Well here in France the best you can get is Free "dégroupé", don't know how to translate that, basically we have a national historical operator in France (called France Telecom), and for a few years other operators like Free have been able to install their own equipments so we don't have to pay a fee to France Telecom anymore, or go through their network. Well, that's a rough description and partially incorrect, but that's kind of the big picture.

With Free "dégroupé", for 30€/month, you get aDSL2+ (up to 24 Mb/1.2 Mb), free local and national phone calls, very low rates towards mobiles and foreign countries, High Definition TV and a load of free channels, plus others you can pay a supplementary fee for (most like cable or satellite TV), unlimited traffic, access to all newsgroups including alt.binaries.etc with a one week retention, free fastpath, and some other useful options like static ip, personalized reverse DNS, and so on.
You can also create an unlimited number of e-mail adresses, and get a 10 GB web space.
Currently they are introducing Optic Fiber in the biggest cities, basically the same offer but with a symetrical 50 Mb bandwidth.

This is only available in big towns though (most 20-30k+ inhabitants towns have that I think), elsewhere we have to deal with France Telecom, either through their own ISP (Orange, formerly Wanadoo), or through other ISPs, like Free.
I live in a 6k inhabitants town and here we have access to aDSL2+ if we use Orange (from 35 to 45€/month depending on how long you get engaged with them) or a couple other ISPs.
I use Free (30€/month) so I "only" have access to 8 Mb/1Mb aDSL, no fastpath (France Telecom tried to charge 25€ for the "installation" of fastpath plus 1.5€/month so most ISPs refused to provide it), newsgroups are limited to 400 kbps (which is way slower than what I get on torrents or even eMule), no TV, but I have access to all phone services, static ip, personalized reverse DNS, e-mails, web space and such services.

There's a whole lot of other different offers but that's pretty much the best you can get as soon as you have access to DSL somewhere in France.

Yeah, we are pretty lucky right now - wasn't that way a few years earlier, we were way behind most other big countries. Alternative providers, especially Free but not only them, have done a lot for an impressive improvement of our connections lately, together with a nice drop of monthly fees.

Well I don't know about FT outside France (I know they provide Orange in other countries) but in France it's far from beeing the best. Firstly it's not the cheapest, secondly they provide a poor set of services, especially for geeks/gamers. 2-days retention newsgroups with limited access (not all newsgroups are available), no fastpath above 1024/128 bandwidth, and they charge pretty much all services Free provide... for free (TV, phone, etc).

most crappy 100Mbps connections (even fast ethernet LAN) usually see 7-8MB/s. if we're talking over the internet, it's usually less (2-3MB/s).

the best 100 Mbps FE/SX tops out at around 11.5MB/s or so in actual practice.
I kind of doubt you get that regularly.

well, I dl at about 9MB per second, and 1.2MB upload at the same time, and you don't know anything, nublarski.

the 95mbit was in actual practice btw. It's 100 on paper.

meant to say bellsouth.net was 1.5Mbps. they also give you a "static IP" free with the most expensive service, and they used to let you buy up to five, but I'm not sure they do that now. there are other services in the area, but I haven't looked into them.

cause I've heard of far too many people who get crapper pings with 8mb on, something to do with interleaving

i am one of those people, i upgraded to 8mb and now am getting pings of 75-90 with intermittant drops. i phoned up my ISP (demon) and got them to turn interleaving off, but it has made no difference. do you have any idea what it can be?

no idea, I'm new to ADSL, is something I've never bothered to learn much about, is there any way you can personally check interleaving is off (no idea if it's shown in router info?)... otherwise I'd probably just go back to 2mb

that's because the western world has governments that matter. it's unfortunate that more socialist governments only exist in countries that aren't ecnomically significant, but that's part of politics.

if a country doesn't matter to the outside world, they have to try to advance their technology. if a country is already on top of the world (USA), they can restrict it however the hell they want while still raking in billions of dollars.

the US could easily implement 1Gbps to the home right now if they wanted, but that won't happen for another 10 years because of politics.

the infrastracture here is clearly the best in the world, despite all the wannabe-network admins claiming how bad it is.

the facts are that companies like AT&T (which has just recently swallowed up every telecom conceivable), comcast, and all of the other big players in US "consumer" "broadband" offer crappy, minimalist services because that's what gets them payed, and no one is smart enough or cares enough to complain.

hell, if you actually think we can't supply better connections than crappy 100Mbps Swedish whatever, then why do you think we don't get fucking health care or GSM phones or whatever the shit else is topic of the day?

i must be having the suckiest ISP of all sucky ISPs in the world. i've connected to the best ISP around (eastern Ukraine) and it gives me 256kbit down / 64 up for 20$ (unlimited). ping in all directions = ~100 and more and 75 to ESR. lol... btw i've connected this only yesterday and the only good thing about it is it's better than what i had before.

oh and i'd rather live in France than in Sweden. tho Sweden > Ukraine =)

wow, must be true... usual price for 2 gb per month at good speed (2mbit-8mbit depending on provider) is less than 20$. i' ve heared in Russia there's some Stream or something... in western Ukraine there is local Stream department and the speed is a bit better than i have for same price. is it just a myth?

Stream is popular in western regions of Russia.
In eastern regions we have nothing similar =(
