I thought at first, too. But then it is not entirely unrealistic he might at least have witnessed the bombing.

- monday would be the obvious return day and he would be going to Moscow
- board plane midmorning, arrive in the afternoon
- it was the biggest airport in Moscow
- it was in the arrivals area

Had he not missed his plane, it's entirely possible he would of been in the airport when it happened.
