I'll start Fallout 3 when I'm done with Fable II, which I've enjoyed a lot so far (considering I usually hate RPGs). What's wrong with Fallout 3?

Far Cry and Dead Space aren't my cup of tea, but I'll try the latter.

FC2 looked like the story was shitty, just like Crysis, but was it at least pretty and somewhat of a pissaround fun kind of game?

I watched my housemate play it for an hour or so, it looked pretty dull to me.

Although I did like some elements of the interface design etc......

it can be very hit and miss, if you're just after popular well known stuff you would manage otherwise stick to tackers

you'll get all the tv stuff most scenes release to usenet or other people will put them up

movie content varies, again you'll find everything from the scene and stuff that's popular regardless of age and if not it'll come round in a very short while usually

lesser known stuff is also on there although if you're after the really obscure stuff karagarga is your best bet but you''ll be surpised at what comes about

Give Astraweb a shot. I just switched from Giganews to Astraweb because they recommended that 11$ a month offer in SA (unlimited downloads, SSL, 20 connections, 160 days of retention) and I don't think I'm going back.

Tried it out now, and boredquit the game about 30 minutes in.

Graphics seem a bit less real than Crysis. The long grass doesn't look at all believable, and I couldn't seem to enable motion blur. Also, uncontrollable mouseaccel. =(

btw fc2 isn't by crytek now. it's by ubisoft or ea. and the engine isn't the same of as used in crysis. think it's a modified far cry engine.

most friends playing f3 say it's pretty meh.. i won't bother downloading it anyway since i don't like that oblivion rpg style.. fc/crysis hype went completely beyond me, so there's just dead space left which actually caught my attention a bit but i can't find any time and will to play sp games, i had to force myself to play bioshock because i liked that game and it still took me almost year to finish with months of pauses :p once you go mp..there's no way back

FC2 - too much similarity, you don't feel much progress, the story seems slow and bit arbitrary, but I heard it's going to get better. sniping and combat is fun. It's irritating that new enemy patrol is conceived to a camp after you leave it from thin air, I hope that shit would of been history in games. Good-looking engine. Imo it's something like 85/100 game.

F3 - download slow/order hasn't arrived yet :/ Fallout 2 is the best sp game ever, so I'm waiting this like a kid waits santa claus.

I've been playing Farcry 2 for a little while, on and off I've maybe logged 2 hours.

It's a fun game to mess around with, but I would have been angry if I paid money for it.

Fallout is in the queue.

Dead Space is awesome so far, although the PC controls are basically like trying to play with your feet (wait until you get a gun and try to aim- it makes you feel like a retard).

I guess they intentionally dumbed down the aiming in the PC version because they wanted the difficulty experience to rival the joysticks on the home console versions (they did a similar thing with Shadowrun, and look what happened there)

All in all I'm really only happy with Dead Space though tbh.

Funny you mention BG2 - my favourite game of all time too.
My bro and I played it coop through twice.

First time as ranger/cleric I think but the second time as straight mages (with xp cap removed and the Baldurdash fixes for AI and stuff)

The second time was more fun because as high level mages you had all sorts of different strategies you could try. There were a few encounters though which took 5 or 6 attempts before we managed it (Kangax for one)

I haven't seen anything that matches BG2 yet , although 'The Witcher' comes close ...

to judge a game like fallout 3 after 30 mins is pretty stupid. this is a 50-100h game like oblivion. Besides, you should also consider actually 'buying' a game. Makes you appreciate it more.

I'm not talking about games where you need a valid key for online play. I talk about games like F3, crysis with emphasis on sp. So if my statement still doesn't apply to you that would mean:

1. You download the game
2. You play it enough to realise that it's worth buying
3. You stop playing it and buy it

or

1. You keep playing the downloaded one
2. Play through it
3. And afterwards you buy it to show your appreciation

It doesn't matter if a lot of people do it that way, it's a completely fair way to do it with the kind of crap that's getting passed off as a game these days. I download a game to justify the money I will pay for it, and I find all too often that I would have paid for an expensive coaster. I'm not bothered too much by spending $5 on a movie at the theater to find out that it was crap, but $50 is far too much to justify the risk.

Games seem to be one of the only products that people buy that aren't a finished product. If you bought a car and it exploded, randomly didn't work, was too big for you, had incompatibilities with gas, didn't display the speed correctly, didn't go as fast as advertised, jerked while accelerating, or was missing a wheel... you wouldn't touch it. Hell, even if you DID buy it, there are laws here that protect you for 30 days. If they existed for games, EA would go out of business in a day

I'm not saying that dl is generally wrong. And if you apply what you say it's totally ok for me. I don't buy tons of games either. But I've never bought one that turned out to be utter crap. I read previews/reviews and in case of F3 I was sure that it's going to be fine since I liked oblivion and Fallout in general. EA as a game developer is questionable, no doubt.

As an example, Far Cry 2 has no demo planned, so the only way for me to test it is to download it or just roll the dice on buying it. I have now tried it, and found that the game was just terrible, and I couldn't even bring myself to play it for more than about 30 minutes.

I bought QW back in the day, and enjoyed it. When Q2 came out, I bought it as well, based on how much I liked Quake. Liked Q2, so I bought Q3... I bought Doom 3 expecting it to be like Doom 2, and I bought Quake 4 expecting it to be like Quake 3. Due to both of them being massive failures, I couldn't bring myself to pay for another game from id until after I gave it a thorough evaluation.

If everyone went out and bought Far Cry 2 (or D3/Q4), the developers might think that it was a good idea to follow the same design principles and philosophies with Far Cry 3 (or whatever other project they are working on) and we'd all be stuck in a loop of feeding them money in order for us to hope that it'll be better.

I guess you mean as a publisher. The games are developed by their subdivisions or other developers, Ea's business field is more in the department of paying geeks' coke bills and planting it's own stickers on the covers. I personally don't see a reason to pick out EA, more or less everyone in the industry have had shitty releases in it's history.

As a publisher, they put developers under more strict release dates. Activision just got done doing the same shit to Blizzard by making them release the expansion to WoW LONG before it was ready.

Yet, goody two-shoes Blizzard chose freely to sign such a deal with big bad Activision.

Just an example. EA is FAR worse, as they seem to want to pump out sequels multiple times a year.

If I felt it was good I would buy it. If developers still released good demos before release then I expect a lot of people would just download the demos then decide.

Wrong. Only the developers that still develop pc games complain about piracy. If you didnt notice: the amount of pc games published has decreased steadily in the last years. This has, of course, absoluteley nothing to do with piracy :P

The volume of games released is due to the fact that games take exponentially longer to make, and there is less room for original content. The last few developers who I remember complaining about piracy in interviews were id and Epic - about Q4/D3 and UT3. Console piracy is nearly as bad as PC piracy now, but the developers prefer to ignore it to keep attention away from it. You don't want to admit publicly that your product can be stolen unless you need an excuse.

Like some of these reports state, piracy isn't the only reason for lack of support for pc games, but it's definitely a reason. Sure console games are pirated as well. But it's not as easy as it is on pc. Another reason why consoles have more support is that they are more widespread. But actually this speaks against pc gaming. Due to the wider spread it is even more unlikely that developers keep on supporting the pc. And the piracy just adds even more to the negative image. So there's w/out a doubt a correlation between lack of support for the pc and piracy.

Most people downloaded Crysis just to see if their computer could handle it, and it couldn't. Why buy a game after you try it if you can't run it? Everyone was scrambling for it.

Consoles are just as easy to pirate, for the most part. Microsoft has gone out of their way to try to prevent it, but really, it's pretty easy. I can mod a PS2 with 3 rolled up balls of toilet paper and a piece of tape. Consoles like the DS/PSP have brought out mostly piracy of older games, but in bulk quantity.

Developers who try to switch to console support are silly, as eventually you'll just force the hackers to find clever new ways to hack/distribute your console games. Hell, with how closely consoles are to being a PC right now, with the progression to simply becoming a PC with a spiffy case, and with the movement into digital distribution, consoles will soon be worse than PC.

played Spore through three times to see if I missed something cool. I'm 65% done with Far Cry 2. I'm four hours into Fallout 3 and maybe five hours into Red Alert 3. They're all crap damnit.

crysis sucked balls - it did look good and there was enough action to keep you there for the 4-5 hours you needed to play through it

farcry 2 is like the most monotonous, bug-loaded piece of shit i've seen for at least 5 years
i have tons of bugs like: when you 'unlocked' a guard post the enemies aren't supposed to spawn there again from what i've heard - yet they do, 1 in 4 savegames doesn't work and sends me right back to the desktop, at least after 2 hours you randomly get kicked to the desktop and the game is gone. the missions are completely the same - ALL the time - go to location A, take order: go to location B (on the other side of the world) and kill person X. its like that all the fucking time - you could probably play through the whole game in 2-3 hours if you weren't walk/drive around 99% of the time + i hate the ingame ads from Jeep
however, i get all raged about this game but when i started it i walked around, did 2 missions or sth and (i was already around half an hour into it) i "used" some MG-nest at a guard-post - i couldn't leave it again - for some reason i can only use the mounted MGs on the trucks but not any other one - if i use it i can only hope to get injured so i can heal myself which makes me leave the MG - no key works to leave it just like that - so however i hadn't saved and had to play all that 30minutes-run again :F
to the grafics: the environment looks great and they've seemingly spent 99% of their money on that engine because the character movements are like 5 years ago, the enemy-AI is worse than doom 1 and what the fuck were they thinking with that "old weapons break a lot" or the "no we won't do a working health system like crysis or cod4 have, we'll give you an annoying piece of shit were you have to take cover when you're wounded to remove the bullet and THEN heal yourself" and they did - seems like it was still a little too hard for some people so they added you a "friend" who comes along when you're dead to get you out of there and kill the enemies - basically you don't need any weapons - only a truck with a mounted MG - you don't even have to leave it - just jump to the MG, kill everyone and keep on driving...

Fallout 3 was basically Oblivion with new textures. It was a good game, but not a good fallout game.

+ great engine

- takes itself too seriously
- dialogue is often uptight and generic
- 80% of the game seem to be about combat
- too little fallout-inspired content
- where are the big cities fulfilled with mafia, hookers, wacky NPCs?
- where are the cultural references, funny scenarios, black humor, interactive quests?

I'd give it around 92 as a game in overall, but 70 as a fallout game.

Dead Space is pretty cool once you get used to that "misplaced" 3rd person camera

+ low fov (maybe for scare effect?)
+ aweful mouse input (awesome console port)

I played RE4 without mouse and it felt so much better.

you get used to the fov, but the mouse input can be really aweful sometimes.

But these are just some minor points which fade to the whole awesomeness of the game.

Weapons are cool
Engine is pretty good (even looks good on my old machine)
Story is not bad
Atmosphere is pretty immersive
Upgrade and store are fun
Stasis and Telekinesis stuff is ok


Besides that the sound of the bench is soooo awesome that this alone makes the game good.

To be fair, no single player game is good when you play on normal mode, it's only on expert level when it get's hard i can get sucked into it. I thought far cry was pretty bleh on normal, but on expert it was a completely different game.

Having just completed Crysis: Warhead, I can say that it was a lot of fun. Still probably gonna try out Fallout 3.

Get a NES Emulator and a SNES Emulator.
On NES Megaman 2 & 3, Super Mario Bros. 3 rock.

On SNES: Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Earthworm Jim, Super Mario World rock.

Also Mame Emulator: And Get Street Fighter Alpha 2 & 3 ROMS.

Also good old DOS Games like Doom 1 & 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake 1, Blood, Shadow Warrior.

Blizzard has a cheap 4 games set including Diablo, Starcraft + Broodwar, and Warcraft 2, can't do much wrong with it either.

Westwood has released free versions of Command & Conquer 1 & 2 on their website.

Try Witcher (Enhanced Edition or just patched version), it's like best game I'v played in years, and it seems very similiar to Dragon Age.

i completed it a long time ago, when a patch was baaaadly needed :D 5minute load/save times. yeah the game was brilliant, although the voice actors/acting was a real let-down generally - DA:O seems to have very very good voice acting, judging from the E3 demonstration videos.

Bioware always has good voice acting. As well as good music :o

One thing I don't like about DA from what i'v seen on videos is engine, looks very choppy with broken animations, somehow very laggy :/

fc2 is pretty pathetic. the grass and tree branches are really edgy until you turn AA to 8x. and what system on earth is gonna run that? plus, even if you do use AA, it doesnt look much better than oblivion and oblivion easily runs 5 times as fast as fc2 without AA
