I can't justify buying a cab, so CRT/LCD in portrait mode and arcade stick will have to do for now. Most of console-ported shmups suck afaik.

I recommend mamep99 lagless, aka shmupmame. It contains patched drivers that removes one frame of lag compared to the official build. You can save states if you want to practice specific boss, etc.
If you can't find the older 99 roms you can compile your own version with the source files for 137. DL

Garden of Coloured Lights is a good free one. One of my favorites due to the variation in strategy you get based on your weapon selection and weapon use over time. The more you use a weapon the more powerful it becomes.

What is that? Can you play any games on that egret thing? Classic games through MAME and such. Egret 3 looks amazing, its 2 player.

well theyset up for arcade hardware, but you could butcher one into a mame cab if you wished. they usually have interchangeable control panels so can have 1 or 2 player controls

i used to have an egret cab - it was an older model but the rotating monitor was very nice and the quality was good. i personally wouldn't get another cab though because they are generally very heavy and take up a lot of unnecessary space 99% of the time - you'd probably be better just building a MAME machine or something.

yeah a more sensible and probably cheaper option is to get a cheap pc as a mame unit with some decent joysticks and a rotateable lcd.

Ye there are 4:3 LCD monitors, infact alot of CCTV LCD's are 4:3 but with a BNC & VGA port.

I'm sure there are standard ones also though.

You can get vesa compatible stands that allow them to be mounted either way.

If you are going the LCD route, there is a technique of getting the original 15khz with scanlines look.
Since MAME devs removed cleanstrech option, the trick is to get the 1:1 pixel mapping in native res. The games look perfect.

Shmups and their music ftw, really want to make a soundtrack to one some day, me and a couple of friends (two coders and one gfx dude) started one but it died off. :(

You should check out Hydorah. Great '80s style hori shmup and one of the best indie games imo!

The game is free and you can download a pdf called "the making of" where the author explains the the whole process, from initial sketches to sound and sprite editing.

Oh snap, forgot about that one. Downloaded the .pdf but never got around to reading it (which will just be for fun anyway, someone else needs to do the non-audio parts) and have yet to play the game. Will do, thx for reminder!

Haven't played anything since ps2 R-Type Final and the Gc Ikaruga, shameful :/

ikaruga is also on xbox 360 marketplace now, but of course nowadays its just as easy to emulate the dc version

Last time I tried to emulate Ikaruga it was pretty glitchy (graphicswise), is it better now? (Also hilarious how small the game is vs. .iso size :D)

Really want to play Mushihime-sama Futari (after seeing the "hardest boss fight ever!" videos of it, the non-Futari I have on PS2 is not enough!) but no xbawks. :( Also if I had one I'd love to play Death Smiles, really not a horizontal scroller guy but that one looks $$$

depends which dc emulator you run, not too sure which is the best atm as my netbook doesnt run it that great. but last time i tried it on a pc it played fine. just buy a dreamcast off ebay for £20, as long as its made before a certain date they play copies straight off the cd.

currently playing DeathSmiles (USA) retail release for Xbox360.. good fun and lots of replayability. Cave usually does not dissapoint, and they have an arcade port coming to XBLA soon (forget which).

Guwange is coming to xbla, pretty nice shooter.

just so you know, dodonpachi dai-ou-jou and ketsui are playable in mame with a patch now.
sound is a bit messed up but runs very well

I've been playing ketsu for almost a week, best shmup ever! The sound is 90% fixed with the latest patch and espgaluda should be available on 24-25th.

Decided to start playing these again.

Got my first 1CC... On espgaluda 2 on the iPad :) but my score was really shitty so dunno how scoring system works on it. Looked at some strategies on the shmup sites but not sure how they relate to the iPhone version with it's different control scheme unless I use the one with all the buttons? Using the basic one at the mo.

Next up is mushihimesama for the 360 which is currently on it's way to me. Will probably buy 360 espgaluda 2 now it's also on a jap platinum release and then dodonpachi when the euro version comes out.

You already played Jamestown? Cant really tell how it compares with these japanese titles, but me and my mates had great fun.
