There's nothing positive about Brain drain. Although I read in the past two years due to a booming economy in Poland people who came back outnumbers those who went away for the first time in a long time so maybe it's more like Brain Gain at the moment for you guys.

There's a colossal difference between brain drain and moron drain. Of course saying that only those people went away is a generalization but a great majority of them weren't highly educated.

Between 1.2M and 2M people left Poland. If you're referring to craftsmen leaving as moron-drain then even them leaving doesn't have a positive impact on the economy/society. And if they were leaving due to instability and poor wages I doubt there was anything keeping the highly educated people like doctors from leaving with them, although I don't have the statisticis for that: you can't possibly paint a good picture of this.

There are other than economic factors when it comes to migrations and the bigger wage you get, the more important those factors are if you're about to leave a country. Let's just assume that university graduates (as highly educated) earn a salary allowing them to fulfil basic needs but nothing too fancy. Those will be less encouraged to migrate, as opposed to people who have little to no chance of getting a job and, therefore, earning money. That's why the majority of emigrants were poorly educated. If they get a job abroad, they do contribute to the "host" country's GDP but they send or bring back a part of their savings and eventually spend it in their fatherland (provided they go back).

The term 'brain drain' is virtually exclusively reserved for scientists, not blue collar workers.

I'm sure the majority of emigrants were blue-collar workers but you still can't act is if you weren't hugely affected by educated people like doctors leaving in the masses aswell.

Yeah, especially since doing menial work abroad will pay them more than doing whatever it is they've been learning to do at school in Poland. Most poles that went to the UK are, actually, young students, not the uneducated, societal refuse that decided to try their luck elsewhere.

I didn't realize it was such a significant amount ;o but on the other hand the number is probably spoiled by part-time jobs. Off the top of my head I can recall 16 people I know who went away and 2 of them stayed abroad.

There's a harsh joke that in order to wash up in UK you have to possess a diploma from a Polish university. Hopefully we'll catch up in the next decades and such jokes will be unfounded.

Most of them have a diploma witch really doesn't matter at all. In Poland basically every person between 19 and 25 studies something - and by that u can imagine that a large % off those studies ain't good and don't lead to anything useful. You won't get any real job with most of the degree from those studies.

Basically, if u are smart and not lazy u will get a good well payed job in any country (including Poland), but if u are not so smart then it is easier to get a job witch actually pays u something in Britain (at least I guess).

And I don't know any good doctors or specialist witch left Poland to get more money - trust me, they are well payed here.

You won't get any real job with most of the degree from those studies.

Still, if you have a degree you usually don't have to work like constructions. I'm guessing the biggest barrier is the language, it's much easier to find a comfortable job in a country where you speak the language fluently.

This says the average doctor in Poland earns £350/m and the one's leaving are the highly educated ones, looking for not just better pay but better standard of living in the broader sense for their families. That's like twenty-times less than you can make in countries like Germany, Holland or Scandinavia. Granted this article was written almost five years ago and things have since been moving up in Poland with a booming economy, and I'm sure the pay has to be considerably higher today. But saying Poland hasn't been hugely affected by highly skilled people leaving in the past decade is ridiculous.

This has been discussed in my own country recently, why should doctors that study abroad for ten years come back and settle for less pay than they can get abroad?

A negative net migration is never a good thing for a society.
