Australian citizen Frazer "Fraze" Hockley has been living in Europe for the past 3 moths, since the last Dream Hack Winter competition in 2011. Fraze has been staying in the United Kingdom with his girlfriend, and been practicing a little bit of a duel in his time over. As he was known in Australian as a practice fiend he has been living up to reputation playing European duelers such as zsx, madix, GaRpY, k1llsen and strenx, just to name a few.
He has been more then happy with his progress while in Europe and is interested to compete in any big International Quakelive competition soon.
What would you say are the biggest differences from playing Australian opponents to playing European? Map selection? Skill level? Decision making? Aim?
I think the main difference vs your average skilled opponent is they will generally specialize in one map so they will be able to beat u on one map even if they are not the greatest all-round player, which is obviously a good thing so u can learn to work on one map at a time, and try to play that alot vs a certain player. I find in aus, you are either good at most of the maps or good at none and ok at ztn ;P. Having said that i also think Aus is not as far behind Europe as people would have u believe and our top level players are quite good!
1 of the 3 times they played on t7 and you pick the game he lost the most by? The other two times were 9-4 and 12-4 so I don't really see you're point except that you're an idiot troll ??

I didn't make the video to spite K1llsen. Where as Dede did? So the reasons for making the video were completely different, thus making it an idiot troll. Besides i'm sure getting raped by the worlds number one online dueler is nothing to be ashamed of anyway (Strenx)

None of these 60 duels includes a win against anyone really good, though. I'm not sure where you see a 'timeline of improvement' after the match(es) against Sc00t from 1 week ago. ;)
edit: To be fair, winning 50% of his matches against Sc00t and Garpy isn't bad by any means. Implying that he drastically improved since then is a bit optimistic though.
It's okay, I'm sure he's one of the many, many people on ESR who have been playing for twelve years and have never been anywhere near as good as any of the people they so often criticize.
It's just a game. Fraze is just a player. Pointing out that he is not as good at this game as other players is just an indication that you need to go the fuck outside.
Played him once a couple of times in the middle of the night and I got raped so hard :(. Amazing aim and dodging (or maybe I was just tired as fuck and didnt hit anything :D).
Wanted to see him in zotac because there he had the opportunity to play cypher, ash etc.
Fraze... What's a fraze? Sounds cute, I want one! And it has to be blue and expensive and and well mom and dad, I will tweet about your fucking cheapness otherwise! *hugs and kisses* /Melissa
mickzero5: "want me to try and see if fraze can play one game before he leaves?"
dem0n: "sure"
mickzero5: "hmm he says he has no time, has to pack stuff for flight :/"
dem0n: "alright :)"
5 minutes later, fraze playing strenx 7-8 duels in a row
haha i know i feel bad :< mick was like oh u can play demon, then i was like eh nah wanna pack and shit! then he said OH FUCK RIGHT NOW STRENX WANTS A GAME ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY HOLYSHIT FUCKBATMAN and i said ok! hah turned out i had more time than i thought :<
Np man as I said above I have no hard feelings for that. I enjoyed watching them duels though, but faggot strenx decided to stop playing when you left :(((
? ;loads of people hate the maps, the only reason u like them is all u dop is +back so they suit u, so ur basically doing the same thing as me only they are shit maps, and the maps i like and am better at are fresher and are the way forward for quake live
first of all, accidentaly plussed you just now (just woke up and thought it was a reply button)
anyways. now you're changing your words again. I don't care if alot of people hate the maps. They're GOOD maps. if they were bad, like you suggested earlier, they wouldn't have been played for 10 years.
But I'm not suprised u only like maps with lowest brain involvement. pew pew
I totally agree about dm13 and ztn.
Just because a map is boring ( =not easily understandable ) to spectate, doesn't mean it's bad.
Maybe it's just too difficult to understand, but the more tactics a map allow, the better it is.
I don't care if someone wants a frag every 5 seconds: go watch COD and CS, then ( respect for cod and cs).
well think, if there was only 1 map, obviously everryone would be good at it, then new maps came along, people would play that old map even if the others were better, and the same principal applies, people play the maps as they are good at them, if the maps were reversed and say tox and hektik were OLD AS FUCK maps, then people would cling onto them, regardless of how good it was compared to the new maps.
lol makes no sense. you claiming hektik and tox are as good as ztn and dm13?
also i never played q3, and started playing ql when furiousheights was released. so ZTN and DM13 were new to me. still I learned them cause they are awesome
he makes perfect sense. dm13, and ztn have become "so good" not because of design, but because people have played them for years so strategy has developed to this point.
2 noobs who are running around ztn having never played it before wont produce the same quality game as two pros who have played it for 10+ years. the maps themselves don't make the matches funner, more entertaining, or more interesting.
a good example of this is dm13 last year actually. the strategy around the map was to play very defensive, which resulted in long, ot filled, 2-1 or 1-0 games as evidenced by the games last year. this year, since the hitbox increase, people have figured out that you can be much more aggressive and we see higher scores more often than lower scores in competitive play.
yeah the reason being noone likes maps they are bad at :D also i am by no means a terrible ztn player i have over 2 thousand duels on the map (only map i played for first year of dueling) and also just cause 2gd says it doesnt mean anything, in that vid avekk said he didnt want the map pool to be changed, whether that means he likes ztn or not, he didnt want it in at the time (might have been just didnt want it changed) but either way
Of course. You simply cant win, at high levels, if u can't/don't use the rocket launcher; but t7 is a map in wich more than in dm13 the hitscan aim is crucial; also in dm13 there are way more places for ambushes and way more moving tricks and rocketjumps possibility.
This allows the "brain players" to dominate in dm13 much more easily than in t7.
thats simply as there is no railgun ;P not because it definitively favours brain, imagine say t7 without rail, it would be more about camping and setting traps and hence u could say a more 'brain map'
.....for this reason, sure, and also for others: it is more "compact", with many different ways to escape from the different situations, and it has a lot of powerups, that allows a player more good to control the items to charge a player with a lot better lighting aim and still win.
Also, there are a lot of different locations from to shoot safely and run away, the rocket/plasma/ grenade spam fire is very useful, and last but not least the rocket jump technique is CRUCIAL in this map, like others skilled moving tricks, that allow to control the map even with a worst aim.
Hi, I'm a Croatian living in Croatia. Wanna do an interview with me? I haven't played any duels, or ever heard of frazey, but more then willing to go to lans.
Probably, but this sorta thing is pretty interesting for us Aussies who respect the many top-tier Euro players but have very little contact with them.
There's not a lot happening in the Aussie QL scene, so anything slightly interesting, such as fraze having a close game with killsen, or Dandaking / Ventz going to Quakecon is a decent news day for us.
Franky, we're lucky we even have someone like Mick05 who can be bothered to proudly post this sorta stuff on ESR from time to time.
I think that ztn is dispendable from a playing perspective or "oldschool" spec perspective.
The fact is the way the map is built and the amount of years it has been played.. every angle and tactics have been exploited in the map and it doesn't allow one to be very creative because of the map structure. So.. if your a solid player you will find it kinda boring since you can predict almost every move and every kill.
The only [+] is for the "newschool" player, since the map is so overplayed in pubs they enjoy watching it since they play it everyday and they don't have that insight to predict whats going to happen.
About dm13 and i personally like the map, i think it's a must in a mappool since we don't have any other strategic map like this.
If people or id created a similar gamestyle map but different (much more exciting) i would gladly love a change.. but the thing is there is none and we need balance.
I feel it's a really good map to have in a final where both players are really similar and they want to outthink the opponent in order to win a decision.
It's really nice map to spec imo (for high lvl players) since you can actually be surprised by the amount of skill and brains pro players have .. and i believe pro players like to play this kind of maps coz they are not random or you will hardly lose because of a bad initial spawn.
New school players might not enjoy this because in some games you only see 3 frags with 10 min overtimes =( .
It's just the way people want to see quake .. and my opinion is we need balance.
Too many "hektiks" will look like a ca fest.. too many "dm13s" will make the game so boring to watch people will go watch steven seagals movies.
So i believe we need both.. but .. ofcourse.. what we need is to maintain balance with a bunch of new and exciting maps.
So don't drop maps in order to put other style .. just create new!
Map pools should have like 2 fast paced maps, 2 slower maps and one in the middle like T7. Having said that players like rapha and cypher can still force a slow game on any map. :3
EDIT: look at the current pool. Aerowalk, Hektik, Toxicity, Lost World, Furious Heights. Theres 3 fast paced maps, 1 slow and 1 in the middle. No wonder cypher has been beating rapha recently :P
