better have one team with a decent prize than share the prize out and have no meaning to anyone.

I mean the teams that will finish top 3 all have the potential to make money at Dreamhack, it's not going to be anyone amateur.

whats the obsession with wanting to reward failure? it gives people motivation to push for the top spot rather than reaching top 3 and taking the foot off the pedal since they dont believe they can really beat the top team anyways.

its an online cup; theres no costs to cover so theres no need to reward losers

since when is top3 "failure"? we need to start making teams want to reach div1 level and push for top spots, not reward 1 team of old school q3rs. div1 is very stagnant and atm lots of div2 level clans dont even want to practise vs div1 clans. the motivation for div1 teams is already there

if they dont want to practice vs div 1 clans then the solution isnt having 3 watered-down prizes since there is more div 1clans than that. CB etc wise I can understand them not wanting to play div 1 (who doesnt want that "2" icon in their clan history) but if they dont even want to practice then the gap is probably too big and the odd 3rd place prize here & there isnt gonna change that

well, you seem to have a different view than i do. you dont create a healthy growing scene out of rewarding only 1 team. you need to create goals that are achievable for 'lower' levels aswell. if div2 doesnt see any hope of going into div1, and bottom div1 dont see any hope of getting to level of top div1, then its going to stay stagnant and boring, especially if the few prizes that excist are completely out of reach. a bit like 2v2, why even bother having cups when everyone knows who the winner is, not quite as extreme though.

When we started, we were bottom division (6) but we actually had the goal of reaching the top level. We slowly worked our way up, roughly getting promoted every year and we did this by accepting practice with teams much better then us from the higher divisions. We got smashed but we also learnt how to survive and keep it close and eventually got better at taking advantages and attacking those teams too.

Now teams will not practice with you if you are a division higher. They have no goal to improve or compete and that results in a stagnant scene. It is also why every team at the upper levels is made up of the same set of players switching their lineups every season, because there is no fresh blood.

What is the cause of this lack of ambition?

well, when i got a solution i'l tell you. but thats excactly what we did aswell, we were stuck into div1 from the beginning with hardly any q3 tdm experience and got raped in the beginning, we've slowly improved by sticking together as a team and working our flaws out... which is sadly quite rare, seems like teams just switch lineups and hope for the right combination of stars/aimers. :D

but i dont think the right solution to growing the scene is to award 1 team of q3 superstars who swoop in from inactivity when prize tournaments are announced.

purri/provi/damiah were top players in quake2 for at least a decade (duel/tdm).. and for myself I can say, that coming to quakelive while having only q2 (no q3) tdm experience helps a lot and make the progress much easier than to any other newcomers. So I wouldn't say it was that hard for xt :)

obviously its easier if you have good players from other quake games, instead of total tdm newcomers. doesnt change the fact its still hard to compete vs guys who have 10 years of experience from q3 tdm, especially when its hard as hell to find proper practise partners. the q3 allstar teams dont even play unless theres a money tournament inc. props to 4kings for being a true players clan though.

just out of curiocity, how much do you think tdm teams from q3 would get raped if they tried to get good at q2 and had to beat a team of provi/purri/damiah/gerppa? yeah i dont think they would practise for long. technically purri could have joined the finnish nation team at some point, but he refused because he thought that would just ruin the whole competition and it would be pointless, atleast that's what someone told me

I think a decent player/team from any other game, especially anything fast-paced, could easily get to a decent level in 1 year even without any advice. Watching demos/streams and practice is easily enough.

The reason most people don't is they switch games rather than , as suggested before , giving up or switching teams. Say a team starts a new game say "Quake Live", maybe 2 of the team play for a bit and then stop and play a new game and the rest stay and improve. Or two of them play 4 hours a day everyday, while two can only play 1 hour or prefer to play another game in tandom.

Further to that i think a lot of the players left are the ones who either love the game which means some top pros, or ones who take a long time to learn how to play a game and don't get bored. I guess 90 per cent of an online gamers, if not more, don't play the same game for 1 year let alone 10 :)

The stagnation in quake is also due lack of motivation to be number 1, when you could alterantivily invest your time into something like SC2 or CS and in theory make more money. (At a top level)

Tbh, if a new world tour was announced with a huge prize with 1 or 2 years preparation time you'd see a whole now breed of gamers coming through and the game would change vastly. I guess that isnt going to happen though.

Another problem is finding three/four dedicated guys who have the same ambitions to get better. I had the same problem in 1.6 and after playing for 1 or 2 years I had to make the decision to play either with friends and stay on our current lvl, play some aimmap ladders or leave them for stronger people, who both understand the metagame. Good aim doesn't mean that you can be good in 5v5 and I guess this applies to tdm or any other teamgame too.
This is why I currently focus on duel only and it is really refreshing how well I'm doing after a couple of months without caring about teammates. At first it was a bit hard as I couldn't blame anyone but myself but after some time you get used to it :P. Right now it is really hard to find people who want to get better as a team. Most of the people are playing for fun only and others won't improve at all as they don't and won't get the game.

We are looking to improve at tdm, well at least twister and myself but we never have 4. One is always afk (working) and the other is playing brink.

So you are dead right and the problem also is you can't recruit anyone established while you improve because they get too annoyed at the mistakes etc.

There are lot of players who still have an ambition to get better (they don't even need prizes..), but it's much harder to become good as a clan, where you need at least 4 people increasing their skill, than improving just yourself.. current top clans don't really give a chance to players from lower divisions to join them and help them improving their skill. So the top clans are to be blamed as well.

But you had 6 divisions back then, now if a few new players form a team they enter lowest division (3 nowdays?) and they'll play 123-5 matches, which isn't really entertaining even if you know you'll do better after a while.

I agree on that, it's what i used to want to achieve in q3ctf being a top player in that mod

But the recent qlctf "draft" showed me that 95 % of div1 people do not agree, their ego is just waaaay to big to ever consider the notion of helping lesser skilled ppl/teams become as good, god forbid they would ever lose to them. The skies would fall etc.

considering its about a professional sport where tens of thousands of players get paid for playing and trying to get better, it only makes my point more valid. if only 1 team got paid in NBA, you wouldnt see people practising seriously for years and years just to "not be second". i wonder what the players/coaches and guys who give this kind of speeches would say/do if they got told that only the winning team gets rewarded. "im not getting my salary becase i didnt win, oh thats only fair" yeah, i dont think so

its on a completely different scale, but the idea still applies to quake. the lower level players can dedicate their time to getting better because they can see the possibility of awards BEFORE they are the very best.

Not lame if you do it properly, for instance:
Jeesports cup should have at least a possibility for upper and lower division and rewards for both, not the dreamhack tickets but the hardware/money. So the EC clans battle for money/attendance and lower clans battle for some hardware.
That way you would se 5 div1 clans apply for this cup with something like 4 div2 clans which plan to move on to div1 apply to try their best.
You can steer people in the right direction.

You didnt comment about linkin, dibbe, etc... and I was also referring to the fact that 4Kings used to be a UK lineup with Q50 part of the team etc.

The simple fact that your lineup does not look like the old 4K is enough to say you're not really '4Kings' you know. I'm implying that your lineup mostly consisted of verb, zik, krysa, dk, linkin... Contrary to us, we will be coming with the lineup we used for the past 2 tdm seasons. The fact you split up shows that DH had an impact on your lineup tho

about linky, he played with us FEW games when fnatic did not attend leagues/tournaments, since he was able to help and were thankfull to him. Dibbe is regular member now and preparing with us on dh so dunno why u mention him (we was only 3 active players after spliting off). U forgot that me, krysa, dk are playing together since 2005... so your 2 seasons are laughably.

about 4K... old managment disappeared and new is in to take brand where it belongs, so get over with "4K was uk only blabla" shit.

i didnt take a look at the specifics but 1 day tournies should be bo3 double bracket so teams get to play atleast a couple maps and can get a more matched game in the lower bracket if they get raped in the first game 8(

edit: seems like its double bracket, how weak from the teams who dont want to participate

here's a random scenario for you:
another 2 EC teams apply and now we have 6 EC teams and 4-5 non EC teams getting raped by bunch of mercs and xt :)

so 1 EC team drops to lower bracket and now non EC teams get raped in upper and in lower bracket, playing 1-3 matches. Team will apply more, i hope, we have to get 4 to register @ that site, which has some social network over usage issues.

doing it in two division with each own reward pool would be better., maybe even div3 teams would join up to play div1 and div2 teams.

and yea lots of people are afraid to play tdm on account of getting raped / looking silly or w.e especially if they are known to be good in other modes .. it is a shame no divisional things are ever even attempted over here.

Their aim is excellent, but compared to "real" tdm players like zeroql, zyv or bab their positioning doesn't seem top notch. Though I got to admit I haven't watched them playing tdm very much.

I think the brackets need fixing so that people who move in to the lb in first round don't then end up meeting the same opponent a little further in, it happened to pretty much all the teams.

Rare positive justin.tv comment at least: 45 FPS @ 360p looked great (clean walls ftw, btw) and ran silky smooth on my netbook that reaaally struggled with anything own3d. $

Blows that 480p and up is completely unwatchable for so many of us when there's all that quality available though. :(

a lot of people have problems with the routing of justing, those people have the same lags with 240p that they have with 720p. for me it seems like it got fixed (thanks to trance who is trying his best to work out the issues with justin), but i feel sad for those who are unlucky and can do nothing about it

Nothing to do with connection. It's the routing. Usually the lvl^ JTV is fine for me but it's been jerky and screenshotty all of this event. I'm watching both the MLG streams open with no lag at all (though you'd expect that from a satellite). It's just the JTV routing apparently

i wasn't even that excited for tdm, but after watching this shit + vor and disrepute casting (after tuning out their horrid accents) i have really jizz'd hard from this tournament. vor knows his tdm shit, and disrepute is ok..

The TDM dreamhack tournament + russian/usa teams will make me need an transfusion of liquids from jizzing so hard.

very nice shit lvlup and jeesports.

(stream is perfect, 480p for me since my pc is shit)

It actually favors the team from LB. If it was a 2xbo3 the LB team would have had to win 4 maps. In a bo5 version they only need to win 3 maps.

We'd have a lot more maps played, which would be nice. On the other hand, here we got to see multiple matchups. Should've been BO3 from round 2, or something.

I still think playing another match is punishment enough for the team coming from the loser bracket. The final should be played between the two best teams and certainly there shouldn't be a possibility of it finishing after 2 maps (i.e. 1:0 -> 3:0).

Let me sum up my thoughts regarding DE:

1) It allows us to see more matchups than SE, which is interesting if we have a similarly skilled playerbase.

2) It gets the best two teams to the finals and allows them to duke it out on even ground.

3) It certainly should not allow for 2:0 grand finals.

All in all, I think DE should cater to the audience which wants to see different matchups and wants the tourney to end in a satisfying grand final.

As Dird said, this argumentation loses some steam if only the first spot gets the prize (from the POV of the players, at least). I, as a spectator, still want to see different matchups and a nice grand final.

Thats the problem with DE tho, most of the time it doesn't end in a satisfying grand final unless you change DE to become unfair towards the team coming from the WB final (using bo5 with 1-0 up is already a huge improvement for the excitement over the boresome 2xbo3 where you might see the same 3 maps twice in a row).
Thats probably also one of the reasons as to why you don't see DE in any of the major sports (next to ppl not being able to grasp DE).

So anyway, your reasoning is basically "fuck the players, cater to the specs" while mine as a player is obviously the other way around. ;)

Unfair really is relative. I don't see why it's necessary for the WB winner to get 1:0 in maps from the start. An additional BO3 to play after a day of gaming could be a lot. Maybe letting WB winners pick 3 out of 5 maps played would be enough?

Wonder if it's possible to salvage the DE concept and get to something with a nice final. Not even talking about the fairness (which is impossible to achieve anyways :ASD), but ruling out the 2:0 scenario.

It's not necessary to have the wb team be 1-0 up, it's necessary to give them smth in return for not being able to lose once like the other team did tho. I don't see how letting them pick maps would compensate for smth as huge as "getting a second chance after having lost" :)

well the question is how you define fairness then. to me, being the second best player at an event and getting knocked out first round isnt fair. but sure its fair in a sense that its win or out for everyone in every game

You can construct an example. Take 8 players. One of them wins easily wins vs six, loses vs one. His stats are 6:1. Other players are all 4:3 (three of them), 3:4 (another three) and the one who wins vs rapha is at 1:6. If they played 28 matches (each vs each), you can easily see who is the best player. Yet when our rapha gets grouped with our stermy (sorry 1:6) in the first round, he'll go out easily and a inferior player will take the win.

1 wins vs: 2 3 4 5 6 7
2 wins vs: 3 4 5 8
3 wins vs: 4 5 6 8
4 wins vs: 5 6 7 8
5 wins vs: 6 7 8
6 wins vs: 7 8 2
7 wins vs: 8 2 3

Hence why the only fair system is everyone plays everyone (tho then you still have to sort out ties) but that is also quite anticlimatic since it doesn't have a proper final.
Over thinking it like you just did would diminish the potential tournament win of any player other than player 1 which imho isn't exactly a nice thing to do. If player 1 wants to win then he better starts practicing so he can beat player 8 :p

It is fair in the sense that if you want to win the tournament you have to beat everyone you will face and it's the same for everyone player. Different playstyles and unlucky brackets for one player don't change that.

If you want a perfect skill ranking in the end then SE is not the best system to use but if you just want to have an unbeaten winner on top in the end then SE is fine.

Is there any vods streamed by trance availible? Like the 4kings vs reason game? Can only find the ones streamed by disrepute.

Btw tox rail isnt close to what it once was. maybe had a bad day..

I wish there were some demos of this.. VOD's are acceptable but to analyze closely tactics and the organization of teams its really hard because of the followkiller thing and other stuff.
It's ok for streaming but demos would be great :|
