Sup,

I'm currently researching destinations where I would like to study next year. The two countries I am starting with are Sweden and the Netherlands.

At the moment the uni's I'm looking at are:
1) Utrecht University (Netherlands)
2) Tilburg University (Netherlands)
3) Jonkoping University (Sweden)
4) Linkoping University (Sweden)

There are others I am considering but I am still unsure if my Uni (Macquarie, Sydney) has relations with them or not (uni of Stockholm/Amsterdam etc).

The reasons I am looking at these two countries is that they are listed as two of the english speaking uni's in europe. and also because I really want to visit them :)

What I am wondering is anyone here currently enrolled at any of these uni's or lives in/near them? Just want some general info about the lifestyle etc :)

if expenses are your main concern you should definately go for the netherlands. However, if you want to finish a lot of clases in 6 month go to Sweden (at least that's the rule of thump in Germany)

But if you want to go partying alll te time both countries have their advantages, ;)

I thought prices in Sweden were high, but I couldn't even find a place to have lunch for less than 10 euros here.

And you still get the high salaries, I'm going to illegally inmigrate there.

well, uh, no, not really. euro is currently at 6-8kr/eur somewhere and you have to pay 50-70 SEK for lunch depending on where you go. so its a bit more than 5 euro :)

I've studied at Utrecht University. It's quite a nice city and a good university. When you decide to go there, make sure you allready know where to stay. It's quite hard to find a roof over your head :p Wouldn't be surprised if it's easier for you tho, because they're really open to foreign students.
Tilburg is ok too (the city, dunno about the uni), but Utrecht is a better location. Bigger and right in the middle of NL.
What do you plan to study btw? :) And for how long, one year?

And make sure you buy a bike (you point, they steal :p) for a few euros.

I won't go into detail about the kind people that do that shit....
It does happen at certain places at certain times, but fortunately a lot of people are decent enough not to use their 'service'. A lot of bikes are being stolen though and second hand bikes are not that expensive, so there's quite a 'trade' going on :p

Landing in Joburg, first week we're going to Blyde River Canyon and Kruger. The second week we'll be visiting my uncle in Queenstown and the last two weeks we're traveling down the eastcoast to Cape Town and fly back from there.
Suggestions are welcome! :p We plan on renting a car for four weeks btw and probably will be sleeping in B&B or affordable hotels. Last holiday before I start working for good, so I have to make it count! :D

Sounds like a awesome trip, I have never been to the canyon but from pictures that ive seen it looks amazing. The Kruger is an experience no one can afford to miss.
Just a tip, when hiring a car with intentions to go to the kruger i recommend one where you can sit as high as possible, because small bushes next to the road can sometimes block your view.

Its probably a fair expectation, however we are a very diverse country and at our university lectures are 50/50 English and Afrikaans, the later mostly spoken by whites and coloureds, while other universities cater for people who speak other languages(we have 11 languages) such as Xhosa, Zulu etc that is mostly spoken by black South Africans.

nope, we have 11 official languages and 8 unofficial. iirc, Zulu, Xhosa and Afrikaans is most widely spoken while Afrikaans understood the most. However English is also widely spoken and understood, but under black South African's it can be their 3rd or 4th language.

To be honest, I would much rather live in the Netherlands and attend a University there than in Sweden. I've been looking at UVA too and it looks really nice. The lifestyle in NL is different to that in Sweden and there is a shitload more to do in NL. Dutch people have a totally different mentailty than Swedish people. Alcohol is far cheaper in NL and so is food but the living expenses are a little higher.

For the University of Stockholm I think that unless your current university has some kind of exchange program with them you will have to take a Swedish test to get in, which means you'll have to be able to speeak Swedish, unless you're doing a masters degree.

ok first of all i agree that the netherlands has a different attitude and way of life. but i won't say it's in a good way, it's more the way around. i know about .. uhh.. alot of dutch people and i can honestly say i like maybe one or two of them. the rest is pile of shits. i travelled through the country like 5-6 years ago and it was the most messy place ive ever been to and people were yelling everywhere. it's a very hostile enviroment compared to here :). so if he actually wanna learn something i wouldn't recommend nl. you seem to talk about booze and stuff but why would you study if you just wanna drink and party?

I live in utrecht my whole life and I must say.. GREAT place!! For students damn one of the best cities..

my opninion might be not too objective but seriously utrecht is much better than tilburgfor students.. everybody would tell ya that!! :)

unis cant charge more than �3070 per year for an undergrad degree but can charge less if they want

ah well didn't know for sure, from just discussing from a freind at work, she pays for her daughter and when I was talking about my fees she mentioned a lot of it had changed and was sure they could charge what they liked along with goverment grants being different now or something?

it's changed a lot over the last few years, so most people bar incoming home students are pretty clueless thus it's best to avoid third party advice on such issues.

it was based on your parents income, and they had to pay the full price, wasn't eligiable for grants.

grants are just given to help with living expenses (and is based on income)

a student loan is given to all and covers the exact amount the course costs. its then paid back weekly when youre on 15k+ a year with 0% interest. student loan isnt based on income

if i went to uni upon leave college I wouldn't have to had paid for anything, it would have all been free due to my parents income (lower than x amount)

however her parents earned more than x amount thus they/she whatever have to pay the full course amount, which was a far bit since she did a fancy dancy law/crimonolgy thing

as far as I can tell this is now different and depending on the course (courses like: teaching/egineering/language studies can be free/recieve free money for doing them) you are only eligable for so much off regardless of income (I am entitled to a maxium of �700 reduction) etc..
