But c'mon people... did you REALLY think Avek stood a chance vs Stermy, with no with practice? I don't think he'll win with practice.

avek is world class in right up there with cypher & rapha, a small band of players that can win matches vs other top level players whether their aim is superior or not. Even in this match you had glimpses of his ballsy surprise +fwd attacks that none of the cautious aim-heavy on-liners competing in these fun cups can do. With just a little more sharpness in terms of precision and map knowledge, that will come with practice, he would have a very good chance of winning matches like this.

Stermy's probably the best ql player in eu at the moment and I think he will win many ql tourneys, but I still think he has some work to do to match the all round game skill of the very top dogs

Just watched all three. A few comments:

1. I think the nodm9 pretty much settled the timelimit debate: 10 minutes clearly does not prevent +back play. Now I'm not against +back at all, but it's illuminating that the chief argument for 10 min matches is that they encourage less defensive time-wasting - if anything, time-wasting is a much more useful tactic now. An early lead can be held for 5 minutes quite easily, where 10 minutes leaves ample time for a comeback.

2. Stermy was clearly playing Quake Live, whereas Avek still looked very much like a Q3 player. I don't enjoy Stermy's QL style, and I can see why so many are resistant to it, but you have to give him credit for doing what works. The fault is the game's, not his.

3. Fast (5 sec?) weapon respawn is a problem. What is this, FFA? Fast respawning removes an important element of map control from the game.

4. Combined with point 3, the ammo boost on weapon pickup is an even bigger problem. Has anyone else noticed how ammo crates are so much less important now? Or how virtually every fight devolves into mid-range LG because both players always have 2049280952785 cells?

5. The Quake Live site really needs a demo playback option. I'm getting tired of having to rename all my QL demos to stermy5, fooki7, spartie2, etc, just so I can remember the freaking file name.

6. Holy shit the hitboxes are huge.

In sum, Quake Live still needs some work.

there's a greasemonkey script which adds a "play demo..." link (serverbrowser...something). one of the most annoying things about ql really... because it would be so easy to fix for them now that we have this web based stuff already.

Timelimit doesn't make a difference to defensive tactics, that's the problem with duel the way it is structured.

well there is a difference between +back, taking some rails and stealing armors (which i think is absolutely fine and not boring) and just plain hiding. hiding isnt a long term option so it can only be applied in the last minutes. when you have tl10, it can be half of the game, when you have tl 15 it can only be one third of the whole time

well your making this too easy. i dont think that its just different, i think we can also judge if we like how the tl affects the game. im not even sure what i prefere, but we should at least discuss the pros and cons...
i think we can agree that 20+ mins is too long. its boring to play a long time when its obvious who is going to win and when its close, its hard to concentrate for such a long time without a pause. also bo3 matches would just take too long.
tl 10 on the other site makes every frag more important and allows us to maybe extend to bo5 matches or to finish tournaments in a shorter amount of time. also when the skill gap is noticeable, its definitely enough to show the better player without having to play for a long time although you already know who is going to win. on the other hand, as i see it, it also favors to play defensively for a big part of the whole time and decreases the amount of time both palyers are willing to fight for control. it also makes comebacks harder. (wich may or not be a good thing)
tl 15 is the q3 default. does this mean we have to use it? no. but it does mean that we know that it works.

so what is the better tl? i am not sure. but i guess tl 10 for publics and tl 15 for tournaments would be a good way to go.

I think polls on esreality about these sort of issues are rather pointless due to the q3 bias here.

And about comebacks. I think one of the biggest problems in quakelive (and all other quake's) is unbalanced maps. This is just a bad idea on the highest level. When the players are so close in skill. a opening spawn should not decide half of the match. One of the worst maps in this regard is dm6 (which is ironically one of the most played) and timelimit 10 only makes this worse.

I think all the maps should be as balanced as possible, in the sense that if the players are on opposite sides of the map they should have access to the same amount of armour (e.g. t4). This would make the games more fair, closer and as a result more interesting and not lead to these blowout scores between players of similar skill.

The spawn at gl feels worse on ztn now then it did in q3, anytime you get that you're pretty much down by 200 h/a at the start and sometimes if the other guy gets a certain spawn you cant get a single armor. It's ridiculous. t7 seems to be decent for the start. t9 the spawn right next to lg in the beginning can be very unfair. Pretty much a garunteed kill in middle with that one every time. dm13 I'm not sure, I haven't run into too many problems. Maybe once or twice but i'll have to play it more to see again.

they removed LG spawn. Closest is the middle of stairs, at lg/rl ammo spot (if it were q3, I think it's just rl ammo in ql)

I'd say the fairest "pairing" of spawns on ztn would be PG/YA vs RL/YA (low).

They don't need to be even in the way you suggest they just need to have starting spawns that allow even access at the start of the game to the same resources.

That's if you want to keep a timelimit based duel system which will always result in dead time and unfair results (luck spawns et cetera).

They should try to minimize the luck though

You could change the opening spawns, but when there is a uneven amount of armour on the map someone is always going to have a big advantage. They could make a map like dm6 ten times better by simply changing the red into a yellow armour. That way regardless of the first spawn (or later spawns) both players will nearly always end up with a even amount of armour.

Okay one will grab the mh and the other doesn't but that is acceptable..Right now when one player has both ra and mh control is simply too strong. And this player is usually able to grab the ya as well simply locking the entire map down.

Thats just outdated and bad game mechanics imho, which only exist due to historical reasons. If they really want quakelive to be a "sport" they should try to eliminate luck as much as possible making the game as fair as possible.

Saw this a couple of times happened not just at stermy-av3k dm13 map but aswell at dm6 spart-bodzo on bigfoot and theres dozens of other examples...the opposite player just gets fedup realising he cant make a comeback in the last 4-3mins and starts goffing around! :(

Going extremely defensive is risky, because you put yourself in situations where you give up control and you cant make frags, while your opponent can.
b100.death got away with it a few times, but this fails more times, than it is succesful. He also stopped playing like this later; and look what happened to lexer every time he started running ^^

I dunno, it placed him well in many, many tournaments including a great win in Holland.

It also lost Fatal1ty quite a few games in Quake 3 and UT2004.

If you hide well, then your opponent only has so many windows of oportunity to attack you with a decent chance of success.

While you criticise how duel works, I like its continuous nature. I like intelligent match openings, I like how one player very often has to assume the role of the "control underdog". I like how after a well-practiced match beginning, players are forced to analyse everything on the fly.

I just like duel the way it is, as long as the mid game is long enough.

The continuous nature need not be removed.

With more evenly balanced maps and the ability to choose starting spawns (alternating first picks), it would still play an important and interesting role. You, hopefully, will have removed the giant advantage a starting spawn can give you and you're left with the battle for control (just without fragging) which is the best bit, as opposed to 5minutes of biased fragging, 5minutes of even play and finishing with 5minutes of fragging.

Aaah, excellent video. I had no idea it was just a demo problem (probably shows I don't play the actual game enough).

Regarding 2, my point was that (as far as I've seen) Stermy takes QL's quirks into account more than other players - things like playing to the 10 min timelimit, whoring the weapons for ammo, choosing his attacks to take advantage of the changed weapon balance, etc. Avek still looks like he's playing Q3.

And as for 3, I'm not saying QL's LG is more powerful, I'm saying it seems to be used more often. And my guess is that this is due to the ammo problem.

i personally believe there is a somewhat noticeable issue, but just on lower pings. i used to not have any problems with the netcode, and i still don't think i can hit when lagging the crosshair behind my enemy the vast majority of the time, and, the vast majority of the time i'm playing with ~60-80 ping. i'm kinda confident that the times that i've noticed actual missed shots hitting is when playing on ~30-40 ping (swedish) servers.

still, people thinking they can draw conclusions from demos or speccing is part of the reason why there's so many people whining about the netcode, and why they're so vocal about it.

I don't think timelimit has anything to do with anything. The same tactics apply and work regardless of the timelimit.

If a player has control, the other player *should* be looking to take control back regardless of how much time is left. If the player is only up by one frag (whether there be 1 minute or 6 minutes left), it's his decision or not to attempt to take back control or just run-run-run.

I've seen the problem arise playing with 10 mins that when there is a bad spawn for a player at the beginning, and there still are bad spawn combinations no matter what the map :/. It can be extremely difficult for the down player to regain control. Sometimes it's taking almost the entire game to be the one in control. When they finally have it they are down 7-8 with 1-2 mins left. Making it virtually impossible to comeback. The extra 5 mins tends to allow for games like this to have a better balance of both players having more control.

Yeapp, there exists alot of fucked up starting situations in QL.

That should pretty much identify the main problem here :)

It seems to me that the same unfortunate spawns can happen in the last 5 minutes of a 15 minute match as would happen in the first 5 minutes of a game (regardless of the timelimit).

Luck happens to be apart of the game. And mostly all games (with chess, the only exception being someone who ignorantly makes a smart or a bad move without realizing it).

EDIT: If we're going to say that time means less bad-luck, then why not 20 minute duels? or 25? Then it becomes more about endurance of a player's ability to focus.

While this is a bad analogy, I think it represents a good concept to keep in mind. In olympic wrestling, players are given chances at both advantageous and disadvantageous positions. So couldn't we say a player that begins a game at a disadvantage should have just as much practice learning to RETAKE control rather than just learning how to KEEP it. There's just as much skill in both of these aspects of the game.

Advantageous spawns can happen at any time during a game. Same as unlucky spawns.

Start spawns only represent a fairly decent chance of who will take control first. But again, this is based on player experience/skill.

ur not really offering any good arguments for staying with 10 min tl. infact ur not even giving ones for not going back to 15. i could just as easily say that the only reason they went to 10 min tl for duels was because it was better for pub mode.

overall from what ive so far seen from the few high level cup games we've had, theres less swings in games with 10 min timelimits. maybe this is just me, maybe its the players mentality when they see that they only have to hold out for say 5 mins as opposed to 10 with slim leads. no matter what u say staying focussed enough to play defensive for 10 mins is a lot harder than doing it for 5. especially when its not ur natural state.

personally i think it should stay at 10 on pub servers, and 15 for tournies/priv servers. perhaps even make it voteable and/or configurable on priv servers.

I wasn't arguing for one or the other and I wasn't trying to offer any alternatives. I was pointing out that it seems negligible. Especially rapha's argument, to me, seems not to indicate any real difference between 10 and 15.

Saying that a start spawn should dictate a whole game is a bit of a surrender, at least it seems that way to me. The "better" player should know how to play his games from a disadvantaged position just as much as a a skilled player should play from the in-control (advantaged) position. My analogy of Olympic wrestling, I think, illustrates what I mean.

The only difference, in my opinion, between 10 and 15 minutes is the length of time a player can intensely concentrate on the game.

I think the bigger problem with +back in qlive is fast and powerful rockets compared to other weapons and slow movement. Powerful rockets work better in games like quakeworld and cpma where its much easier to attack because of the movement. If you look at the dm13 game for example it's almost impossible for av3k to attack when stermy just +backs and spams rockets.

Well, business is business. It's not like he is getting paid for doing nothing. I am quite sure there are a few fairly good teams who would like to have him in their roster. Also I reckon that he used to get on with his team management, especially Bas, pretty well (and I am quite sure he still does).

Nonetheless I also doesn't like this kind of behaviour but I think it's just more like acting than naturality. Yet (unfortunately?) it's one of the best ways of being successful. In the end don't forget that I might have not translated it properly (although I think this kind of attitude isn't anything new).

- pre-ESWC 2005 = Easy win for cooller
- ESWC 2005 = Comfortable Toxic win
- CPL Winter = Easy win for cooller
- WSVG Dreamhack = Easy win for cooller
- ESWC 2006 = both were shit but, cooller fourth above toxic
- Then cooller clearly stops playing and only occasionally turns up to a LAN (Kode5 wasn't allowed to play the final game and Quakecon he narrowly lost to toxic anyway...)

The "toxic vs cooller" rivalry thing is just ridiculous. In Q3 cooller was the far superior player and that was true in Q4 until he stopped playing too.

He missed tons of LANS, and when he did attend was clearly rusty and lacking practice. Just look at the performance drop from WSVG Dreamhack to ESWC.

Players go to tournaments all the time when they haven't been active, or stand little chance of actually winning. For a lot of them it's like a free holiday.

Yeah but even when he put the time in to practice a lot again (which he did last year), he didn't manage to win a tournament, or come close to it. (apart from an asus lan but pls..)
He might not have practiced Q4 much or at all but he sure practiced q3 like mad again.

I don't believe it is used that much for cooller since prior to Quake4 I can't recall it being used despite him losing (QLAN2 anyone?).

When true the inactive excuse is perfectly acceptable despite it implying the player is superior. The problem is of course, every top player likes to pretend that they never play the game (even though they just have ten billion aliases/QL accounts).

The most active players always win. Quake isn't big enough, nor competitive enough for any natural advantages to stretched to their maximum. The only way you'll ever get good at anything is, to quote the master, "practice, practice practice."

Imho making excuses for cooller is way bigger than for anyone else on this site, i'd even go as far as to say it has become an esr meme (COOLLER IS GOD, etc.), it probably wasn't before Q4 but nowadays its kinda ridiculous. Just look through all the event coverage posts from last year :)

Obviously the ppl that practice the more and more efficient will have better chances to win, never said smth else, but ppl excusing cooller loses with the argument that if he would still be practicing/caring he would rape <player> is simply BS, as we have seen the whole last year. And imho its also quite disrespectful for the winning player :<

i do not mind aveks attitude. it shows competitiveness and his desire to win. As you probably know not a lot of people actually make it to that level of quake. You need a high drive and a burning desire to win. No, matter what avek says he cares and wants to win every game or match he plays.

It's an exhibition, and av3k acts like a cunt, doesn't even try to give a good show, even if stermy was +backing av3k was a dickhead for saying "that's skill" after he gets 1 air rocket on stermy, then about 30 seconds later stermy gets 2 air rockets on av3k. Then GGing 3 minutes early in the last game. He said he didn't care about the match, but was obviously pretty sore.

first pro ql demo i watch and it looks very, very bad. I only watched dm13 and dm6 and both were really boring to get through.It looks like a 2001 demo. If this was supposed to be a showmatch, why the hell is stermy +backing at the 5 min mark??? And I don't think i've ever seen a 3-2 or smth frags demo in the 7 years i've been playing the game.
