ESR - What's your favourite game of all time?

I was wondering which game everyone liked best.

Personally beside QW and Q3, which i'm still playing, i really loved Final Fantasy 7 the most - its the best game i've ever played through.

civ 4 is really good, but for me.. after a while gets bored, i`ve played all those modes and expansions etc.. i think the warrios expansion is really interesting, you can be vikings :D but even.. bored :(

Aye, played through Secret of Mana 1/2 several times with friends. I even played Secret of Evermore when it was released (which wasn't nearly as good) and at this very moment I'm playing through Secret of Evermore yet again with the recent two player hack, so my girlfriend controls the dog :)

UO was extremely good however I fear those days are lost forever, with all MMOs taking inspiration from the lackluster WoW. It just feels like a step back with its easy access, limited social interaction, no crafting to speak of, no exploring, no death penalty, no pvp loot and no secrets.

There are a few bright spots though, I'm looking forward to trying the Swedish created Mortal Online once it reaches beta, as that game will feature full pvp loot.

Even though I did not play much during the Ultima Online era myself, I do agree that these days most MMO's just become virtual chat rooms.

But I also think that its hard, because people need more content these days. I remember playing Ragnarok Online back in 2001, even if its just a (bad) grinding game today, it was even more so back then, but it was still a game played by lots of people - not whining about how they could not get this and that because Awesome Joe had more time to play..

UO was fun although I quit once they brought in the nice world/evil world BS. The global plot stuff was awesome and could have done with more player interaction or allowing more initiative. They didn't use players as well as they could have, when the Ultima 7 starting town (can't remember the name, it is surrounded by a fortress wall) was invaded by zombies in the world plot loads of us turned up to defend it but there were no zombies, then suddenly after server reset the town is abandoned and full of zombies with no player interaction. A pitched battle would have been so much better.

i agree, full pvp/pk everywhere, and no overpowered uber-rare gear.. that's when it was the most fun :P i never played the official shard tho, just freeshards.. me and my friend ran the first ever linux based (OUX) freeshard back in 2000 when everyone was hosting shards on shitty windows servers with windows-based server software :P

FFV cause it was the first FF I played.
FFIV hardtype because it was the only slightly difficult FF I played.
FFVII really needs no motivation.
Seiken Densetsu I, II and III are all up there.
Zelda I and III for sure, especially the first one due to nostalgia.

I loved Goldeneye before I knew how to play shooters.
Quake III before 2002 was pretty awesome (thrufloors, dm6tmp, no xerp, etc.)

I was gonna go on, but I now realized I'm supposed to pick only one game? Well fuck that.

agreed keks, Final Fantasy 7 is without any doubt the game I enjoyed the most of all time. Played it through a few months ago and it's still awesome :D

Maybe you're more comfortable with puzzle game as the genre. Still in order to get high points it's all about the strategy.

i played it on a emulator (arbex / xebra) - the only thing that was a bit different was the effect when you encountered an enemy - looked a bit messed up but i can live with that
on the plus side you have the ability to instantly save your game whenever you want to - for example in crucial "random" sequences when trying to get your final limit breaker for cloud (in the casino - you have to have like 65000 points in the battle arena - for that you need around 20-30 fights in which you have to face 10 or so enemies in a row and before every enemy you have to play some one-armed bandit machine which decides what happens to in the next fight - for example getting poisoned, lose 10% strength, lose 20% max hp, make you small so you only inflict 1 damage, break your weapon, make you silent, steal your inventory etc - anyhow this is annoyingly hard and based upon pure luck and that sutff stacks up - lose your inventory before your first round and you quite possibly won't be able to beat all the enemies - lose your weapon and it'll take ages to beat everyone - thanks to this saving feature you can always reset the scene and try again - saved me a ton of time i think)
or when there's dungeons without savepoints etc etc

Yea I know what emulators are capable off, I just never found a PSX emulator that was stable enough (to not run around and save every minute in case of crashes, or actually have them not being able to process some parts of games, hence you're stuck).

Playing FF6 on snes9k atm, even tho I have the original, its in Japanese :p.

Where can I find the emulator you're using? Never heard of it and I have like 7 PSX emulators on my harddrive right now that I found in some mega torrent. Haven't tried them all obviously but if that one works for you I'd rather just start with that :)

the official homepage of the guy "Dr. Hell" who wrote this is in japanese - this or this should be sort of up2date (at least at the time i wrote this comment (same package, different links)
works just fine with me and doesn't have any lags or anything (core2quad q6600, 4GB ram, geforce 8800gt)
i haven't found a _good_ ps2 emulator - tried tons of em but the performance was always rubbish - either the performance is ok and you play without sound or you get sound but most likely you'll just have around 10 or less fps

for ff7 or ff8 downloads i'd suggest checking on piratebay i got it pretty quick from there - tried 4 different downloads for the pc edition but even with their patches it'd throw errors from the installer or some stuff like that (its officially for win95/98/se) - would've loved to have it run on pc since there's a "high res fix" somewhere - the emulated one on the other hand worked just fine (even tho you're fixed to 640x480 resolution - you can resize the window but you just see the tons of edges etc)

yep i did - see the screenshot (2 golden chocobos) one from breeding and one in exchange for the "desert rose" which you get for beating ruby weapon from the guy in "kalm"
beating emerald weapon gives you the "earth harp" which you can trade for a set of master materia with the same guy (master-summon, master-command and master-magic - one materia that gives you the abilities of _ALL_ other materia of that kind: for example the master summon just takes 1 slot and you can summon all spells with it - even knights of the round for which you normally need the golden chocobo to go to the invisible island in the upper right corner of the worldmap)

I forget the exact names of the materia now, but you pair mime with the counter materia that does whatever attack it's pair with when you get hit. Then pair KOTR with the materia that gives you life back on casting a spell. Cast KOTR once and go get something to eat/drink/etc while you counterattack with KOTR each time you get hit, and heal yourself for 9999.

... that or just put a master counterattack materia in all slots and counter hit him 20 times every time he hits you.

on the plus side you have the ability to instantly save your game whenever you want to

Wanted to bring this up briefly again..

If you use such a feature in an emulator, be damn sure to know when you have saved (and save on another slot before loading). I just lost 3 hours of progress because I fucking raged after getting petrified with only one person in the party. That would've set me back maybe 20-30mins due to not saving in-game, but since I raged I quickly hit the load saved-state button, turns out I had not used that in a LONG while, so I was almost 3 hours back.

And here's the tricky part - When you load the saved state (at least in this particular emulator) it will overwrite the actual saved data for that game right away and voila, you just got pretty damn grumpy..

I skimmed through the thread and didn't bother to mention the ones I already saw (liek ss2, fallout-series) and just basically threw the ones on the tip of tongue in...

The Dig's possibly the strongest primarily non-humouristic point n click adventure, I agree with you that it should be there.

Full Throttle is imo one of the weakest adventures of Lucasarts, it's just so short and comes off bit unfinished to me.

I've never beat FF7. They're good games but Jesus Christ the design flaws almost ruin the whole game experience.

You can't even take a shit in FF-series without getting random encounter. Why do they have to occur every two steps, seriously? They're just soooooo annoying.

Also the save spots. Why can't the game autosave after big boss, before a cutscene? The whole cutscenes you only worry about when you can save your damn game and they get ruined.

FF7 I remember being stuck and not knowing what to do next and dropping the whole game because of the combined frustaration, I didn't have net or guides to help so they really got into nerves.

Maybe if you can cheat from a walkthrough they could be smaller nuisance but when you don't know how to solve a puzzle or find the right place you really want to throw the controller to the wall because of them.

I think you are the first person that says a Final Fantasy game is hard :P. The only place I ever got tired of was that last Castle in FF8, where I got through it, fought the last boss for awhile, died and never booted the game again.

Also, FF8 had something to remove random encounters on the world map at least heh.

FF7 had the same. There was a materia that lowers the possibilty of random encounters.
While i agree that it makes you cringe from time to time, when you rly don't wanna level up, i found it fun to smash 500HP enemies with 99.999HP hits. :D

The battles are the only game mechanic the games have and they are pure turn based strategy (In most instances). They are totally devoid of depth but that's still what they are.

I always find it weird how so many people think of Japanese RPGs are such amazing games when from a purely game perspective they are incredibly shallow and simple.

The only reasoning I can think of is a lot of peoples first introduction to gaming was via consoles which were nearly all Japanese, the graphics/cutscenes and they liked the stories (graphics + story > books!).

Should be noted that many of the Snes RPGs, including Earthbound, was never released in Europe. Thanks to different TV signals, region-locked consoles, different electric outputs and import customs it's an expensive, complex chore for europeans to legally play those games.

i think you simply get too mighty in both games, it's just that in kotor 2 this occurs really early, whereas in kotor 1 you're more vulnerable in the earlier stages of the game. this makes kotor 1 more challenging and the feeling (and reward) for leveling up is way better also (as the relative increment in power becomes more important.)

not to mention that kotor 2 lacks the "new items" sub meny, which is insanely annoying.

lastly, although the point isn't generally valid, i guess nostalgia plays a role in my preferences.

I just replayed Half-Life 1, surprisingly, it's aged well. (I never finished it the first time I played it) The graphics never bothered me, but I did find the final alien level a bit time consuming and wasteful when the rest of the game was so awesome.

The final fight was also retarded due to bugs etc. You land up restarting over and over again. Game took around 9 hours, 2 of which was the final battle.

With regards to Half-Life, I must admit that I think that Half-Life 2 is better (and the Orange Box(HL2 +ep1+ep2) is best.) When it comes to the best single player FPS ever, it just has to be Quake. Nothing destroyed my free time while I was still at school, like Quake did. It was literally mind blowing when I played it for the first time. Of course, whether this is objective or not... is hard to say.

Other special mentions: Outlaws, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, Duke 3D, Portal.

It's a pity the FPS market is so stagnant... and that I hate military type shooters. (90% of them)

Dark Forces was fucking incredible first time round I still remember the first movie of the dark troopers being launched from the ship.

Tie-Fighter was also a brilliant game, and the only flight sim I have ever played.

I bought it on steam a little bit back during one of their 'mad' sales, played through it and it still holds up.

The graphics aren't even in question for me since it's the era of that type of game (Doom etc). The graphics are still great today though purely because of the spirit of the game. The levels are designed so they make you feel you're in the Star Wars universe. The story and gameplay is perfect. It's awesome
