Regardless, it was refreshing to hear about the new features rather than what could already be seen. I had to turn off the audio half way through the last battle report. Yea I'm not sure if that will happen either, although the game does seem to be pretty far along. At least they are being meticulous. I just hope the beta period is fairly long so they can gather as much feedback from the hardcore players as possible. Developers aren't qualified to forsee where the gameplay will end up in the hands of top tier gamers :).

For now the nukes seem way too powerful. As to counter it you have to first locate where the nuke is going to be placed (which usually takes a while) then send an observer there plus send a high amount of units to kill the ghost as he has extreme healing from the dropship, all this in 15 seconds (which the opponent didn't manage even once during the 5 nukes). Too low cooldown (5 nukes in 4 minutes, wtf!?) and too low cast time, ghosts probably shouldn't be healed while nuking either.

The new cliff mechanics seem to favour Terran quite a bit as well. Such as reapers being able to jump up cliffs without vision yet stalkers cannot blink up the same cliff without vision. Also, Terrans can just instacast their scan, which has no counter, to get vision yet Protoss or Zerg has to move their slow, weak and easily counterable observers/overlords to get vision.

Plantery fortress seems a bit too powerful as well, it had 15 zealots, a bunch of stalkers and so on attacking it yet it refused to die all while getting 12 kills itself. It's basically like an extremely high damage, repairable, photon cannon with thousands of hp.

For now Terran seems by far to be the strongest while Zerg seem the weakest, hopefully that changes once beta is finished.

And yeah, the new units take up too much supply (Thors for example with 6 supply). The Terran was almost supply capped at one point yet his army was tiny, WC3 sized :(

Abusing the terrain with the ghosts still required transport, which the protoss player could have been scouting for, and countering with position. Protoss was capable of doing the same thing with the warp prism, but didn't use aside from the 1 time for show. I think that it's too hard to judge with the low skill of the players, and the fact that they script this out to begin with.

Sure but even in SC1 where the transport is way weaker you see drops in almost every progame, especially on LT.

Well, I think the current terran units are somewhat weak. The ability to do surgical strikes like this helps to break up the opponent's defense. Drops with tanks/etc seem to be almost... useless. =/

Terrans are already the only race with a unit made just for harassment, even though the Reaper seems quite weak except against workers.

Nuking out the entire base 5 times in 4 minutes seems quite excessive, buildings cannot dodge :(

I for one thinks that it is equally, if not more important, to balance the game at a amateur level compared to the pro level. There are millions of amateurs yet only a few dussin pro gamers, seems better if the game is balanced for the millions.

Tanks seem a bit weaker though as they don't have spider mines defending them while protoss has both blink and charge to get in close. However it was difficult to tell as he never built up any amount of them due to Marauders being so strong, seems like they will be the bulk of any Terran army, especially with their psi storm-like grenade ability.

SC wasn't popular for being balanced for newbs, so there's no reason for them to do it for SC2.

We didn't get to follow the path of the dropship, but I assure you it could EASILY have been scouted and stopped, or at least even mildly defended against with better unit/cannon positioning. I believe this change will merely make it so that the opposing player has to defend their bases a lot more, making Terran almost strictly a defensive/reactive race.

If you're giving the Terran enough time/resources to make dropships/ghosts instead of tanks/hellions/thor/etc.., and if you give him free reign of the map, he's going to destroy your base. Nukes are almost useless for defense, so you need to force him to defend, or fortify your defenses equally well.

Making a game unnewb-friendly worked in 90's (due to games not being as evolved at that point), see the success of Quake, SC, Ultima online etc. Please name one game that isn't newb friendly that has been a success in the past 5 years.

15 seconds is simply not enough time to react, in SC, no matter how good you are, you will be dropped upon. In SC2 they buffed the hp of the dropship several times over (plus making it an even more essential unit due to its healing), so you are bound to get even more drops on you. Saying that you can "easily" scout and stop every drop is just redicilous. Even in pro games where you see nukes (which very rarely happens), often you don't see which spot which position is being nuked within 10 seconds. Let alone move a huge number of units there and an observer.

I didn't like how there was no positioning to speak of either, just two big armies a-moving into each other, it could just as well have been a same race match-up in the fights. I really really hope that TvZ plays completely different compared to TvP but with the units as they are I fear it will play out almost the same.

Blizzard has so much fans that they could make the worst game ever and still sell 1 million of copies....

So a pro oriented game will sell good...

It hasn't worked in the last 5 years because the games are complete crap. Even still, I can name another one aside from SC - EVE online. Not that it matters, since SC2 couldn't compete with the newbie-friendly side of an RTS without dumbing down as much as WC3 or DOTA. What need to compete with their own product, though?

You're not supposed to react to a nuke - that's the point. You are being punished for not defending, for not pressuring the Terran enough to keep him from getting dropships/ghosts, or a combination of the two. Almost all units in SC2 are designed around defending base attacks, or breaking into a base by exploiting a defense weakness. How many new units can you name that are designed around offensive pushes?

Getting more than 1 or 2 expansions in SC2 seems almost like it's too dangerous, especially with the supply issues keeping you from huge armies. I don't even see Zerg going for more than 2, as it is. The gameplay seems to be designed to keep games at about 20 minutes, at most.

Eve online wasn't released in the past 5 years. I do not think there has been a game that wasn't newb friendly released in the past 5 years that was a success.

So according to you, everytime in a SC game where the terran builds a dropship or medic it is due to the other player playing poorly? I'd love to see you play if you never get a drop on you, considering the pros are dropped on in nearly every game.

It's the same now, just more focused. If you don't harass the opponent and keep them building units to defend with, they will just tech up. The game is fundamentally the same, but takes place over a shorter period of time.

Any pro player right now would have proper defenses up at 3+ expansions, along with map scouting. Did the protoss even have a single cannon at any of the expansions that got nuked/rushed to hell? It's likely that this will be just the same to defend against, or that Blizzard is intending the game to be strictly defensive. Units point to defensive, but it's hard to tell with these low-level battle reports.

edit: Oh, and EVE is 6 years, big deal. Again, it's the developers at fault, not the concept.

You may argue that its the developers fault, however, out of the tens of thousands of games released, you'd think at least one would get it semi right?

There were no turrents or photon cannons up, partly due to them being weaker compared to units now. Static defense overall has been made weaker (except for the overpowered planetary fortress). No mines, weaker cannons, weaker tanks, which sadly means that positioning is less important as well. In this game there was no positional map control to speak of, hopefully that was just a fluke or its added back into the final product.

It's not entirely the game at fault, but the support for the game. SC is still getting patches to this day.

Having some static defense is still better than sitting around waiting to get nuked, especially since he didn't even have a mobile defense. They were both making stupid little gimmick armies to show off the features, so the timing and situations were all unnatural.

You seem to think Terrans is über strong, did you miss what happened to the mauraders and helions when the protoss player casted psi storm? Why Terran seems strong is because David, playing Terran, is so much better. He played much better just doing alot of thing at the same time not giving the protoss player any time to get his shit together. And if he hadnt made the mistake of attacking the Planetary fortress he might have won the game.

You can't really tell which side is stronger from who is winning as you cannot see all mistakes they made or if they are just a poor player (David Kim is likely the better player here).

However, you can tell from the abilities and units how they will work out. Having 20 units attacking a base yet it not dying and manages to kill 12 units by itself for example seems too strong. Casting 5 nukes in 4 minutes seem to strong. Dropship not dying from 20 attacks seems too strong and so on.

Psi storm seems about the same strength as in SC1. The damage is afaik nerfed but the dps is increased due to it lasting a shorter period of time. The difference is that its much easier to dodge now due to the delay in cast time (the Terran didn't even try to dodge it).

Well i can tell that David is far the better playing because he can multitask much better. The protoss player makes many mistakes while David does not. If the players had been equal im guessing that the Terran wouldnt look as strong as they do now.

I dont now if you are talking about the attack on the planetery fortress in this case but it wasnt the fortress that killed all the units. The mistake was going after scv/fortress instead of attacking the units. As you can see he only casts one(?) psi storm, on scv. And then just focusing on the fortress instead of backing out and taking care of the terran units coming from behind. At the same time he has templars on the cliff and it appears he dosent use them either storming the scv there. So he made two mistakes at the same time there causing him to lose the game. If he had taken out the scv at both expansions and then going after the terran units he would have won the game.

Trust me when i say, David won because Protoss made crucial mistakes. Not because the game is unbalanced.

The fortress had 12 kills. It's basically an almost invincible expansion which seems way off.

It is not dodged easier. It may have a higher delay (it does have a delay in SC1 as well) and smaller radius but it lasts a lot shorter dealing about the same amount of damage.

Anyhow, These guys are scrubs compared to semi-pro/pro players. So until they get their hands on the game not that much can be said about balance without dying?!

He actually used it twice. He warped in some templars on the terran natural expansion cliff.

The nukes were barely used in sc/bw because, well they sucked. Usally your enemy scouts better and have counters, like an observer on a cliff to see the ghist dropping of. But the protoss player was just forced back and attacked at many places at the same time, thats why it was so powerful now. But i agree with the cooldown, it seemed way to short.

Observers can for an example patrol an area while with the scan you need to constantly use it and it only last for a short time, its the same as in sc/bw. I dont remember how it works with overlords in sc2 but as in sc/bw the ability that they can make you see cloaked units was "free" because you had to bould OL for the cap.

Planetery Fortress seemed so damn overpowered. But its still stationed and unless it gives massive damage its probably a mistake to attack it instead of going for the scw/units.

However, this is a poor indicator of what SC is like. Firstly, this isn't a finished game, secondly, these arent top player and finally this is a staged fight, it's ment to show us gameplay mechanics and units just in a different package.
