Some peeps I knew used to play some filthy Vega/Bison/Sagat/Dhalism/balrog/Chun-Li players at a high level on Super Turbo.
Seriously they got you where you wanted you could barley come out of the block animation:) Constant pressure tactics. that' why they invented Alpha blocking and stuff like parries. It was insane towards the end.

3d version dont count. noob version. I took some games off some Guy called Alex Vale in Golfland in Sunny vale in 2004 when I was in Menlo Park. He ws supposed to be one of best in CA I later heard. I think I caught him off guard I had a suit and tie on:)

His Rolento fucked me up in Alpha 2, though by that time I had not played it properly for a good year and Alpha 2 is very tick based.
If you're out of shape you can get totally overwhelmed.

With Super Turbo it's a slower pace, there was a hardcore scene in London around 94.
I mean big tourneys, all the student's from Hong Kong, Japan studying in London etc used to be there, so it was a tough place and you got to know every style.

If you ever go to London there's one one on Tottenham Court Road next to Computer Exchange. (Downstairs)

And also Las Vegas Arcade in Soho. Play2win on Oxford Street.

Like I said It's not what it was in 90's though so I prefer to remember for waht it was.
But every arcade in London sponsored a team of players from all over London arcades and it would be a big tourney. of that, killer instinct and Ridge racer.
I went on to work for the KI devs and I had to stop then.

heh .. unfortunately i've never really played SF at the arcades. i know it's supposed to be the "purest" form of SF but we didn't really have arcades in India so i had to stick to consoles.

these days i just play on MAME but an emulator is even worse than a console imo. sometimes, i'm a bit faster than it can handle and weird stuff happens like combos not chaining etc... it still is a lot of fun though. thinking of investing in an Xbox 360 so i can atleast play SF HD remix online when it comes out.

I might have to go for some of that, but again, only if netcode is good you really don't want lag and stuff messing up your timing in such a precise game.

Here's alex getting whooped in Super Turbo (ryu vs ryu), note around the 19 sec mark Daigo jumping strong, crouching medium, Ducking strong and then into a fireball, it don't get much better or more precise than that as you can see the fireball hit him because that just does not happen that much. That's one Ryu vs Ryu I don't want to play against:)

haven't tried it yet on LAN or over the internet though.
the emulator has network support, albeit experimental, but reported to work fine :)

i always hated the arcade versions of SF because you're not allowed to change character after you win in Versus mode

and there's no difference between the SEGA Dreamcast version and the arcade version (except the thing i mentioned earlier) + you can't save replays on the arcade one :)

Don't play 3s on the Dreamcast, it's not the same as 3s on cps3/xbox/ps2.

Wait for the CPS3 emulator to have all the features you need (the guy already coded that for his other emulators, so once he perfects emulation those features should come in a few days).

Meanwhile you can play Capcom vs SNK 2 or Marvel vs Capcom 2, both have nice Dreamcast ports.

hmm.. how about the arcade version of capcom vs snk 2? is that cps3 as well? i'd prefer playing any of the games on an arcade emulator anyday.

eh nvm, looks like the arcade system is essentially a DC anyway.

The arcade version uses Naomi, it's similar to the Dreamcast, but with double the video and system memory. It is said the nullDC team is working on emulating it, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

Dreamcast ports of those two games are pretty nice (CvS2 for the PS2 is good too) and run ok in nullDC. Also, the current nullDC version is a bit old, so there should be a new version coming that fixes those minor problems.

alright thanks a lot... finally.. what emulator would you recommend for cps2? im currently using mame with kaillera but im not happy with it. im not sure whether i should try out kawaks or nebula. do either of those have internet play?

This is probably the best mugen pack you can find on the Internet. The guy who compiled this is french and spent quiet some time to polish his game. It is aprox.200 chars big with a main concept being SNK vs Capcom and it runs pretty well compared to the other mugen packs available on the binary universe.
There are some 800+ chars packs for example, but I wish you good luck with the awfull bugs that often occurs during matches between... lets say, Sonic vs Vegeta ^^

Assuming you are using MAME 0.64 or 0.67 I'd say you should change. MAME PPK is good, but I still think if you only want Neo Geo/CPS1/CPS2 games you shouldn't be using MAME. I mean, MAME is for strange games and so, but it performs worse than a focused emulator.

I like winkawaks for online play. It's smooth, simple and has many video blitters to choose. Not that it improves the awful Kaillera in any way, but it's pretty polished.

Never tried Nebula, but it also supports Kaillera and should be good too.

Also another suggestion: you can play Guilty Gear XX #Reload online on the PC thanks to this.

Netcode is extremely good (better than anything seen in a fighting game before, except for Poporu).

what are the differences between SF3 3rd Strike on CPS3 and Dreamcast? couldn't find any..

Differences afaik are sprite size, less animation frames, music is worse. Then come the timing differences, specially when cancelling moves into supers, and some combos that can't be performed on the DC.

Also unblockables are removed from the game.

i beg to differ:
- sprite size and animation frames seem the same
- music is worse on CPS3

the ROM for CPS3 has 63 MB compared to the 366 MB image for Dreamcast, so i'm inclined to believe that the Dreamcast version is better as of game media.

as for gameplay elements i haven't really played the game that well to notice anything obviously different. unless you have some sort of source for your statements i can't really say you're right or wrong :)

it's a tough choice between platforms:
+ easy management system for replays on Dreamcast (ingame)
- yet experimental netcode
- bigger filesize for the game (366 MB)

vs

+ not so experimental netcode in MAME
+ smaller filesize for game ROM (63 MB)
- poorly external replay support
- poorly MAME input at least for keyboard users :)

I'm really bad at this game, I just play with some friends for fun, but I can notice it, for example, when cancelling c.MK into Chun Li's SA2, because the time frame is different on the DC than on the PS2.

Anyways, I found this. They say there are even more differences.

then the rom is incorrect (there are multiple versions scattered on the net). make sure you downloaded it from the site i posted

open your rom zip file and check if the file sf33usa.bin is present. if you're missing that it wont work. i had dled another one which didn't have that and it was the same size as the one Aquashark linked me to... but the one from his link worked fine.

oh, also make sure you remove the semi colon before the rom directory path in emulator.ini


however... i must say that at the moment, using nullDC with the DC version of 3rd strike is still a better option than the cps3 emulator. the DC version has some timing issues but the cps3 emulator is still in a very early stage and you'll experience A LOT of graphical glitches. kinda annoying. on the bright side, the performance was really really good on my system for the very first version of cps3 emulation.

the menus were fucked ye, but in-game it runs very well, no major glitches i think (but i'm no SF expert)

the latest version of the emulator doesnt the problems with menus anymore.

That said I have Third Strike and nullDC but daaamn it's a b**** to get a gamepad working with it using joy2key... When you don't know the name of all buttons on the pad, or in the game, or which button does what move (and there are so many :O), it's simply hell to try to map them out in both joy2key and in the game options. Would've been great if nullDC just supported pads already x)

Or if button configs were saveable so a standard mapping could just be downloaded and tadaa :x

(Atleast Ikaruga with it's like 2 buttons was manageable... :D)

Full Sanwa and quick disconnects in case you want to mod it in the future. You don't even need a converter since PS3 uses USB.

that's my favourite controller of all time. i prefer it even to arcade sticks. i just wish these newer consoles would have controllers that feature a simple but extremely efficient layout like that one. i remember mortal kombat 3 being great with that controller. perfect for pulling off combos.

Also, anybody who likes fighting games should try GGPO. Street Fighter Alpha 2 (which I never tried before and it's AWESOME, way better than SFA3 imho) without lag. I even played people from the US with a connection quality similar to what I was getting on Kaillera against europeans. It's still an alpha version, but, aside from a few nasty bugs, it works quite well.

wow.. the people on the shoryuken forums who usually know what they're talking about have very good things to say about GGPO. i'm gonna try it out with a friend back in India.. hopefully it'll work well :D

That always happens. MAME doesn't care about performance, they just want to emulate every single bit of circuitry in a board.

There's a bunch of info and download links on this page. It's in Spanish, but I would have no problem translating it into my engrish.

Fighting games are something that should be welcomed by competitive players here, and with GGPO and the upcoming GGPOTV this can only get better.
