Fair enough, but from what james and joe said in the commentary it was stermys config he was using. If it were only a setting in coollers cfg I'm pusseled why it was changed as he def would have that setting in his config as the default setting is 1 and coollers is 0.

But the mistake I'm pointing out, you obviously didn't get this so I'll say it again; It's clean plates after these 2 failed t7 games, cooller is offering a rematch, that's his mistake including losing t9 and ztn.

Well, it wasn't coollers fault, don't blame av3k for this, blame the ESL admins for not doing their job.

apparantly quakelive keeps some settings when they aren't written differently in the next player's autoexec.

So, the wrong timer was a remnant from stermy's config, while everything else was cooller's config (graphics, keys, etc.)

How bout doing a /cg_ and push tab and you get all the settings. It should not take 3 munutes to figure this out and the game should not have been restarted. Av3k got a bad spawn, then he gets an even worse spawn. and this pisses him off even more.

And when so frustrated you can say anything, especially if you can't talk sincerely and have to half-lie in front of cameras. They mostly lie in front of cameras when asked how they feel I'm sure. I don't know about you, but I prefer seeing somebody speaking honestly instead of lying that it's ok that he lost, even though he is clearly not ok and frustrated like hell.

At IEM Dubai when Cypher said that he wasn't enjoying the tournament that much I thought he was impolite, but after seeing this event I changed my opinion. Carmac kept asking players how they felt after their matches, and I kept disbelieving many of them. Why say that everything is great and you're content when it's written on your face that you're not. It only makes sense if you can deceive people, but you can't if you're close to crying =)

Yep. Stermy, avek, cooller, cypher and rapha spam stupid shit during games and I hate it.

I do smileys and maybe a dumb bind in games also, and when other players do it I understand. But if it's an important game, I use cg_teamchatonly 1. I have 0 and 1 bound on Mouse4 and 5, so I can switch. That way I can play a game and they can say all the stupid shit they want, it won't matter since I can't see it.

I always loved czm's bind: nice, each time his opponent did a mistake, but didn't end up dead. Like shooting a rocket at their feet or missing a crucial jump.

Might be an idea to ban smilies in game as some people spam this way too much --> K1llmas to name an example.

It is not immediately obvious that there even IS a setting that changes timer direction, so Cooller probably doesn't have it in his config, so it was whatever the previous player on that PC used.
I don't see Cooller's fault here. For example, if you sit at PC and previous user set up the keyboard shortcut so that pressing W button will reboot PC, would it be your fault that you didn't check the keyboard settings before game?

I dunno. is stermy's and coollers sensitivity the same, is the accel the same? Why isn't coollers cfg excuted befor he starts playing. I really find it hard to believe cooller doesn't notice something is wrong with his setup.

I repeat it more clearly again:
1. Someone played at that PC and used backwards timer (not necessarily stermy, Cooller just calls backwards timer "stermy's timer").
2. Cooller sat at the PC next and loaded his config. Hi did not have cg_levertimerdirection command in his config, because he didn't even know that such command exists when he wrote it. It's not his fault, players are not obligated to know every obscure super-rare command for unusual things. E.g. what if there is some command that turns the image upside down, how are you supposed to know about it if you never even thought that someone would want to have their screen upside down? And there is no official documentation from id describing all the commands.
3. Because cg_levertimerdirection was not changed by Cooller's config, it was left at its previous value, i.e. counting backwards
4. Cooller couldn't be able to know that beforehand because timer isn't enabled in warmup.
So nowhere it was Cooller's fault.

it's happened to me a couple of times before... when i was still in the process of sorting out my cfg. i actually don't think stermy's cfg is what caused the problem but that the timer is reverse by default if i'm not mistaken.

edit: just checked and reverse timer is indeed the default. so in all probability it wasn't stermy's cfg causing the problem.

iirc, back in the OSP days, if someone's CFG was too large (more than 16kb or so) some cvars wouldn't execute correctly. i could be wrong though.

they fixed this a while back, so there is not a 16kb limit to the cfg as it was in q3. Not sure though how big it can be.

Still I've never heard of that kind of bug before, maybe someone should check with id about this.

Depends. If stermy uses leveltimerdirection 1, and cooller exec's his config, and he doesn't have that command in his config, QL will use the last value it had inputted, aka what Stermy used. It's not a bug, but if Cooller puts that command in his config, he will never have that problem again :)

I also think we should clarify what we mean by luck. Obviously, the only truly random elements of the game are spawns (forming 90% of player complaints) and the occasional bug.

However, players frequently refer to luck as "something my opponent did without prior knowledge/certainty about the consequences that ended up benefiting him". Of course, this will be a subjective evaluation in any particular situation, but it certainly does happen. If you fire a spam rocket, for instance, knowing there's only a 5% chance your opponent will be there, the kill (if you get it) will be a result of your skill in knowing about the possibility, but it will also be lucky at that particular time.

1. cg_leveltimerdirection 0 is standard - only fucking stermy uses 1 and its gay as shit. You will never check this command, since nearly everyone uses default anyway. This command is ridiculous to find, what the fuck is 'level' doing in the name anyway? fucking stupid command. You can not tell what it is set to in warmup since the clock doesnt move, and no1 would even have this in their autoexec, since its just stupid to even bother with it.

I don't have a full understanding of the quake live spawn system, though I did play ut2k4 and q4 to a high level and I'm guessing it's similar.

So like on t9. Where there are 6 spawns, and most times it's only possible for the enemy to spawn at 3 of them. And after a kill I got 2 seconds to move myself so I can choose what 3 of them. Still random by your definition. But certainly not so random so you should stop caring about where you stand when the enemy spawn.

I'm not disagreeing with you completely. I just consider it more like poker - you can go into the turn a heavy favourite but lose the hand on the river purely by luck. That's not to say there's no skill in poker, but there is some luck involved, as there is in QL.

When cooller says luck he does indeed mean the initial spawns when the map starts. I found it sportsmanship for him to offer a rematch, but if this is supposed to be professional, he should not be allowed to offer one. Av3k outspawned him initially on that first map after the restart, but after that he beat cooller fair and square. Why he beat him is a different question and one that isn't relevant for the matter at hand.

One question begs to be asked though: What's this with the /time command? In this kind of environment it seriously affects your opponent and thus should not be allowed. You have a problem? Should've fixed it before, now deal with it.


Anyway, one love. Try to enjoy the show and not get too excited about it. This tournament was definitely some of the best quake i've ever seen.
