Another way we think of it is that there are a class of players who will never pay us a dime, for a variety of reasons. We're not upset by that, it's just a constraint we need to design around. The interesting problem to solve is how to make those freeloaders produce value for our paying customers. Obviously, getting those free players into the game is the first step to doing that.

I still hate Steam for a variety of reasons. I'm only using it because some of my games are Steam-only.

I have a ton of games in my steam account, all was so ridiculously cheap they almost paid me. Yes steam can be dumb sometimes and even incompatible with it's own installations, but it's still my main source of games.
There is an awesome local store here which is even cheaper (for example, I bought DAO for 7euros) , and since its such a cool store I really want to help them, but man, steam is so tempting because all the games are coming down with 7-8Mbyte/sec, and never have to worry about updates and stuffz.. its priceless.

I hate the software itself (slow, clunky etc) and I'm not a fan of 100% digital either. I like to have physical backups.

I have no problem with the company though, and there are some nice sales every now and then and I usually buy quite a few games (got loads of games on it now tbh).

My Q3 version comes from there too, but I've replaced the .exe so I can play it without Steam (I've cracked my own game if you wish). Did the same for Q1/Q2.

I used to get nice speeds and could install a game like TF2 in 5mins but now it's slow as fuck (even on abroad servers), dunno if it's my ISP but it's gay as fuck and I'm better off downloading updates manually somewhere else.

You can clean up the folder btw, delete everything apart from steam.exe and the steamapps folder, and it will rebuild itself the next time you start steam (it will ask for your logins etc again obviously)

Exactly. Christmas sale alone makes Steam more worth it than anything else, and now it seems like there are big sales like 2-3 times per year. Not only that, but every game that you pre-order on steam automatically has a 10% discount on the normal price. Pre-loading is awesome for playing the second the game comes out, too.

the only issue i have with steam is that there's no option to make a physical backup of your game. I know y ou can just copy the files over and such but I'd love to see an option that would "burn game to backup disc", or something like that.

I never used it tbh, it's easier to redownload the whole game again, but you could just move the folder somewhere and rar/zip/burn it as you wish, and after, you can uninstall the empty folder.
Later on, when you want to play that game again, you press on install game, as soon as the download starts:
- pause the download
- exit steam
- restore (unrar or copy back) the files
- start steam
- and will be ready in a minute (it will look like its downloading with an insane 100-200Mbyte/sec speed, but in reality, its just comparing the files with the online version, and ofc it will update if necessary)

ah, well my current net is only 100 kb/s so re-downloading isnt an option for my 20+ games >:D

The backup thing works really well (although a lot of games are portable and can just be copy/pasted anyway). The good thing is that it also backs up the saves/configs (even when they are saved in some weird places, at least I think so).

Steam itself is portable too, so when I'm dualbooting between 7 and XP it works fine even though I've been copy/pasting the software and its folder (including the games) for yonks.

You will be fine, experienced quakers generally do well in tf2 (like in most of the other fps games). Imo the scout is the hardest to master, but also the most rewarding for the skilled. Heavy is an easy start, especially if a skilled doctor accompanies you.

I prefer "payload" (or maybe control point) as my fav gametype(s), I found those the most fun for me, (but that's so subjective, since i prefer CTF in QL).

If you have a high-end PC, just pump up everything to the max in the menu (and in driver) and also with this additionally. The game looks awesome, almost as beautiful as QL ;)

Valve has already made a TON of money through the Mann Co. store. Essentially, you can buy items/hats for a small fee.

Every few months or so, they hold a competition where players are allowed to make their OWN new items to add to the game, and the winners are added. Those items are then added to the game, and you can craft them, or just buy them from the store if you are lazy. The people who won actually get a cut of all sales from the store, too. Like a month after the Mann Co. store opened, the people who had their items added to the store had made over $40,000 - and I'm sure valve took in a bigger share. With 5 sets added in the first Mann Co. update, that's already $200,000 that Valve paid out to contributors, and I'm sure they made a hell of a lot more than that.

Again, that was only like a month after the store opened. It's been open a while now, and new items have constantly been added to the game, including a ton of new items that were added yesterday. It's safe to say that Valve is making a profit, even without selling the game.

the only team mode that made sense in a pub environment was stopwatch mode from Enemy Territory (or Assault from UT). the goals are strict, there's only one path of action and the time for achieving map objectives is decisive.. also whoring kills with disregard of team goals is fundamentally discouraged

esea pretty much used to threaten to drop tf2 every season and there's a lot of community hate towards the organization. there's a lot of retards that claim NA should make their own league and ditch esea not realizing that once esea stops funding a tf2 league, most of the good players will quit.

let me add that while tf2 going f2p will attract players, viewership for competitive tf2 is really low, and I doubt that will change given the attitude most casual players have on it

It's not any different than when a dm13 match gets slow as fuck. There are underlying complexities for why the guy is shooting rockets at a doorway for 30+ seconds, just like there's a reason for nvc to be watching the valley/house for flanks.

1. no one in NA would ever play the spot he camps, because its retarded to not be able to help your teamates out at house should they get into a fight.

2. medics get an on use 10 second invuln("uber") on themselves and whoever they choose to heal after healing for some time. There are certain chokes where it isn't realistic to push without being on par or an advantage in uber or significantly more teamates alive.

I agree that spectating tf2 from an outsiders perspective isn't fun, and to an extent even from a competitive players' perspective it isn't very fun. Just keep in mind that it's the exact same way for quakelive.

- 2 soldiers (one pocket [protects medic], one roaming)

Occasionally you'll see one of either the soldiers or scouts swapping out to sniper/heavyweapons/spy/engineer depending on the map and strats used.

And as a nice bonus - no more recorded stats for people to care about, and people can just have fun again.

Quake being for free will not increase its user base because people would actually have to figure out how to install cpma/osp w/e.

In that sense, QL updates automatically and takes a way most of the work that the average user cannot accomplish.

Was thinking this the other day, it's a joke how they can have a gimmick like a game in a browser without any web-based content, if the only reason to go on the site is to load the game why even fucking have it?

Competitive TF2 is more dead than Quake, 99% of the people who play TF2 only play pub. There's kind of a stigma around playing TF2 competitively because the game is so retarded in pub servers, but it's pretty much a completely different game 6v6 and most people never care to try it. It's pretty fun, although I prefer Quake as an FPS.

Also TF2 has kind of a defrag aspect with rocket-jumping/jump-maps although it's nowhere near as deep, it's also pretty fun and hard to master.

Tried watching a 6v6 game once and it was the dullest shit I've ever seen, probably doesn't help that the competitive players are quite arrogant too as if TF2 if some kind of fast-paced FPS. The 5CP shit is pretty boring to be honest, the best modes in TF2 are ones were both teams have different objectives I've found but I guess that doesn't lend itself well to competition.

They properly gonna annonce TF3 soon or something like that since this just turned into F2P and therefore getting players hooked on buying TF3 whenever it turns up.

The sniper would be way overpowered if that were not the case. For a more fast-paced sniper experience, you should switch up to the huntsman.

They could've made the damage smaller then. This just removes the potential for a higher skill ceiling. You can neither hit epic no-zoom headshots, nor jump with zoom and hit someone previously hidden.

The distances for sniper are much too far to make any use of it, and that's the only way it could ever be balanced. No class is meant to do everything. Map positioning for sniper is fairly straight-forward, and there is no place where you would need to jump that it would help you. The whole point is to keep you stationary, so that you are a target for anyone who gets close to you, and to reward players who zoom in for a split second only to headshot.

The skill ceiling is still plenty high on sniper.

Change your download location in your settings. I was getting 5kb/s from a local download (dallas), so I switched to south korea and got 500kb/s.

from what i observed, the game is just noob like with the engie turrets, seems like i hit all rockets into the turret, and it is not broken

Engies can repair it as you are damaging it. You need to try to deal splash damage near the sentry to kill the engie first, or use the direct hit rocket launcher.

this game is awful. i played it professionally and made some cash at it, but my team, like most teams, fell apart because the ONLY reason to play TF2 was the money. we went back to playing our respective games.. CS, quake, UT... at least with a regular job, i can enjoy playing games that don't suck.

the game isnt entirely different in 6v6. its exactly the same, but with a plainly visible skill ceiling... slow projectiles, hitscans out the wazoo.. almost every single "feature" of tf2 is a reason why it sucks for competition.

coming from 11 years of playing QWTF, and literally playing it until the DAY the orange box came out, TF2 was the biggest disappointment in video gaming history, from a hardcore gamers perspective. they had a chance to preserve the ultimate FPS IP, a golden ticket to the gib-strewn halls of FPS history, and they blew it. they turned it into a WoW-ified piece of crap, complete with an endless item grind and menial, pedantic stats system to make little jimmy feel good about himself, even though he had a tough day at school!

they sold the soul of TF to make money. you need look no further than their own satirical description of their game, which quite frankly shows the insane level of disdain they have for the sanctity of actual good, rewarding gameplay:

tbh, I deeply respect the amount of work and dedication they put into TF2, however I also get sick pretty fast from the gayfest pimp-parade fagotry they flooded the game with.
Imo TF2 can give you some great pub fun (at least, I used to enjoy it a lot), but there is no way it will ever be any good for competitive gaming without some fundamental changes.
While I believe you just have to take the game as how it is, and use it only to have some pub fun, but it's still frightens me that you just described why they will win and prosper:(

fuck yea.. played it for 7+ years and its where i got most of my fps skills =) QWTF and early q3f were so fun as well.
z4t01 is spot on with saying it is the biggest dissapointment in video game history. Partly due to the wait time.. I can remember being hyped over its seemingly imminent release... in 2001 D: Then when it finally did come out in 2007 or whenever it was definitly the most disapointed I've ever been with a video game =/

Also as frustrating as it can be dealing with id software sometimes.. nothing will ever top the levels of frustration I experienced when Valve was still actively patching TFC, trying their best to ruin a good thing with every update.

Hmm, that Steam thing is kinda slow and buggy... I only installed it and added TF2, and it managed to hang up two times during that. And download speed is lame, I'm getting something like 20-60 KB/s. (on Battle.net, for comparison, it was about 6-10 MB/s). Still downloading this crap :(

so they made people buy the game ... and now after 6 months or even less, they decided to release its core components, portal and teamfortress for free ... that's not fair to the buyers ...

Why is the company apple giving to people, who buy a computer from them 3 months before the new os is coming out, a free upgrade?
I bought Office 2007 6 months before 2010 came out, guess what, I got a free upgrade (essentially the very reduced price of the 2007 version made me buy it, cuz I knew I will then get 2010 for free).

That is what Valve should do, give the buyers a discount or a free upgrade on something for the people who bought stuff from them in the last 6 months, that they decided to release for free.

the idea of steam is ok as it helps indie and small developers a lot. but installing software with loads of unneeded shit (steam) to install new software (games) is just bullshit. I like my computer as clean as possible.

I had already tried it on friends' computers at a few LANs but after downloading it and playing it yesterday I was honestly quite disappointed. It felt clunky and the scout was basically the only class with fast enough movement to not get bored too fast. The gameplay didn't feel "sharp" to me. I didn't try all modes, mainly area control, but imo RTCW was much more interesting in comparison.

Territory control is like... the worst mode in TF2.

I go on holiday for 2 weeks and not only does Quake get dropped by ESL in favour of a game called LoL (lol) but Team-fortress 2 is now free to play.


I haven't played Team-Fortress 2 in ages. Quite frankly they butchered the game. It had such defined beautiful visuals and concepts. Putting hats and all that shit in was the equivalent of getting a box of crayons out to alter the Mona Lisa. Absolutely tarded. I may play it every so often if mates get it, but quite frankly I think they've ruined that game and it's only going to slip more.

The stuff they added ruined the classes in a lot of respects. A demoman with a sword and shield? A sniper with a rifle that does no damage, can't headshot and automatically covers people in piss? A scout trying to look like a milkman? What is this shit?!

Yeah I agree the weapons and stuff aren't a huge deal especially since they are banned in leagues anyway. Some people are going to be way more offended by the aesthetics getting raped in TF2 than others. I'm not a fan of all the stuff they added but people have to realize Valve need to please their shareholders and getting new players means making everything more childish, it's same with nearly all entertainment industries.

I personally don't care about it ruining any sort of "theme", as I run it on shit graphics anyway. I care about aesthetics in a game with some story/content, not in a game where I just shoot people.

For sure, I use Tray Tools to force even lower picmip on the game just to get it more cell-shaded looking. If Bioware or Bethesda or someone started adding ridiculous hats in their DLCs, I might start getting annoyed though. Still, it would be nice to have a cvar to force vanilla hats just to remove the particle effects and stuff for high fps configs.

You used to be able to simply use a lower directx version, but they added hat effects support to lower versions some time in the last year. They did say that they're considering a cvar for disabling hats/effects, though.

Oh nice, I played a bit during a period recently when they didn't have any hats/unlocks on and in pubs it felt like a different game. That could become a really popular cvar - I'd like to see some pub servers actually disabling the unlocked items too just for variety but I doubt that would take on.

A few servers popped up with server mods that disabled all the new weapons/hats, but they only managed to bring in a handful of players before shutting down.
