Cypher said some interesting stuff about this during a DH interview, and this facebook-status proves him right.

No I mean his statement about Stenxes mindset towards professional gaming.

He is ready to win major Titles skillwise, but he only devotes 50% of his mind to Quake Live the other 50% are filled with school, parties and making music, so he is not ready to be the best when it comes to Quake. He only is one of the top players but he will always loose to people who are devoted to the game completely like rapha, cooller, Cypher or Av3k.

I'm only summing up what Alex said in a interview, altough I agree with him I'm not in the position to judge about such stuff, but this statement form Strenx proves Cypher's judgement quite well.

Oh they do :). As soon as he does not get support from his team, he quits, because it is too difficult (read lazzy) to find another sponsor. And even if he really would not find any he could pay the stuff himself (or half of it, cuz I don't think that fnatic would not say yes if they only had to pay a part of the costs) and train for the tournament. As stated by many before he has the potential to win tournaments but what's holding him off is his mindset (said by Cypher and Cooller). So he simply takes the easier route and says "Ah, no need to bother, I'm not getting paid the expences and since I won't win, why should I go anyway?".

If the same thing happened to Cypher or Av3k they would search a way to still get to QuakeCon even if they don't have the chances to win the tournament because of lack of training or other stuff. They are going for the tournament not that much for the money, while strenx sure goes for the competition but only if he gets everything payed.

It's perfectly normal that he's upset, I'm sure he's not going to stop playing completely. He said he'd stop playing duels after he got beat by cypher at dreamhack, same thing. Finding another sponsor in <2months, even for a player like him, is not as easy as many would imagine, I believe.

Again I'm working with the things other proplayers said about his mindset atm, and with the overall appereance he and other players had during the years. Strenx for me still has this whiney, bitching attitude, while Cypher for me is someone who really loves the game and the competition and would do anything to be at big events.

strenx gave us really good moments, it's a shame that he is not going to quakecon. Would be nice if he could get another sponsor, maybe he could join stermy, or get fatal1ty paying his trip...

To be honest they probably were tired of his average results. His counter performance during dreamhack probably didn't help.

You can't really blame fnatic for not sending him to quakecon, and you can't really blame him to start losing interest in the game either.

It's like saying that Andy Murray in Tennis is a bad player because he's often losing to the three same players while being always close to win a title/be in finals.

Strenx is still better than 99.9% Quake players. Even if you are this good it's not enough for an organisation like fnatic. They shouldn't let Cypher go to srs in the first place, but then again no one knew that only 4 players (cooller, cypher, avek, rapha) will be grabbing Quake titles throughout its tournament lifespan.

And know they prolly know that Quake after Qcon is pretty much dead, so I bet they're thinking of abandoning the squad completely. It's not smart business-wise to keep them in the team, sadly. Quakecon didn't help in that regard announcing tournaments very late either (flights are shit expensive now).

I completely agree with you, first of all I did not say he was a bad player, actually I regret writing "average results" since it's obviously not what I meant and is not an accurate representation of his results. When I was speaking about "average results" I was thinking about fnatic's point of view, they probably don't except less than 3rd place when they sponsor a player, which you summed up pretty nicely when you said "Even if you are this good it's not enough for an organisation like fnatic".
Furthermore I think the Murray comparison is pretty much spot on, but since tennis awards a lot more money it's of course a whole different story.

yes quake is now officially dead.

The Quake community hasn't show itself to be politically savvy. Third-party tourney organizations have no real power. They're middle-men. They're not even necessary. The vital components are:

1. Players
2. Audiences
3. Developers
4. Sponsors (although, sponsors are also unnecessary, if you use some form of pay-per-view)

If players keep playing, the game will survive. The only difference in terms of third-party tournaments is how much money 1, 3, and 4 can make.

If you saw him live, you knew how passionated he was about the game, and maybe still is to some degree. The problem is probably like mentioned by various other users here, that there are other things in his life to strive for and also other things you can enjoy just for fun. But that´s only a wild guess.
