You know as well as I do that he never got a fair shot at real madrid. Being a benchwarmer isnt going to get any strikers scoting average up.
So, with the exception of being a benchwarmer in madrid the (besides, he had the season's highest ratio of goals scored to number of minutes played), he's scored pretty continously since 1998. He's actually had over 50% scoring average per game just about every season. Even though he's had some injuries. Even being premier leagues top scorer in 99 (and 98 of course) and winning the european footballer of the year award in 2001.
Since then if you look at the stats, he hasnt be been crap at all, he's been scoring rather continously, keeping close to (or above) 0.5 goals per game average. And really, if you look at the national team he's fourth in the list of all-time top scorers for the English team. And he's still only 27, he can get up the list a little bit if he keeps being a part of it.
