i don't think it matters much. one of the great parts of uni life is that unlike during schooltime one's able to choose who he/she hangs around with most of the time. it probably takes atleast a year or so if you're somewhere new though.

In the Netherlands it's kinda of unusual to take a year off after high school or even multiple years. Usually the older people are the ones that failed one or several years in high school or so called 'switchers'. People that failed or weren't happy with their study and then switched. The really old people (22-23+ in the first year) are people that did HBO (Hoger beroeps onderwijs - transl: Higher labour eduction) and then started either their bachelor or master at a university.

I never had problems with dealing with older students (though only males at my study, maybe it's different with more females) as long they don't try to act older or more mature. The ones that do act like that most of the time form groups with other older student and if there aren't any other older students, then most of the time these people will fail due to social exclusion.

In New Zealand it's totally normal to go on your "OE" (overseas experience) when you finish high school for a year or two, then come back to University. I guess thats why I was just really surprised when people think i'm "old" :( I don't feel old!!

Its a lot more girls than guys (maybe a 10:2 ratio) in my course and I think that it's the opposite.. some of the young ones really try to be older. Anyway, I have no problem at all with my classmates either, I was just really surprised how many of them came straight from school :) Maybe i'll have some issues when Twilight comes up since I don't know *anything* about it.

You should watch out with that though.

If you constantly do assignments with people who are better at the subject as yourself, you run the risk of not learning a whole lot because they will usually provide all the answers for you.

So for your personal development it's much better to work with people who are less good at the subject or at most equal.

With the side note that they are motivated as well as it is easy to get dragged down.

people that are not motivated usually don't make it past the first year.

My uni (RU) had very loose rules (geen bindend studieadvies) at my department so there actually was a bunch of unmotivated people even past the first year.

Yeah I agree about the motivation and also about having people who are equal level because it really helps to emphasize things in your own mind if you have to explain it to someone else.

I ,for example, can't stand it if someone if better than me all the time, so I will be motivated to learn more.
Also, if there is someone who is a bit less good, and asks a question I can't answer, I am motivated to find the answer.

Yea engineering is impossible to learn by yourself unless you have a genius level intelligence. However, cramster and torrent solution manuals have helped me immensely. Cramster has every EE book I have ever used.

Also it depends on what you study, lots of people do law or management uni after working for a while for better $ or career perspective (parallel to work or sabatical), while few "older" ppl do i.e. physics or math. Then there are the bored retirees who mostly do history, politics, philosophy and so on. Guessing they aint much into boob-talk either tho.

I went to uni right after high school :) I did a diploma in marketing, graduated top of my class, won a scholarship and then moved to Sweden to play Quake :P Then I worked as a marketing manager and actually hated it, so I wanted a career change and that's why i'm back at Uni now.

I felt really disrespected at my last job - really looked down on since I didn't have a masters degree so I really want to avoid this feeling in the future. I also didn't want to go back and start an MBA because I realized that I really don't have it in me to be a tough business bitch.

I'm a Dutch citizen so i'm actually not an "international" student, I pay the EU/EEA fees.

And yeah, being out of a school environment for 5 years, it's gonna take some time to adjust and get on track to manage all the required reading, assignments and extra stuff they want me to do. Also it really depends on the university you go to. The one I was at in New Zealand (AUT), it was BREEZY. Not because the subjects were different but because you spent 6 months on a subject instead of 3.

You might want to look closer at the rules in the UK, because I was looking into studying there and you need to be a EU / EEA *resident* (so even if you have citizenship, you need to at least live there) for (I think) minimum of 2 years before you are able to get the EU price for University there.

I went back at 27. Yea it's a lot harder now because I have to manage working a part time job and going to school semi full time. When I had a gf it was even harder because my entire life was her/school/work and nothing else. My field of study is fairly difficult (EE), but I do find it easier to learn at my age. I'm more motivated to get good grades, because if I don't I'm going to struggle later in life. There are only three ways to remedy the lack of free time problem. 1) Take 1 less class a semester and load up in the summer 2) Study for you classes you are taking next semester during your breaks so you are a good 2-3 weeks ahead 3) Take out a massive amount of loans so you don't have to worry about $ (for the time being).

As for your concern about always having assignments, you should try getting ahead in your classes. If you are a good week or two ahead of the curve, getting good grades is a lot easier and you don't get overwhelmed. You should try to find a day where you say to yourself "ok, I'm just going to sit here all day and plow through as much stuff as I can". You will get ahead pretty fast if you do that enough times at the start of a semester.

those are all really good ideas. One point though is that I don't have holidays between semesters. Just a weekend :(!! The only time off I have this year is Christmas and some Easter days. It's quite brutal!

As far as the working situation is concerned, i'm very lucky that I don't have to work as well. I'm also really motivated to get good grades. I'd love to be the class nerd, heheh.

I'm also quite late, I just turned 27 and I am doing right now my master in computer science ... I am doing the master in France, in the program probably all people are younger than me, but anyway since doing my bachelor (started the Bsc with 24) I am used to being a bit older, although the age in the german university before was a bit higher than here (probably because german school takes longer and male people here often have to serve for the state, as I did too).
But tbh. the study colleagues I met so far are much more friendly somehow than in germany ... but the study program right now is very hard, it's not really computer science right now, it is Math with some relation to Computer Science ... your free time will depend on your university and your program, in my bachelor studys I had like 2-3 weeks in april off and like 1,5 months in summer when each semester ended ... in between there is only the christmas vacation where you also have to use some time to learn for exams ...

maybe i'll finish it sometime because it's the thing that just kinda keeps bugging you. but at the moment im making very good money on a few other things and that's okay for me

School is just shit for some people. It's all geared for the masses, which means, if you're too fast or too slow, it doesn't work for you. The girls are nice though. I started school (uni) again a month ago at age 24. the age ranges from 19 to 32 in my class, only a few who came straight from high school, so the maturity level seems pretty high actually. I find a lot of them aren't used to having this amount of responsibility though. I guess you kinda need to have a "real" job and your own place to really know what it's like to be on your own like this.

but overall it's nice. not a lot of work, cool people all round and a very nice city to live in.

Actually, there are a lot of 'colorful' people who move from Stockholm to Malmö because they feel the city suits them better. My experiences with Stockholm has been that people tend to their own group of people and be more focused on themselves compared to the people in Malmö, who seem to be more open and down to earth.

Besides my personal bias you could argue that being closer to the rest of Europe, mainly Denmark, Germany and Poland gives the city a much more continental feel.

And, Malmö is at the very tip of the giant penis that is Sweden (have a look at a map). Finland would be the nuts, so the ass would end up somewhere in Russia.

The trick with the free time thing is simple. You have to align your tastes/interests with what will make you successful. Therefore anytime you actually do have free time you're spending it on productive things (e.g., studying/reading, writing, making your esports documentaries or whatever). Quake/video games aren't productive.

you're right but I can also look at video games from a "serious" point of view. One of my lecturers has done loads of research on the psychological side of video games (such as the social aspect of LAN events, why FPS games are appealing, why boys are more attracted to FPS games etc) so I find that really interesting :)

i think its important to study because the material itself interrests you.
i see a lot of people studying because they want a "good" job training, ending up stressed and badly motivated

but i realized its a bit harder to make up new friends, witch you obviously need. thats the only problem i see from my point of view.
