or maybe not since the times of raid 5 are over (average failure rate is like 1 bit in 1 TB which means you most likely have 1 error in every drive = can't recover the data if one drive in the raid5 dies = raid5 is worthless)

I have a dead sata drive too, but 750 gig. It gives me the "bad drive" error when I try to boot up with it plugged in, and if it does successfully boot up, it will just freeze windows after a few minutes. Is it totally dead or any chance of fixing it?

best procaution you can take is to just boot up from a different hd and copy the data on the broken hd onto something else (the boot hd for example) and then go on search ;)
You might want to rebuild the MBR (after! you done the above) and see if it still crashes ;)

yeah i've done that and formatted (it wasn't my main drive to begin with). What is MBR?

master boot record... but if you formatted it that wouldn't matter anymore (because as far as I know that also gets removed and rebuild with a format, but I'm not a hd expert).

dont buy a cuda if they have a back plate covering the pcb, they over heat and only last a few months

checked the cable? my drive has a terrible connector and the sata cable that came with my mobo doesnt fit very well, i replaced it and the drive was fine

can just use a single molex to power it, having a splitter for a fan etc can stop any drive working correctly if your psu is getting old

Let me guess, it's a 7200.11 or ES.2 (most likely ST31000340AS)? Unless you update the firmware the Barracuda has a 40% failure rate. Meaning it will work fine for a while but then brick itself.

And yes, the drive sucks which is why it is so much cheaper than any other drive of similar size.

Yes, if you read through it you'll notice that basically every time you boot you have a 1 in 256 chance of bricking the HDD. So it's bound to happen sooner or later.

The problem can only occur if a power cycle initialization occurs when the Event Log is at 320 or a multiple of 256 thereafter. Once a drive is in this state, the user will not be able to resolve/recover existing failed drives.

So if the event log is at a multiple of 256 when a power cycle initialization occurs (boot or reboot), the hdd will shut itself down permanently.

barracuda drives have 2 boot sectors, 1 as backup, your suppose to be able to get a warning tool if the first has failed, never found it like smart hdd tools

they're the best drives is why they're cheap, most people and servers use them

+you can make that nas with some £50 ebay junk and a athlon xp with a few £5.50 pci sata expansion cards

Well, it is a firmware issue, if you update it you won't have that specific problem. However, they are still sold with the bugged out firmware that has a 1/256 chance to kill the drive every time the drive is booted.

Arguing that they won't have this issue since they have two boot sectors is pointless, as the warning was announced by Seagate themselves. The drive doesn't fail per se, it just goes into failsafe mode and thus you can do nothing with it, the data is there its just unreachable.

a backup bootsector and a warning tool to let you know when 1 is corrupt that would normally equal a dead drive, is always good to have.. while SMART, is just like having fat32 and crosslinked clusters
