Looking at the teams you should just call it a div1 opencup in future, its not reall a EuroCup anymore :-(

There you are wrong, at least if I understand your logic, perhaps I don't :)

These are the current best teams that are playing, therefore this is the highest division in QL TDM right now. Players quit, are temporary inactive, might come back, or not. This is the highest competition right now though. Therefore the name should not change because of this reason, only if CB decide that another game would take it's place.

Time for the new players to set the standard!

The standards set by the current "EC" teams aside from one or two clans wont ever be as high as what was previously set.

If you think i'm wrong fine, its my opinion and i'm entitled to it.

When i think EuroCup, i'd like to think of teams at the top of the game, not teams left at the top of game because others couldnt be bothered to make the effort.

well they shouldnt remove EC.. its like a football division, the skilllevel is changing.. i mean what if topclubs like barcelona and real madrid be shit in 5 years.. CL skilllevel will go down ..

Perhaps i view it differently because i remember some of the teams and skill levels that used to compete in it during Quake3? Dunno, its just my view on the matter. I certainly feel the bar has dropped low enough to validate my suggestion but it seems it isnt shared by many.

I dont feel my skill level personally has changed that much since Quake3 to QuakeLive and if i look back through some of the teams who competed i really wouldnt have fancied my chances against them whatsoever, we're talking teams such as SK, Unmatched, QPO, IC, 4K, UNR, aAa, p1mps, All*, Deeg/Regen, iron, rush3d, FOE and quite a few more. Yes some of these teams had players from other teams listed but the fact remains, the skill level was extremely higher in these teams than is currently on show except one or two. The player base has obviously gotten smaller but we have a lot fewer stars participating online now.. as has already been mentioned.

Perhaps it would be nice for the next EuroCuo if a few more of the players listed above could make an effort to participate and make it great again :-)

Basically for our TDM/community we need these people to also take part in some online tournaments for the growth/interest, but like mentioned above, what else to do than play with the current teams. I'm sure many of these teams will show up/start playing when DH announces their tournament officially, and when we get closer to that date, but it would be welcomed if they also played online more often for the mentioned reasons.

So true. It would be nice from top teams to join online cups as well. But unfortunately they won't so we have to play like this.

It seems that top tdm players are only interested by price pool and money because none of them are playing in online cup.

It's sad for QL and tdm because these players are necessary to promote tdm. Thanks to 4K to still be there, otherwise it would be very sad

We decided to drop because we are going to be short in people very soon. Recruiting was not an option as it would have lost what made the lineup EC worthy imo.

Then these people (or ALL who still play quake for this reason) should get jobs! :)

I've been playing Quake(s) 12 + years and i still love it!

I've played online and on lans since 1998 and still enjoy it. The issue here would be that some players only seem to play when there is a lan tournament with pocket money, so why do they play for this, and not at all online? They should not play at all then if they don't enjoy it? But yeah, hard to set yourself in other peoples shoes, and I'm not saying they don't have valid reasons either, I guess I'm just trying to be optimistic.

Part of the issue is also that if we would have a very strong online community, then there is also more chances for growth and more lans, these things go hand in hand.

I have played quake games just as long and enjoy it today just as much as i did from the very first frag, i couldnt ever imagine only wanting to play when it involved money or prizes or some special event. I play this game because i enjoy it and i enjoy the people i play it with.

The list of people above in the first comments, most of them are going to be attending DH in some shape or form i'd imagine, i have already heard of some stuff regarding teams being formed, re-activated etc. Its a shame they don't realise that when the online scene becomes too quiet, the LAN providers will drop QuakeLive TDM and then there will be nothing.

Online play has a lot of downsides. The excuses or paranoia involved come from the following things: Ping, cheats, fear of becoming known as an online hero (juvenile? even though he's a very good player, he's still disrespected by some of the community/trolls), threat to reputation when losing to a "lower status" team. Online events and play isn't prestigious either. There's an underlying nihilism attached to playing online, suggestive of it being pointless, as even if you become a good player, you're auto-classed as either: a cheater, pingwhore, or only able to play on your home setup/not a good lan performer/online hero.

So yeah, there's a lot of reasons to just play practises online before events rather than get involved with the shitfest that is "the community". :(

Which is just sick :) Beating the best online deserves some credit. This is the kind of mentality we need to get rid of if we want our scene to grow! I'm serious :)

And it's a vicious cycle. I personally get less interest in participating in the cup if the best players aren't participating.
I mean no offense/disrespect to the invited teams but this feels like an old div1 OpenCup than an EuroCup and the glory of winning the whole thing just isn't there anymore. Not to mention the fact this league has been ran so many times aswell have also an impact on the interest in the long run imo.

That's not the reason why I'm not participating, will be already busy enough with TDM and CTF in the HoQ leagues and the preparation of the dreamhack, just saying that's how I feel about it.

I doubt anyone plays tdm for the cash price. The price at dreamhack was so low that only first place could cover your travel and living expense. And it was still pathetic low, would have earned more collecting bottles for 3 days... Its down to lack of motivation and not really wanting to play...

So why were you motivated to play at DH (you said it wasn't because of the prize money), but you aren't motivated to play in CB?

That's the interesting question, and you didn't answer it. I'm still pretty sure it comes down to the money and prestige that's involved in a LAN tournament compared to online cups.

Motivated to play at DH because I wanted to try such an event / see the metsu/DK players. Doubt I will ever play at such an event again. Not down to the people involved, everyone did a fine/ok job at the event. But playing under such circumstances was epically bad.

To any of the players listed reading this, you should seriously consider how many more LAN events you will get if the online signups stay/get any worse than they are already.

Good point. If we have a really active scene online and all the top players compete then we have more chance at getting more LAN events, or cash prizes for online cups. We would also see the general level of Quake improve thus making it EVEN MORE enjoyable for spectators!

If I was good like them. I wouldn't mess around with those cheating online heros nether. Get a decent anti cheat and we will see them back.

no, i was trying to say that your "7-8 teams of lan-proven TDM players" do not necesserily exclude the hackers, as proven in the past.

your assumption that those who eventually go to a lan or two have no intention of cheating (and vice versa, being an online hero isn't equal with being a cheat) is wrong, sadly enough.

Play didn't even apply for the Eurocup, why shouldn't they want to compete in the OC?
