/lg...)

Had them in goldeneye and perfect dark 10 years ago, they would ruin the game becuase quake is fast, the last thing you want is to tip toe around, you would be better off with some kind of secondary function of the GL, so you could plant a grende and set its timer.

Hopefulyl with some kind of trade off, the longer the fuse, the more ammo it costs you etc.

So you could could potentially place an exploisve when you know the MH is about to spawn, could cause all sorts of mind games with timing etc.

But you won't becuase you have have very little visual and audio warning becuase you're at the bottom of the map and the move has an alarm bell on it 2-3 seconds before it works by using the nades and its quite fiddly so its quite easy to mess up the nade jump which when you come out of the teleporter, which can put you in lava if you mess it up especailly under the pressure of a real game.
This is much harder than using nades to get RA on ZTN.

You're better of coming out the teleporter, going up the jump pad.

It takes about 2.5 seconds longer. (nothing on a map this campy)
For that you lose ZERO health, grab a SG, replensih your health and 9/10 you'll have an EXTRA 55 armour for it. At the very least 40 extra and have an escape route.

No matter how much of a surprise the move will be, those are the risks you take every time you use it.

I'm not saying its utterly useless, I'm sure of the duration of its use, it will probably cause you more harm than good.

I didn't like the move as I felt if you did not have a full understanding of the game it would do more harm than good.

I know lesser gamers would take a gamble on it, so to ruin its one good thing I set out to give it exposure so the element of surprise would no longer exist, or people would think more about the move to come to the same conclusion i did.

It's not exactly a move that is used every time RA is taken every time dm13 is played.

Therefore your exposure of something that is done so infrequently really doesn't mean shit. People will still be keeping their eye on the player and not crap that's on the floor that they think is being aimed towards them.

This isn't some revolutionary move that will change dm13 games for ever, it's something that will probably continue to be used <5% of the time and it's unlikely that anyone will care about that grenade sitting on the ledge until they've been victim to that move more than a handful of times.

The frequency of the move is not the issue.

Its the fact that the move is stupid and needlessly risky EVERYTIME YOU USE IT.

And becuase the move is something players will use so infrequently, its a formula which = FAIL becuase players will never be comfy using it 100% of the time and the consequences for failing it are usually hitting the side of the ledge and falling into the lava.

I have seen pros miss moves in game easier than this, what makes you thing the average nobody with 30% less skill perfomfing a move several times harder is a recipe for success?

I never prescribed the move to people who aren't competent players.

If one is going to use such a move, then there is always going to be an element of risk involved. Much like there is an element of risk in everything you do on Quake - because you have to take in to account how the opponent will react to EVERY decision you make.

I feel embarrassed reading your posts. You lack such a huge amount of knowledge on more or less everything you post about.

It doesn't matter, even a expereinced players will be at risk.

This isn't like any trick move in the game that people ever use in duel. Its much more fiddly and carries a large risk of death everytime you mess it up, and its easy to mess up. BECAUSE<<<< you'll use it so infrequently. CAPACHE?

Feel free to compare it to one if you want?

Yet I'm the one with a BAFTA in game design and you're the amateur on a hardcore quake forum whose been here 7 years less than me...

Agreed on the "FTW" comment - the move got a frag, that can't be denied. I think the take-away from this argument is "assuming you're not an idiot, it's much better to have this trick in your repertoire than to not have it."

Yes it can becuase you have no prior idea or data how many times he's tried and failed overall. You're very short sighted and instant result based. OMFG it worked in one game when it was new and the other guy did not even know it was possible. FAIL.

The likelyhood is the move will do you more harm than good in the longrun, so you if you want to add such flawed idea to your repertoire then be my guest.

No its not becuae if you do not have it, then at least won't attempt stupid moves for mostly small gains.

What do you guys think about that one, huh?

Honestly i tried this Nade Jump from Baksteen and i got it on my 8th try. And the Nade Jump on this video i posted is impossible for me, I tried it over 50 times. And thats because it takes so much more skill. Nevertheless baksteen did a great job if he figured it out by himself!
