Why does something need to fill the void? The genre is dead.

I can't play horrible games like CS or CoD after playing Quake 3 for so long. By the same token I can't play Quake Live. It's on life support and this could be its last year. I just wonder if people will go back to Quake 3, give up on the genre like you said, or find another game similar to the Quake series?

tf2 is an acceptable alternative to quake in the same way that dirt in an acceptable alternative to food

Somewhat fast-paced (depends on class), large/active community, casual fun, advanced maneuvers from games like Quake, constant support/content, and a fairly active competitive scene. While the skill curve isn't quite as high, it's still more than enough for the likes of most Quake players.

What does it have in common with Quake again? Projectile weapons?

-no item control
-no advanced movement
-no brightskins
-not much emphasis on using the right weapon for the right situation
-very low skill ceiling (plenty of times when one player just cant do anything even if he's way better than his opponent)
-terrible netcode (worse than ql)
-poor performance (gets worse with every update)
-annoying gimmicks (hats/drops/sounds) annoying to play in general (huntsman, slowdown weaps)
-competitive tf2 consists mostly of spamming a chokepoint until you have uber rofl

-The skill ceiling is quite high, but you're trying to equate the game to a duel. It's not. It's a team game, and Quake might have survived if the emphasis was away from duel. Being out of position against a class is as much of a worry as using the wrong weapon in the wrong position.

-TF2 netcode is fine. Sniper has some issues where lagging can actually help you, but sniper is rarely used in comp anyway, and only at certain points. Even still, good snipers aren't affected by it at all.

-Performance is fine, if you use a proper low graphics config. If your TF2 doesn't look somewhat like this, you're doing it wrong.

-Being against the sounds/graphics is not related. The fact that you dislike the huntsman shows how low on the skill curve that you are. Sniper rifle >>>> huntsman, and can only even manage to be MARGINALLY useful on 32man servers, in some situations, and without an enemy sniper who is moderately decent. Even when allowed to use some of the drop items, almost every competitive player will still be using the default loadouts.

-Competitive TF2 is not about spamming at all.. there isn't enough time. You can't +back to win, as aggression is the only way to force a move, or make progress. Since you're still at the level of being raped by huntsman, you probably have never even played comp.

edit: To be clear, I'm not saying that they're the same game. I'm merely saying that it's not a huge jump from Q3/L->TF2 as it is from Q3/L->COD/CS/etc.. The similarities in gameplay are abundant, and most of your Quake skills will transfer over directly.

It took me a grand total of maybe one or two days to learn most of the Scout and sticky jumps. Whereas it took me months to become proficient at strafe jumping. I could follow your train of logic and imply that the reason you think strafe jumping is "silly" is b/c you're bad at it. But I wont, I'd like to think I'm a bit above that.

At a time you can only have two weapons + a melee in tf2. Compared to 7+ on most Quake maps. Nowhere near the same depth.

The netcode is not fine. I've had plenty of instances where dead on, point blank shots didnt register. There were even vids posted on gotfrag with the same exact thing happening to some of the top players.

Performance is also not fine. Most of the fps drops are caused by extensive particle effects (and lack of true multicore support) which iirc are locked and can not be disabled thru a config. I would also get severe memory leaks when playing tf2, where the performance would deteriorate until the game eventually crashed in less than an hour. But that was a while ago and they might have fixed it (doubtful)

I never said the huntsman was good. Just that it's incredibly random and it's annoying to get hit by one and die instantly just b/c some noskill idiot got lucky. And unlike the huntsman, natasha was used a lot in comp matches and it was very annoying to play against.

Unless the teams are extremely one sided, a typical comp tf2 match will have multiple multiple stalemates (usually between the 4th and 5th point) where one team is defending and the other is trying to force their way in but can not do so until they have uber because it is damn easy to lock down most entrances with stickies+spam. Then the other team can counter uber, some players will die, but enough may live to keep the defense going, others will respawn and be back to square one. I've seen granary matches where the above happens for over 20 mins at a time.

Strafe jumping mechanics are a hindrance to gameplay, and only serve as another barrier to popularity. It's not the technique of strafe jumping that helps Quake, but more the resulting gameplay. In this regard, anything that opens up options/creativity can be positive.

Number of weapons does not equate to depth. Don't forget that the VAST majority of situations in Quake (I'm assuming not QL since it's even worse) come down to an option between 2 weapons, at most. Unless you're talking about CA, you don't have all weapons in TDM anyway, and you are essentially playing a "class" by what you have.

Vids of pros complaining about netcode? Sounds more like you don't know how to set up your net settings, and you play on high ping servers.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that you have individual issues with TF2 that in no way represent the game. Unless you're on some shitty integrated graphics card, there is no way that you are having trouble running TF2 with an ultra low graphics config, and with dxlevel 80. If your video card is that bad, you likely have performance issues in games like QL, but I hear that some people do with any manner of video card.

Huntsman is not random. The only place you could possibly fall victim to it is on a casual 32man server. If you are actually playing comp against a team that is using a huntsman, and losing, you should probably stop playing games entirely. If you're complaining about balance/random/spam on 32man servers, Quake would be exactly the same. Natasha was banned in comp, so that's just bullshit. It might be unbanned now, but it's because it was nerfed to uselessness.

I don't know what games you are watching, but stalemates can only happen in rare occasions, and only on certain maps. If you're talking about personal experience (rather than high level play), I could imagine a stalemate issue if you are dying to a comp team with a huntsman sniper.

Demos have always been off in source games. Without significantly high ping, the netcode is quite qood.

I wasn't comparing the skill curve, but just saying that TF2 does have a significant skill curve in competitive play. It's not as steep (or as high) as Quake, but the peak is likely still out of reach for the vast majority of Quake players anyway - just as the peak of Quake is far and away out of reach of most Quake players, even on this site. Coming from Quake will give you a nice head start over someone from a different game, but you should still always have a wall to climb.

TF2 has changed significantly. Carnage and relic are on the top level, but their DM advantage has pretty much been eliminated. There are far better players (soldiers/scouts) in TF2 and it's only now that the scene has matured and people have realized that DM means nothing, it's about teamwork.

Nowadays, carnage and relic are no longer the best, they've been surpassed by a team of rags-to-riches nobodies(Check-Six), some of whom have no prior FPS experience to TF2.

In other words, we are far past the time when being good at Quake or TFC or NS meant you are good at TF2. Whaz plays TF2, but he's nothing special. Dummy's team didn't even make the playoffs this season. TF2 has become its own game.

TF2 is a great game, fun on pubs, most fun pub game I've ever played. However, competitively it is by no means easy and although it's dumbed down compared to Quake, get USED TO IT.

Games are only going to get easier as they try to attract a more casual crowd. Say goodbye to Quake style games.

I don't really have a problem with it. In the end a video game is a video game and as long as its fun - I'd argue TF2 is more fun than Quake - then I'm satisfied.

If you played the game, you'd understand what I'm talking about. Double/triple rocket and sticky jumps aren't uncommon, they are slightly more technical than doing so in Quake, and are far more necessary to master.

Low graphics configs. There are many to pick from, with varying levels of graphics reduction, so I suggest simply google searching for "tf2 low graphics config" and picking the one that works best for you.

edit: also, you should be using a lower directx version, which can be done by adding '-dxlevel 80' to the command line parameters (steam > library > tf2 > properties > set launch options).

Yes, the gameplay and balance remains the same, but things still did change, even competitively. Granary was great on release, scouts made it there first (this is before RJ'ing and sticky jumping were popular), so it was a nice 2v2 at mid for control. The balance of it was nice, and teamwork was needed. Then Granary changed, and they put up those fences near mid, so the entire team sits and waits for them to go down, and it's more of a clusterfuck.

My issue is the overall playability of the game in public servers. On release, I could pub and it was fun. Now, the game is just a giant mess. People love the 12v12 on small maps like well, there's too many weapons and too much bullshit going on. The balance of the game was long gone, the more they introduced, the worse it got (in my opinion). Now look at it. 2.99 hats. hats.

The game itself is fine, it's just used in a poor way now. The only way the game is playable now is in a competitive way, but I don't want to scrim to want to have fun.

There are some issues with the game that I didn't like, like headshot registration, damage from splash rockets didn't feel consistent, etc. The netcode is okay, but it could be better.

Play on servers with smaller caps. I'd still have to disagree, though - almost every map is just fine for up to 32 players.

Hit registry sounds like config issues, or that you're just playing on a really high ping server. What config are you using?

When was the last time you played or watched a game? Many maps have still been getting tweaks, but I think you're thinking a different map than granary.

i dont know about the us scene but here in europe tdm is more active than ever, i can play pickup the whole day and night and get a pcw every evening
on top of that there is more than enough for my duel needs aswell, national esl league, smaller cups, and a healthy list of friends that i can always train with

When I was playing, there were no public and rarely pickup TDM games. I'm talking one game every three days. Public CTF was runes and space. Pickup CTF, maybe two or three games a day with the same exact people every time. Hardly anyone was dueling except known names. Even CA wasn't very active. If you wanted to play then, you were either playing space/runes CTF or FFA. I hear it's even worse now.

I have no troubles playing a game of FFA either, at any time of day or night, with good players. Its a shame the premium maps don't get a look in though, since most players don't have premium. But hopefully when more maps are added, some premium maps will be made free.

I'll be playing QL until it dies because I want to support it, I think its got a lot of potential as a concept, but in a new game obviously all this website stuff is built in to the actual game (ie Q5). Which would hopefully be a lot less buggy, and have everything pretty well understood from QL, ie, what the community wants, what works etc. Hopefully, anyway ;)

I think QL is dying because there are currently lots more players playing it than, for example, a year ago. It sounds funny, but it became hard for me to find a CA server because my laptop is slow and every time I join a server, when I finish loading, it is already fully filled with players. Even early in the morning I can find 10+ CA servers with 5-7 players on them, and I remember that some time ago I was lucky if I was able to see even one populated server in some weird ping location. All this indicates that people are desperate to play the last remaining days of QL, to get as much out of it as possible until it is closed down, therefore QL is indeed going to be closed down soon.

I don't get whole ql dieing thing as well. We had that time at q3 where there was no big lans for almost 2-3 years and a lot of people were playing hardcore. As Nukm said, we can get few pcws every evening with various teams of our mid skill and there are a lot of 'new' players coming back from nowhere. Same for duel. I don't care about ESL, WCG and other shit, still prefer playing quake to watching it. So in that terms QL is very alive imho.

On this subject, I was just thinking what would make a suitable modern replacement.

The game has it's major flaws (in my view, one of them being weak/strong ammo, but let's not start a debate on this), but the community...

...boy do quakers have a whole lot to learn from it. Warsow has, hands down, the best, most "active" (considering the playerbase) and well organized fun community with little to no dickheads.

It's a pity there are several gimmicky elements in the game, if they made it look competitive, it would be a success.

Sure I can name the top 16 or so players because they are the ones that you will see most playing in cups but the CA scene is "huge" for warsow-rellations and I don't even want to know how many iCA-players there are.

The only way QL will die is if a better game can take its place. Right now there are no better alternatives so whether you like it or not QL isn't going anywhere.

should try reading posts, when all else fails, someone will bring back the big FPS drops Q4 has when your clientside, and r_shadows to disable dynamic shadows from bad lighting will give you most of the FPS back,

the SDK is 90% vec 3 math, cpu`s can only do so much calculation per second, alot of code is worthless server and clientside and over written by a snapshot, Q43A saves some of that

Started to play a bit sc2 yet again (mostly because had some major problems with ql yet again, how unexpected), the community and number of leagues/tournaments and stuff around that is really intimidating, about fps genre : might try brink since I was rtcw/et player for a long time so at least ill give it a shot, also hoping that BF3 multiplayer would be some good mix up between shooting mechanics and general quite fast pace of bc2 and some more complex maps of bf2.

noone would play starcraft if it was multiplayer-only ... and if it was marketed like quake live ...

Even though I've been in this project myself aswell I have to say it's not gonna replace QL. Yes - the netcode is better and overall it is less bugged etc but Q3 won't be getting any new players anymore (as it haven't for quite some time). :<

If you manage to do some graphical updates like the AA stuff in CPMA I'm sure it will draw attention. There are lots of people who can't believe that the old q3 engine can look really good, well there are some mods like High Qualiy Quake that can disappoint them, but other than that, the rest is up to the guys like you.

AA is possible already in quake3e if you force it from graphic driver settings (like Nvidia Control Panel). As for the mod to become "the next CPMA" there's a few technical things that would need to be changed imo. Which you'll see, or won't.

CPMA is the mod, CPM is the gameplay. What I meant with next CPMA is that it is possible to play lot of different gameplay in the mod: you can play vq3, ql, cpm and tweak anything about them or make a completely new kind of Q3 gameplay.

Many games could take the spot, but they need then to follow paths that few to none have done before them.

- Provide fully workable guides, tutorials etc on mapping for the given game. Not some half done outdated things which will bork the map once it is ingame. Yey cool map, lags like ####, totally unplayable but looks good though /o\
- An SDK that is locked down to still have a grip on things but open enough to bring new features into the game and possibilities to make things better.
- A place to share and develop code, with both modders and actual developers. Why write the same shit ten times over for each mod when all could benefit from sharing building it better.
- Official online channel (for instance IRC) where everybody can gather, but also provide essential things to be able to run organized games like pickups. One channel with bunch of people, easier to talk, get games, share experience etc.. Not just a forum which is static but something dynamic and follows how players normally communicate! Seriously times changes, follow it!
- Place to post bugs, see progress on bugs etc. Pretty much a freaking roadmap of what is going on and what to expect. No more "when it's done", people are really tired of it and makes people look other places for games.
- Several game servers on different hosts, with the possibility to add own hosters or join up on hosting. People won't play a game with locked servers when they have providers which are better and could help out.
- Every firm lacks income after the game is released, make it so people also can contribute in a easy way for a product they bought. Some people may donate money for something they like and even more if their thoughts are taken into account when new things are being done to the game.
- Competitions to get games going but also mapping. No maps, no gaming. A competition on maps will bring NEW maps to a game instead of remake upon remake from other games.

Pretty much what you need to do is break the fucking barrier between "pro", "devs", "player", "modders". We're all different people who can give to a community so communicate, share and build it together! Else you'll have a game that go straight up for some months and fall from the sky straight into a flaming crash at rock bottom.

Zhakal makes a lot of great points. If a company REALLY wanted to be involved with their mapping, modding/dev. and pro communities, it wouldn't take much. It would be much like id, pre-2006. It's funny that they gained most of their popularity BECAUSE of people taking Quake 3 and molding into different things, is now obsessed with keeping their products as locked down as possible. What were they expecting? People would be overjoyed that they can't make maps for their favorite game anymore?

you will probaly always be able to make maps for FPS games, the code is simple, and have mutators like UT, but full conversions might end 1 day on the main engines, there are still free engines to use on moddb

engines are a war ground in todays world of licences etc and it all goes on how new "tech" is implemented and how good it worx

most engines are cross platform for all consoles and PC and mac

the whole FPS genre runs on 4 or 5 engines

As of Quakecon 2008, Carmack said that they were not in development of Quake 5, and I believe it was shortly before QL went live that he said the future of Quake depends on if QL is a success. Not sure what they consider a success, but I wouldn't hold your breath for another game.

Quake has suffered from a chronic illness called lack of organization. Right now, the tourney system is a mess. A central entity like KESPA is the only solution.

I also feel that the players have been pampered beyond reasonable limits by the community. Their attitude is off the charts. I've been following the Starcraft 2 TSL3 every weekend and none of the commentators ever brought up stuff like "xyz player has gone for a smoke" or "xyz player doesn't have the server password" or like Spartie pulled a "gtg" and then ninja dropped out of the server or any other lame reason just to cause delays. Mind you, these are the online games we're talking about which are often considered as [sarcasm] Serious Business [/sarcasm] by the community.

Quake needs a central body that runs more events on a regular basis which might lack the flair of a full blown ESL event but with prize money equal to or greater than Stermy's LAN. Start off with a Round of 32 and lead it all the way to the Grand Final.

TSL games aren't played live so I guess they have the same problems but you don't see them (which isn't bad!)

TSL is casted live, but the games are casted from the replays. I intended to question the odd choice put in place by Zotac and other online tourneys with that statement. The cast is done from replays so that players cannot cheat by simply opening up the stream in the background. Most of the QL tourneys have failed to implement this and rather found an alternative by allowing only streamers as specs..weak solution imho.

You can't easily stream a quake game from a demo, with no control over POV. Of course this would definitely be viable if they ever bother to add multi-POV demo recording.

Since the community is only paying for new content than the game itself (so to speak), I think the community should milk on the id cow just like they've been milking the community.

I'm pretty sure there are people who can code such things and propose convincing ideas like Gillz' scoreboard. Sell them to id and make it buy-able, in short. By relying too much on id to do things, it's a deadlock and we all know the answer already.

Agree about the organization issue. I posted related thoughts some months ago, in my not so humbe opinion id themselves should make the rules, so tournament organization like ESL just have to chose or chose not to add it to the game list, knowing the uglier stuff (maps, rules, etc) is already done. I agree. While ESL has been very instrumental in getting QL somewhere finally, it has its own qualms. Unpaid dues from last year for instance. So despite great efforts, the end result mimics that of "just another organization". To me, the mecca still is Quakecon coz it's run by a bunch of volunteers. Even though it's not as big as dreamhack, it has the potential to be one central organization that deals with everything Quake.

The invitationals should only be used as marketing ploys for the game itself and nothing more. We're at a stage where invitationals have become the mainstream tournaments due to which, the pro-am league is nowhere.

qcon was never about the competition, it is in no way the mecca of competitive quake and i hope we will never have to rely on their weird choices

Well since I stopped playing QL, I've started playing Bad Company 2 and will probably get BF3. At 1 time I was never into the team oriented games. Quake got boring so I tried something new and I spend a lot more time playing. I think Quake and the Deathmatch mode all the time has run its course.

Why bw over sc2?

well i played bw on quite high level until 2008 or so, and now when i got to play sc2 the game feels "meh"...

winning games in sc2 isn't rewarding at all compared to bw imo, in sc2 you have like 10-15 mins of macro, and first bigger fight usually decides the winner, in brood war you actually have to try hard to win :D and tbh, brood war is where legends were, and still are being made (in terms of games and players). really, just watch flash vs jaedong and then compare it to the best tvz you've seen in sc2 and you'll get my point :)

Should probably wait until Flash/Jaedong move over to SC2, to see what they can do with it. Though, since KeSPA looks to be having both SCBW and SC2, I think they might just stick with BW.

i dont see why anyone that's close to or top level in brood war would switch, since there's much more money to be made in brood war, stadiums are packed with spectators, and eventually you become a legend there :D

sc2 is just missing all these things in and around broodwar that made it so great.

I'm sure SC2 will have those things, too - KeSPA came to an agreement with Blizzard, and they just have to wait a few months before they can start doing SC2 and SCBW on live shows, and major tournaments.

What i miss is someone going on a domination streak. The metagame shifts are too abrupt for anyone to properly exploit a new strategy/trick/tactic for a longer period of time, and mechanics alone don't seem to be AS important (don't need to be as refined as in BW), and that's what separated the best from the rest in the long run.

I hope they actually "fix" SC2 in the way that will make having ungodly mechanics much more rewarding. The only difference you'll usually see is someone churning a couple more units or have better caster micro. Everything else seems to revolve around either coinflipping openers or surviving one big be-all-end-all battle (with exceptions of course, but drawn out macro games aren't as common as i'd like outside of tvt), and i think SC2 deserves better than that.

as funny as it may sound, and even if I remember doing so something like 5 months ago I felt like checking a few minutes ago if it had not magically been reversed to active.
It has not. But I'll check again in a few weeks anyway, just to make sure I don't waste another 50euros.

The PC(!) games I enjoyed in the last few years :

- The Orange box (Flawless work from Valve tbh!)
- L4d coop (and some l4d2)
- COD series (4,5,6) single player campaigns (except BO which was horrible)
- COD 4 and 5 multiplayer (sadly, it gets boring after a few weeks)
- SC2
- Minecraft
- DeadSpace and DS2
- TDU
- FEAR2 SP
- Borderlands (p2p shit is only playable with ppl near by:/)
- Serious Sam HD (I have no idea why I like this, I only played coop with friends:D)
- GTA4 (shitty slow console ported code ruins it:/)
- Maffia2 SP (only for the good storytelling)
- Mass Effect (and ME2)
- Dragon Age Origins (first was supergood, the second was bad:/)
- Portal 2 (awesome game)
- Warsow (not sure if I still like it tbh, the ammo thingy was ruining it)
- BFBC2 (fun!)

Still nothing beats Q3/QL, only BF:BC2 came a little close tbh.

I'm really looking forward to RAGE-COOP, COD:MW3-SP and BF3. Even if I waiting for BF3 the most, somehow I hope that RAGE surprises me and turns out to be better:)

revamp painkiller graphics and slow it down a bit otherwise fast fps have no chance to survive. there wont be replacements since the genre cant be dumbed down that much. from bw to sc2 sure there was a lot of possibility to get mechanics easier but in fps how would you do it? autoshoot? auto item timer? pls. the only thing is worth to talk about making movement easier which pk already did (despite the game was so fucking fast even quake pros was disguisted by it)
its a genre where raw talent breaks through. look at how much the pros practice, laughable amount. still if there would be someone playing 24/7 all day long (hello alfaomega?) still could gtfo against the likes of rapha or cypher.
in starcraft its quite the opposite you play 10-12 hours a day or you wont win so the genre rewarding hard work much more than fps. id say after 2-3 years playing 10 hours everyday everyone have a fair shot to become a subpro with the illusion of being a king one day. in quake its impossible. people realize it after a while i think and just stop trying idk.
